Market bag design competition,
created by students from
We Maida difference
Maida Hill Market marks a
new era for local residents and
celebrates the fruition of many
years of discussion about how to
best use the space at the junction of
Harrow Road and Elgin Avenue.
Gleaming new granite steps have
replaced the tired old tarmac. Trees
have been planted to provide shade
and lend a pastoral edge. New
lighting will brighten up the area and
give it a more welcoming feel.
The market idea was proposed by
local residents who insisted that
changing the face of the junction and
the purposes for which it was being
used was the most important priority
for the area. Many pass through it
every day, yet until now, the majority
never stopped there.
This redefined space gives a reason
to linger, to stop and have a chat with
our neighbours. The response from
local people has been tremendous
and traders from all over London
have shown interest in the market.
From 11 th June, the market will trade
on Thursdays and Fridays, 12-8pm
and all day Saturday. The piazza will
also be used for creative and artistic
events. As the nearby memorial
stone in memory of legendary local
Clash rocker Joe Strummer reminds
us, ‘The future is unwritten.’
I volunteer for the Healthy Futures
project, giving out leaflets and
offering health and diet advice.
Healthy Futures helped me train as a
Health Champion. This means I have
enough knowledge to warn people
about health problems like diabetes
and high cholesterol. I encourage
them to follow their doctor’s advice
to change their diet and lifestyle to
manage these problems.
I live locally and I’m very pleased
that the new Maida Hill Market
at the Prince of Wales Junction is
opening. It will give us a good place
to buy cheap, healthy food locally.
Through Cook & Eat sessions,
I’ve learned some simple tips on
cooking healthily, like buying a
good quality saucepan to use less
oil when I cook.
I’m good
at this role
because I
can speak to
many people
in their own
language and
relate to their
experiences.
Many people don’t know enough
English to read advice leaflets, but
I can tell them the information and
make sure that they know how to
live happy lives. It makes me happy
to know that I can make a difference.
There’s history in the air...
The pace of life can be fast and
change rapidly. This can leave us
feeling a bit rootless, with no sense
of how we came to be here – or
what was here before us.
That means it is especially important
to take an active part in collecting,
remembering, preserving and
recording the present so that our
impact is felt long into the future.
Local resident Murray Clarke is
doing just that. He is creating an
audio resource that will be available
in the autumn to local residents and
schools interested in learning about
the history of the Harrow Road from
1400 to the present.
If you are feeling the historical buzz,
you can get in touch with Murray
through the Neighbourhood Centre
to share your interesting information,
memories and stories about the
Harrow Road over the past century.
Similarly, a group of veteran local
campaigners have formed the North
Paddington History Group (NPHG)
to organise public events and talks on
the subject of local history over the
last century.
You can contact the NPHG online
or look out for the launch event at
London Print Studio in June.
Taking us up to the present day,
London Print Studio is running
an ongoing project, encouraging
visitors to participate in creating
a photographic record of Harrow
Road as it is today. You can drop
in anytime before 20 th June to view
the exhibition.
as recording and TV studios and
a studio theatre to support the
academy’s media and performing
arts specialism.
Commenting on the opening of
the new building, Oli Tomlinson
said, ‘It was an honour to have
this special occasion marked by
PDT looks to
the future
Over 100 local residents,
community leaders and others
attended the Paddington
Development Trust’s 10 th
anniversary conference on 14 th
May at Westminster Academy.
The message from keynote
speaker Stephen Thake, a
university lecturer and urban
development specialist, was that
Paddington is at the forefront of
massive social change in Britain
and that this change will shift
the balance of power between
people and government.
Thake urges investment in the
civil sector on the scale of that
devoted to the public sector
over the past 30 years.
In a second keynote speech,
Karen Buck, MP credited PDT
with laying ‘the foundations for a
vastly strengthened and enhanced
civil society in Paddington.’
Buck added, ‘I am more proud
of what PDT and its friends
and partners and colleagues
have achieved than anything
else that has happened in the
12 years since I have been a
member of parliament.’
Working groups discuss
the way forward.
The conference then broke into
working groups, which came
up with recommendations
to guide PDT’s programmes
over the next 10 years. A full
conference report will soon be
available from PDT offices.
opportunities, benefits or debt.
Westminster Works...
We all know these are hard times
for job seekers. But the workers
at a new, and very different,
local employment project are
confident they can find you a
good job if you really want one.
Westminster Works is a big employment
programme just for local people. A team
of thirteen, highly trained, personal
advisers will work with over 3000
residents over the next two years to get
them into jobs and training.
Westminster
Works for Jobs
What makes this programme
different?
The thing that distinguishes this
employment programme is that the
advisers have much more time to
work with individuals. They can
really listen to what you want to do
and work with you over time to reach
your goals. They also know about
local jobs and what local employers
are looking for. One of the partner
organisations in the programme
has already helped 5,500 local
people find jobs. Some got work
quickly, others met with their adviser
regularly for up to a year to develop
confidence and new work skills.
How does it work?
When you join the programme
you will meet your own personal
adviser who will remain your
special link person for as long as
you remain on the programme.
If you need training, your adviser
will help find a work placement or
the right place for you to study.
James, Westminster
Works for Jobs
Adviser, is based at
the Church Street
Neighbourhood
Centre.
If you are ready to go to work
straight away, they will look for
suitable vacancies and help with
tips for your application form and
practice for the interview.
Will this affect benefits?
No. All the advice is free and extra
help with childcare and travel costs
may be arranged. Whatever stands
between you and the job you want,
your adviser will try to find ways of
removing the barriers.
...for you
How long is the programme?
