Page 2 of 30/Director’s Report
We are grateful to Dr. Ganguly for inaugurating this campus earlier this
evening before this convocation ceremony which is the very first at this
campus. The Plaque at front of our admin office will be a constant reminder to
everyone at this institute of the very special connection that Dr. Ganguly will
always have to GIM. The Banyan tree planted by him will grow and will
represent the future growth of this institute at this campus.
Dr. Ganguly is not a newcomer to the Goa Institute of Management. In the past
he has visited our Ribandar campus and we have invited him to give the
keynote address for our symposium on the FMCG business. We recollect how,
at that time, he electrified the audience with his speech and provided a great
impetus to the Symposium.
Dr. Ganguly is known to be thinker and a motivational speaker par excellence
and although he tells me that with time he has lost some of that fire, I am quite
confident that our graduating students and our faculty would surely benefit
from the very sound advice he will give us as they graduate and launch their
careers from this institution that has surely added something new to their
outlook and to their capability.
Most of us have borne the pangs of the birth of this new campus and when our
chairman visited us once he had suggested we present each one from this
batch with a T-shirt which confirmed that you were pioneers of the Sanquelim
green campus. More recently we have installed a plaque that has your names
inscribed in stainless steel to commemorate for posterity your stay here.
Besides that plaque is one to remember the faculty and staff who bore the
brunt of the move from Ribandar to Sanquelim. There is also the project
control teams who have tried to do this best always, whom we specially must
mention today.
Page 3 of 30/Director’s Report
Let me now present to you the director’s Report for the year. Since the report
gets longer as the activities of the institute grow I shall read only the highlights
and you can read the details in the full report which is available.
Before I do that I must give you the good news that as of now we have the AIU
clearance for equivalence of your PGDM with and that entitle you to do your
PhD.
1. NEW CAMPUS AT PORIEM IN SATTARI TALUKA.
The new campus is now complete and the project accounts are expected to
be closed very soon. Although the environment and the architecture are
most convenient for management education it is important that all of us,
and the batches who follow, make special efforts to ensure that it is well
looked after and improved further as there is most definitely scope for
further improvement.
The infrastructure of the campus is second to none in our country and we
shall all look forward to its successful utilization to heighten our
capabilities. We hope to improve our overseas collaboration, so as to
upgrade this potential and to participate in an ambitions programme for
the student’s individual growth, the growth of their capabilities and their
contribution towards the growth of GIM.
We must report that this project was largely completed within a
satisfactory time line of approx a year, though the tying up of a few loose
ends took a bit longer. The cost of the project was Rs.63 crores – 5%
higher than our original budget which is justified as the scope included
some items not originally envisaged. Out of the Rs.63 crores Rs.43 crores
was sourced through a term loan from the Bank of India, and we expect to
reach up to Rs.10 crores in donations. The remainder Rs.10 crores were
realized through internal funding of which Rs.3.6 crores was the original
corpus found.
Page 4 of 30/Director’s Report
For the expeditious completion of the project we need to acknowledge the
support of most members of the Board who have lent their support by way
of donations, their valuable time and their guidance. The later part of the
project is usually critical, when all the loose ends have to be tied. For this
activity we owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Pratapsingh Raoji Rane and Mr.
Raman Madhok who reviewed the project every Tuesday at site and
supported us with ideas and with pressure to maintain our time and cost
schedules. The Campus Development Committee with Mr. Shrinivas
Dempo, Mr. Dean Menezes, Mr. Raman Madhok and Ms. Swati Salgaocar
were always a support we could fall back on.
The architects Ms Somaya & Kallapa regularly visited the site and put up
the impressive architecture. M/s Vascon Engineers were our main
contractors in charge of all civil works and of some interiors. M/s Sterling
& Wilson and later R.K. Electricals executed the electricals and Ms
Vigneshwar and M/s Shree Manguirish, both franchisees of Blue Start
have done the HVAC. Most of the furniture has been done by Infiniti from
Pilerne.
