LaMI is an engineering sciences research laboratory;
- organized into three mechanical engineering
Research and Applications Teams;
- mechanical engineering partner of automatic and information
systems
laboratories in the Research Group:
TIMS - Technologies of Information, Mobility and Safety.
Research in engineering sciences
In engineering sciences, as in any other science, the researcher is not
only an observer but also a creator and inventor. For the aim of
engineering is to take part in the creation of objects and systems and in
the analysis of their operation. Objects and systems have complex
structures integrating very varied contents. Such research cannot be
reduced to a simple application of one discipline or profession, but
possesses its own methodological and scientific content. It cannot be
limited to the implementation of a particular engineering science, but
comprises research in the whole field of engineering. In LaMI, this
research is articulated around three topics whose development is linked to
academic and industrial partnerships, in particular within the framework of
the TIMS Research Group.
Probabilistic Structural Mechanics
Adding a mechanical dimension to a long
tradition of probability theory studies in
the Auvergne region of France, the
Probabilistic Structural Mechanics
research team invented the mechanicsreliability
pairing through the twin
competences of static and dynamic
behaviour modelling, and stochastic
modeling, making it today one of the
rare teams in the world capable of
mastering the introduction of uncertainty
to mechanically oriented industrial
problems. The team brings original
answers to the analysis of mechanical
systems robustness (reliability, integrity,
safety, robust optimization) and to
random dynamics (identification of
stochastic dynamic systems and methods
for solving nonlinear stochastic dynamics
methods).
MPS
Pipe lifespan forecasting
Dynamic behaviour
in a random context
Mechanics & Materials
Deformation field measurement
M&M
Taking advantage of the proximity which
characterizes medium-sized sites, the
Mechanics and Materials research team
develops cross-fertilization of modelling and
experimentation approaches relating to
various types of inert or viable materials
with strongly hierarchical structures.
Composite modelling
The team's scientific objectives are to
ensure the durability of mechanical or
biological structures through design,
reinforcement, maintenance or repair, and
to improve the mechanical quality of
products of vegetable or animal origin.
co-ordinator: Alexis BEAKOU (Alexis.Beakou@ifma.fr)
Machines, Mechanisms and Systems
MMS
Adding research in structural synthesis to its expertise in the real
behaviour of mechanisms, robots and machines, the Machines,
Mechanisms and Systems research team constitutes a focal point for
the integration of work on effort and movement transmission:
- Formalization of invention approaches and structural synthesis, leading
to the creation of engineering objects,
- Static and dynamic modeling and identification of real behaviour
parameters,
- Optimization of machining trajectories and strategies.
Choice of optimal
machining strategies
Vehicle suspension design
Innovation in robotics
Academic research staff
On October 1, 2004, LaMI included 28 Professors and Associate Professors,
academic research staff from Blaise Pascal University (Sciences department,
CUST - Institute for Engineer Sciences, Institute of Technology) and the
French Institute for Advanced Mechanics (Products and Structures and
Machines, Mechanisms and Systems departments).
PhD students
LaMI is the support laboratory for the Solid Mechanics Research Master, and
receives students from the Engineering Sciences Doctoral School. On
October 1, 2004, there were 34 PhD students financed by research grants,
industrial partnerships, and co-supervision with foreign universities.
Master's co-ordinator: Jean-François DESTREBECQ
(Jean-Francois.Destrebecq@univ-bpclermont.fr)
Scientific partnerships
LaMI collaborates with French research organizations (CNRS, DGA, ECA,
INRS, LCPC) within the framework of French or European research
programs, and with foreign universities for doctorates in co-supervision.
Industrial partnerships
LaMI manages important industrial partnerships through two outline
agreements (Michelin Tyres, Electricity of France) and multiple industrial
conventions (ARCELOR, GIAT, PHIMECA, NCV, PSA, Renault, SFU, for
example).