That is up to you. Some people may
find a job straight away. Others may
need a longer training course or a
work placement. Some people don’t
feel very confident about going to
work or they don’t know what kinds
of jobs would suit them. The adviser
can help you identify the skills you
already have and match that to what
local employers are looking for.
What if there aren’t any jobs out there?
It is true that times are difficult but
there ARE jobs if you know where to
look and can convince an employer
that you are the right person. Our
team of personal advisers has been
hand-picked because of their success
in getting people into work and into
training that leads to work.
Are these just dead end jobs?
No. The adviser can help you plan
a career and will stay in touch for
at least six months after you have
started work so they can discuss how
you can progress in your chosen
field. They can also help persuade
your employer to let you carry
on with free training so that your
prospects keep improving.
I can’t work full time. Can I still join?
Yes. Some of the advisers specialise
in finding jobs for people like
mothers with young children who
can only work part time.
Never too late to get
active in Westminster
Nearly 100 older people visited
part of Active Westminster, the
City’s initiative to promote healthy
and sociable lifestyles in later life.
Another aim of the initiative is to
improve the lives of people who live,
work and study in Westminster.
The event offered taster sessions and
information about the large range of
dance and exercise classes available.
Also, residents could stop at the
numerous information stalls to
learn more about the wide range of
local services.
‘You can also learn how to
‘Most importantly, it’s a great
way to have fun, meet others with
similar interests, and keep up-todate
Don’t miss your chance
to play the Street Piano
at Maida Hill Market
from 23 rd June.
‘If music be the food of
love, play on...’
We’re used to having piped elevator
musak, the radio or music TV forced
upon us when we’re shopping, but
beginning in June, you can control
the music you hear…by performing
it yourself on the Street Piano.
For three weeks beginning on 23 rd
June, the newly revamped Prince of
Wales Junction will host the Street
Piano. The piano, decorated by a
local group and painted with the
words ‘Play me, I’m yours,’ will
come with a songbook and music to
encourage every budding musician to
have a go at making music in public,
and the tuneful (and tone deaf!) to
sing along. Sing London will also
hold some structured group sing-alongs
during nice weather.
Although the Street Piano will be
secured to railings, it’s entirely
free to play and listen. It’s up to
you whether you want to use it to
compose an opus, practice your
scales or just listen to the tinkling
as you shop at Maida Hill Market.
This is a really fun opportunity to
make some noise together!
What’s on this summer?
Exciting plans are afoot for young
people in Harrow Road this
summer with loads of activities
taking place just around the corner.
Harrow Road Neighbourhood
Partnership (HRNP), in association
with Walterton & Elgin Community
Homes, London Tigers and Future
Champions, is planning a variety of
activities ranging from crafts to DJing
for everyone under 18 years old.
One of last year’s DJ workshop
participants says, ‘I had been getting
involved with the wrong crowd, but
the summer programme kept me busy.’
This summer’s programme will have
even more activities to choose from,
including fashion, cooking and drama.
Local residents can also find out about
holiday youth provision for the under
19s across the borough in the Council’s
redesigned booklet of youth provision.
It’s my
business
Dekkers and Darling
This internet-based business,
selling garden furniture and
accessories, was founded by
Lizzie Dekkers and Nicola
Darling four years ago. They
have recently brought on a
third partner, April Frost.
‘Much of our furniture is made
from teak, and as far as possible,
this comes from managed and
sustainable forests or from
fittings from decommissioned
buildings in India,’ says Lizzie.
‘Nicola and I met at a wedding
and decided that we wanted to
start a business we could run
from our homes. We wanted to
build the business around our
lives rather than vice versa.
‘Running a web-based business
gives us lots of flexibility and
frees us from having to run a shop
with all the extra overheads. This
is very much a seasonal business,
starting from Easter and running
through to September each year.
‘We also have our Little Darlings
section with toys and furniture
for children and April will be
working on expanding that.
‘I love being based in this area
– I live just off Elgin Avenue,
near Harrow Road. There’s a real
community feeling here. People
actually know their neighbours.’
Calling all men...
...Healthy Futures wants you!
To support National Men’s Health
Week (15 th -21 st June), Healthy
Futures will spend the entire month
promoting the health needs of men.
The main objective is to improve
men’s awareness of the range of
health related services available not
only here in Harrow Road, but across
Westminster.
Thirzah, the local Healthy Futures
Nurse, will focus on a different
health issue each week in June.
The four issues are:
•Smoking cessation
•Promoting physical activity
•Promoting good mental health
•Diet & weight management
Give your time
Volunteering can provide skills
and experiences you wouldn’t get
otherwise.
It can help you make personal
friends and business contacts, and
also improve your confidence and
knowledge of your rights.
This summer, HRNP will be working
to promote the benefits of volunteering
in the local community by encouraging
residents to register with the Volunteer
Centre and search for opportunities
online at the Neighbourhood Centre.
Thirzah, the
Healthy Futures
Nurse in Harrow
Road, is working
to raise awareness
about men’s health.
Thirzah can assess your individual
needs and create a plan to help you
in any of the areas mentioned above.
To book a personalised Health Check, call
07785 324 469. Also, look out for flyers
promoting men’s health events this month.
HRNP is also working with local
housing associations to explore the
idea of a ‘Timebank’.
A Timebank would allow volunteers to
gain credits for each hour spent helping
other people or local organisations,
and encourage them to ‘spend’ those
credits getting help and support for
themselves. HRNP is gauging interest
for the project to possibly launch a
Timebank in the autumn.
If you’d like to find out more or to register
your interest, call Kierra on 020 8968 5543.
