President
Report
by
Sue Borden
The trip to Greenville,
Ohio for our National
New Zealand show this year
was bittersweet.
Our rabbit family has lost
another important part of our history with the
passing of Harry Rice. Harry lived and breathed
rabbits and supported this breed always. The
National in Greenville, Ohio this year was
dedicated to Harry and Deskie Rice and although
Harry left us right before the show we all felt he
was there with us in spirit.
I think that everyone will agree that it was a
great show. I know that Paul Grundtish and David
Mangione will especially agree that this was a
great national SHOW! I congratulate them on
BOB and BOS respectively. There was, as usual,
the quality and also the quantity of rabbits
making this the show to attend. All the winners
will be listed in full here in the newsletter and
on our website. The Ohio New Zealand club is
one of the more experienced of our clubs and
as usual they did not disappoint at this National.
Thanks to Janellen Swartz and Charlie Crabtree
and all the members of that club for a job well
done.
The Federation’s officers met Friday evening to
do the club’s business and those minutes will be
printed elsewhere for your review. The Texas New
Zealand club , represented by Mark Manglberger,
presented a very nice bid to host the 2012 New
Zealand National show in Ft. Worth. A vote was
taken and your board officially awarded the bid
to Ft. Worth for 2012. More information will be
coming in the near future.
Don’t forget that the newly formed Pennsylvania
New Zealand club will be hosting our 2011 show
in Leesport, Pa. There will be more information
on that show on both the website and the Times.
Our National shows each spring are a great place
to showcase the best of our breed. It is also a
good time to renew old friendships and make
some new ones. If you have never attended our
spring show come join us next year for a good
time.
You will notice in our minutes that we had
to call a special open membership meeting at
this National. The purpose of this meeting was
to obtain the membership vote on updating our
New Zealand Times 2
sweepstakes to include both the meat pen and
broken points. I thank the Ohio club for granting
us the time to take care of that business. Thank
you also to Tony Bell , chair of our Constitution
and By-laws committee , for getting that update
ready for us to vote on.
A few more thanks to mention…. Thanks to
Tony Fortney for putting together the highly
successful rabbit auction. Our auction wouldn’t
be successful without the quality of donated
animals and the motivated buyers that support
your club with their bidding. Thanks to Lisa
Jennings for coming up with the cute new fun
t-shirts . The profit on these shirts will benefit
the club and I’m sure if you missed getting one
from Lisa in Greenville just contact her and she
will make sure you get one or even ten. They
would be great for the whole family. Thanks
Charlie for the camera work, we appreciate
your photos and your time.
Thanks, one more time, to Dave Mangione
for all the work you did to get the Broken New
Zealand accepted. I think that most would
agree the brokens have added a new interest in
New Zealands. The Broken group’s first official
national showing was a great success. The classes
had great quality and dept.
A very special congratulations to dear friends
Janellen and Bob Swartz on receiving the AFNZRB
Outstanding Member(s) award for 2010. I think
we surprised them. Janellen has served this
Federation on many levels and committees, but
her main job has been secretary of the Ohio New
Zealand club , giving us many very successful
National New Zealand shows. Bob has served
this club as director, committee chair and vice
president. Thank you both for your hard work
and dedication to the New Zealand breed , it is
appreciated by all.
Congratulations also to Jim Bounakes from
MA. He was named to the Federation’s Hall of
Fame for 2010. Jim has served as director of the
Federation and chaired committees over the
past years.
Did you know that Jim has won over 200 BIS’s
with his New Zealands in his rabbit career?
Congratulations Jim on an honor well deserved.
I hope you all have made your plans for the
convention in Minneapolis this November. I am
planning to see you there.
Remember if you have any questions or
thoughts on how to make this club a better one
for all, just contact me .
Report
by
Dave Mangione
The votes are in
and the winners
are…………….. The results
of our National show held
in Greenville, Ohio can be
found in the edition of the Times as well as our
National New Zealand web site. Congratulations
to all the winners and a special thank you to all
the exhibitors who attended the show.
I submitted my first New Zealand Specialty
Club Report for the Domestic Rabbit magazine.