We must acknowledge the support of the local Panchayat, the Town and
Country Planning Dept, and the Electricity and PWD and all the
government departments who willingly helped us ensure that the project
was not held up due to lack of approvals. We greatly appreciate the
support we received from the Government of Goa and the Education Dept
who have always been supportive of GIM and our activities.
2. FACULTY –
We have been increasing in our efforts to secure good faculty. Although we
have increased our numbers and our quality we shall continue to put in
all efforts to start the new academic Year 2012-13 with strength of at least
Page 5 of 30/Director’s Report
42 full time faculty, and shall not cease our efforts till we reach strength of
50 competent full time faculty.
As we increase the strength of our full time faculty, we need to reduce
visiting faculty and restrict their numbers to areas where we do not have
In house expertise.
We also propose, in line with AICTE recommendation, to reduce the
number of contact hours in class so as to allow our students more time for
the preparation for the class based on the course outline and on the case
studies given so as to encourage independent individual study such that
in the class the faculty can stimulate and facilitate good discussion and
exchange of views in a learning experience, in line with our philosophy.
I am glad to announce the appointment of Prof. N. Sambandam as the new
Academic Dean of GIM and am confident that he will lead GIM to greater
academic heights.
Our faculty are the back bone of our institute and we look up to them to
set a good example in discipline, in diligence and innovative initiatives. We
must strive together to take GIM to even greater heights.
At our Annual Retreat on April 11 th and 12 th we hope to summarize the
changes propose in the curriculum for the next academic year. These will
no doubt follow from our approved philosophy and from our perspective
plan as also from some of the more recent AICTE recommendation.
Page 6 of 30/Director’s Report

3 MODIFICATIONS TO OUR CURRICULUM
3.1 GIVE GOA – A CSR PROJECT
The GIVE GOA project which is a compulsory 4 credit course in our first
year course in which the 40 groups of 6 students each choose 40 NGO’s to
work with during the year, this which includes some classroom work and
20 Thursdays on the field. Under the broad guidance of the faculty
member and the GIVE GOA co-coordination team. This experiment, that
we have tried for the first time, has yielded excellent results in most cases.
Besides the student team making different types of contribution to the
NGO’s projects most of them were able to experience a valid experience in
learning of Social values and some of them have developed an emotional
bond with the people they worked with. We believe that they will continue
to maintain this bond and will guide their juniors in progressing the
success of this project next year as the new team of first year students
take up their social projects.
3.2 Reduced contact hours in class
As mentioned earlier it is proposed to allow students more time for the
preparation for their class and for analysis of their case studies.
This is in line with the recommendations of an AICTE committee which is
chaired by our Dean Prof. Sambandam
Page 8 of 30/Director’s Report
3.3 ACCENT ON INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY
Last year we introduced a 2 day workshop run by Ivan Arthur, former
creative Director of the Walter Thompon and this produced good results
in kindling out of the box thoughts for managerial creativity.
We now have a course on Creativity and Innovation by Cedric Serpes and
this has encouraged a trend on creativity at GIM.
3.4 PROJECT ON REVIVAL OF SICK UNITS
GIM has undertaken to work with the Govt. of Goa to revive some sick
units in Goa. This is being due under the guidance of Prof. Debabrata
Sen and with the support of his students. As we have made a good start
the Govt. now proposes to take up 2 more sick units and GIM has agreed
to support this effort.
This exercise is being done as part of our course on entrepreneurship; A
step further in this direction will be an Incubation cell to be made
available to our graduation and to other entrepreneurs in Goa.
3.5 GIM choir – the GIM choir which was started last year by Prof. Chirsto
Fernandes has performed creditably. They were awarded a Distinction
with – 96% in the level 3 choir exam conducted by an examiner who came
from the Thames Valley University, London U K Mr. David Whitaker
The activities of the Choir are an important addition to our curriculum
though not part of our syllabus. Besides adding good music to our
environment here it is also an excellent training in team work.