I took a different approach for our report and
went beyond summarizing major events in the
New Zealand Breed. I am and will submit some
timely tips called “Seasonal Tips for the Rabbitry
101”. Hopefully, this will add some substance to
our club report. Please send ideas, information,
club reports etc. that I can use for this report as
your input as a member of our national club is
important.
Tony Fortney is now giving leadership to the
New Zealand Auction held at our national and
convention shows. Tony did a great job organizing
this very important fund raising event for our
club in Greenville. I believe this event raised
over $1000 for our club. Special thanks also go
out to the consignors and buyers who make this
fund raiser a success. You see this is just another
example of paying forward. Our club success is
contingent upon individual members working as
a team for a common goal.
My article in this edition of the Times addresses
clean air in the rabbitry. Congratulations again to
the winners at the 2010 New Zealand Nationals
and a huge thank you to the Ohio New Zealand
Club for hosting this major event.
Report
by
John Neff
It’s sad to start another
report & have to talk
about the loss of another one
of our great members, Harry
Rice…
Harry was a long time member, past Secretary-
Treasurer, Judge and a Hall of Fame member in
both the Federation and ARBA. Harry was the
ultimate promoter of the New Zealand Rabbit.
Needless to say, we can never replace these
legends and I feel so fortunate to have know
these great men. Rest in Peace, Harry…
“Wow” another great National in Ohio. Thankyou
to all of the members who helped make this
a National to remember. Congrats to all of the
winners, you will find a complete Show Report
elsewhere in this edition & on the website.
Thank-you to Tony Fortney and generous
members who donated & purchased rabbits at
our auction. Again, there is a complete report
elsewhere in the Times.
And, a big thank-you to Lisa Jennings. Lisa had
some T-shirts made up to sell at the National.
Lisa sent me a check for $220.00 of clear profit
to the Federation..
We had a good Board Meeting. You will find the
minutes also printed in this issue.
Director Mark Manglberger presented an
outstanding bid for the 2012 New Zealand
National to be held in Ft. Worth, TX. The BOD
approved this bid, watch for more details in
future issues of the Times & on the website.
Thank-you Texas, I for one, look forward to
another National in the Lone Star State.
Next up of course will be the ARBA Convention
in MN. Please let President Borden how you may
be able to help. We can always use help in the
Booth. Just don’t stop by for a visit, stop by &
help. Don’t forget the raffle…
In talking with Rick Shipe & Bruce Himmelberger
it sounds like the PA crew is working hard on the
2011 National. It will be good to get home to PA
and of course see all of our NZ Friends.
Speaking of the Times & the website, Dick
Gehr & Norma Hart continue to do a great job. If
you see either one of them at any shows, please
let them know how much you appreciate their
efforts. I have received quite a few comments or
emails about the work that they do and I always
try to pass it along to Dick & Norma.
A “BIG” thank-you from the Federation…
Show Sanctions… We can not issue NZ Sanction
without an ARBA Sanction number. We have
received quite a few Sanction requests without
this, sorry we need the ARBA number. Also, it
is not our job to contact the ARBA Office for
this information. Please provide it when the NZ
Sanction is requested.
Well, time to bring this to a close. It was great
seeing many of you in Ohio and I look forward
to our visit in MN. Take care, and keep enjoying
this great rabbit that has brought us so many
friends….
Hi New Zealand
Breeders
My thanks to all the
people that helped make
the New Zealand Spring Nationals a big success.
I know it takes many thankless hours to set up
and take down a show room. Thanks Jane for
taking care of the secretarial work. There was
a nice turn out of New Zealands at the show.
Congratulations to the winners. This was my
first trip to Greenville. What a nice old farming
community. Denise and I had some extra time to
drive around to see the area. We were impressed
with the cleanliness of the farms. Being a farm
person it is always interesting to see other area
farms.
We have had some good showings of New
Zealands in Washington. By late June at our
state convention I am looking forward to a large
showing of all four varieties. We are starting to
see more reds and brokens being shown. I am
anxiously waiting for my young litters to grow to
see what I may have to show this fall.
See you in Minneapolis.
llo from Northern
HIllinois, H
I hope this finds everyone
well and healthy. As spring
comes to an end and summer
begins it is starting with a
heat wave for us. We have had 3 days of 90 or near
90 and humid. Can do without that this early.
I hope that everyone has all the nest boxes full.
We had good luck this round. I bred 30 does and
they all have had litters except for 1 miss and
2 lost the litter. They were all good size litter
from 3-11 moved some around to even things out.
They have been keeping me busy putting in nest
boxes.
We have to start planning for MN in November, it
should be a good show. Sue is getting her litters
for the presentation of the Blues hope it goes
better this time.
I wanted to say a few words about Harry Rice.
I didn’t know him as well as some of the other
breeders but in his hey day he had some good
rabbits and was always a good showman and
sportsman. I have seen Harry start a bid on a
rabbit on the auction just to get it started and
end up with it just to help out the club.
We bought a jr buck from him in Greenville
several years back and that was the best meat pen
producing buck I have ever had.
We picked out the buck before the show and it
ended up winning the Jr Buck class. He told Sue
that she should work on getting a judges license.
We will sure miss Harry and all his stories.
Well I better get this closed up so that Sue
can type it up and send it to Dick. Hope to see
everyone in MN.
mention goes to Paul Grundtisch and Dave
Recognition is also warranted for those who won
We really missed being at the show and seeing
Linda had knee replacement surgery on April
successful yet painful rehabilitation. The doctor
says that it will take about a year for her to get
back to normal. At some point in the future, she
will also need to have the other knee replaced.
Wanted to let all of you know that our friend
kidney problems. We pray that he has a speedy
recovery.
It has been a cold /wet year in northern
we have had more than 50 inches of rain here at
the house. It has also been unusually cold for
so late in the year. We had a good frost on May
20 th . I was finally able to plant our garden on
May 23 rd . There will be no Early Girl tomatoes by
the 4 th of July this year.
It was with great sadness that we heard of the
passing of Harry Rice. He was, without question,
the major icon of the New Zealand world, during
our time. Harry was a great storyteller. He
served as a mentor to many breeders and judges.
Probably more than any other person, Harry
played an important role in the development the
New Zealand club and the New Zealand rabbit.
He was also very influential in the ARBA.
I remember, as if it were yesterday, attending
my first ARBA convention in Tucson, AZ in 1979.
Both Harry Rice and Fibber McGeehee judged
the New Zealands. It was the experience of
a lifetime and got me hooked on going to the
convention. It represents the end of an era now
that these two prominent figures have left us.
Our rabbits have been bred for the convention.
New Zealand Times 6
With good health and weather permitting, we
hope to see many of you this fall in Minnesota.
H As I was heading
toward Ohio for the NZ
Nationals this past April it was a sad feeling
knowing that my good friend Harry Rice would
not be there with us. I always enjoyed going to
shows in Ohio in the past just to see Harry. We
traded rabbits for many years at every National.
I would get a buck from him and he would get a
doe from me. His KO strain of New Zealands were
some of the hardest feeling rabbits that I’ve ever
put my hands on. He said it was from the corn he
fed them and I can still see him throwing them
ears of corn in their cages. He was one of the
biggest promoters of rabbits especially the New
Zealand that we’ve ever had and our great club
we have today is because of Harry and people
like him. When I see a NZ rabbit I think of Harry
Rice. I miss you my friend.
What a great National we had. Over 900 rabbits
and 40 to 50 exhibitors. That Ohio bunch knows
how to put on a show. There was some really nice
broken classes for there first National showing.
The quality of all varieties was unbeleiveable.
Most classes from 10th place down could of been
picked first by the flip of a coin. The show moved
on really quick. With everybody helping out from
bringing rabbits to the judges table and taking
them back.Speaking for all the guys a BIG THANK
YOU to all the women who worked at the tables
sorting, placing and writing comments for each
rabbit. You are why the show runs so smoothly.