Next year we hope to intensify this activity with greater active participation
of the students.
Page 9 of 30/Director’s Report
3.5 THIRD LANGUAGE CLASSES
The third language classes are a great support in the making of a global
manager and are a must for some of our exchange programmes. They
also open larger national and international avenues for placement and
career development.
At some European institutes they are a prerequisite for grant of the MBA
degree.
We have made a good start here with competent teachers in German,
French, Spanish and Portuguese and hope to add Italian next year
6 STUDENT EXTRACURRICULAR ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE YEAR
The Last year has seen a very substantial range in extracurricular
student activities during the year. I suppose this could be attributed to
- The large batch size and the larger size of student population at this
campus.
- The additional facilities provided at this campus that encouraged
students to attempt various competitions.
- Lesser distraction here than at Ribandar Campus.
Whatever the reason we are pleased to report the large amount of
extracurricular activities and prizes won are under.
7 ADMISSIONS FOR THE YEAR 2012-14
While the rest of the Country saw a significant down turn in PGDM
applicants.
– Between 10 and 30% - We are glad to report that at GIM we saw an
improvement of 23% in our applications through XAT format. Although a
little late, we accepted the CMAT format also but were compelled to close
on 6th Jan, 2012 and we would have inadequate time to complete our
admission procedure.
We continue to try to maintain a best a diversity of disciplines as we can
for our admissions. Some of the IIM’s have reported that they have, this
year introduced a preference for diversity in graduating discipline and in
an attempt to achieve a better gender parity.
We feel proud that we took steps four years ago to improve our diversity.
As regards achieving a better gender balance GIM has traditionally been
preferred by young women who have for some time constituted 32 to 38%
of our intake.
We hope that with our all round activities we will attract a larger
component of applicant who will go into making better well rounded
managers.
8 APPROVAL OF FEE REVISION BY THE STATE FEE FIXATION
COMMITTEE:
The State Committee approved the fee hike for the next years from our
current Rs. 5.5 lakhs for the two year course to Rs. 9 lakhs for a
corresponding period in 2012-14. At this level of fee rise are marginally
lower than institutes of similar ranking, which fact is borne by the
increase in our applications after announcing the new fee structure.
Page 27 of 30/Director’s Report
9 PLACEMENTS
We can report a satisfactory placement performance. The number of
students placed so far is 207 and the remainders 13 are likely to be placed
very soon. The average salary is Rs. 7.79 & the median salary is 8 lakhs
which is marginally lower than last year, which is keeping with the general
trend in the Country. The highest is Rs. 13.07.
10 MDP’s
During the year we have executed a larger number of MDP’s than our
usual somewhat unsatisfactory record. However we have rejigged our
approach to MDP’s. We shall publish our MDP Calendar so as to achieve a
substantially better result for the next year.
11 EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES
Our exchange programmes continue with a larger strength but to the same
institutes in Europe.
This year we hope to host a batch of undergraduate students from William
& Mary School and hope that this collaboration can eventually be
upgraded to a higher level of collaboration of student and faculty exchange
at the MBA level.
We continue to pursue our efforts to seek fresh avenues for exchange
programmes.
12 CRISIL RATING
I am glad to report that in their rating exercise CRISIL have rated us A**
the second level at the National Level and A*** the highest level at the state
level. We believe that it will not be too long before we are able to be rated
with A*** at the National level as well.
13 ACCOUNT OF GIM
The Accounts for this year will be ready after the end of the financial year
ending 31 st March, 2012.
However, the accounts of the last year showed a deficit of Rs. 498.64 lakhs
for the year and this is expected to reduce marginally to Rs. 486.40 lakhs
for this year end. This is due to a large depreciation charge and we do not
have any cash loss to report. We expect to start paying back our loan from
this year but end 2012-13 with a small cash surplus.
academic level. I shall offer all help in a smooth transition, for an even
better performance of GIM next year and in the years to follow.