THANKS again I would like to congratulate all
the class winners open and youth. Hats off to
Paul & Dave BOB &BOS open and Hannah Means
BOB & BOS youth Also thanks to everybody who
donated a rabbit to the auction and everybody
who won the bid on them. It’s good for the club.
As Harry’s articles would say RAMBLING WITH
RICE I guess I’ve rambled enough myself. Hope
to see everybody real soon.
enjoyed it very much.
Brokens had a very good
Harry Rice, nice man. He
will be missed. He liked judging youth and did a
good job too,
I hope everyone has their plans made for the
fall show in Minnesota. Here we come!
Hopefully we will have some to pick from, nest
e last year has been
Tan T eye opener for all
of us. Some greats in the
rabbit world have passed
on. Among them was Harry
Rice. I wish that I had had to
opportunity to get to know him personally. Even
though I did not, his reputation preceded him.
Those who knew him spoke well of him with his
wisdom, competitive spirit, and genuine concern
for the future of the rabbit industry. We should
all take this as another lesson that reinforces
in us the need to take hold of the ones who are
experienced in our wonderful hobby and learn
from all their experiences. From that knowledge
we gain from them we should be willing to assist
others and promote the rabbit industry.
On a more cheerful note, it was great to
see all the New Zealand exhibitors at the New
Zealand Nationals in Greenville, Ohio. The show
was fantastic and the banquet was really cool;
you know what I am talking about if you were
there. Texas is proud to say that they presented
a bid at the board meeting at nationals for the
2012 New Zealand National Show. The bid was
approved and Texas will be hosting the 2012
New Zealand Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas. We
hope that everyone will gather their spirit of
adventure and travel to Texas in April of 2012.
Several other breeds will be sharing the venue
and combining efforts to make this a fantastic
experience for all involved. Remember, rolling
downhill here is easy. You can worry about
getting home later.
We should all be making plans for the journey
to convention in Minneapolis, MN this fall. This
Texas boy is a little concerned about driving in
the November weather up North; but, Adam
tells me he will keep me informed. Our fellow
exhibitors from the North are more reliable than
the weather man.
Texas has had a cool
spring. Summer is well
on its way. Keep those
bunnies cool and ready
for the fall.
Until next time,
ow, what a
Wdifference W
a week
makes. The weather has gone
from below average temps to
today on May 24 94 degrees. With the humidity
high also it made for a very uncomfortable day
especially since we baled over 700 bales of hay
today. Anyhow lets start off by talking about
the spring national in Greenville Ohio. The
numbers of New Zealand’s were very good and
all the colors were very well represented. It was
very exciting because this was the first national
the Brokens showed as a approved variety.
Congratulations to Dave Mangione for being the
first winner ever with Brokens at the national.
Sara and I were very excited to win the Jr. doe
class with a Red Broken so the future is looking
bright for the reds as well. Other winners were
Paul Grundtisch with BOB with a white 6-8 buck,
Dave Mangione with BOS, Cooper & Esterline
with the best black and Sara and I with the Best
Red. For a complete list of all the open and
youth winners look for the listings in the back
of the magazine. Other than the banquet being
a little chilly the whole weekend went very
well and the Ohio people did a very good job
of running the show as usual. I would also like
to congratulate Mark Manglberger and the Texas
club for getting the 2012 spring nationals in Ft.
Worth Texas. Mark and his wife did a very good
job of putting the flyer together telling about
all the things to do in Ft. Worth. Having been
to Ft. Worth before I am looking very forward
to going back and also excited because the Cal
nationals along with several others are going to
be there also.
It should also be mentioned that the New
Zealand club has just recently lost one of its
longtime members with Harry Rice passing away.
While I didn’t know Harry personally, I always
saw him around at all the nationals and New
Zealand club meetings for as long as I’ve raised
New Zealands. He will be greatly missed since
he has been a part in so many ways with the club
providing leadership and advice for decades.
The last thing I would like to mention is I
would like to thank everybody for giving me a
opportunity to be a director in this club. I have
really enjoyed meeting all of you from all over
the country. I think the national shows are a
great thing because so many people show up
who all have the same interest in showing high
quality New Zealand rabbits. Good luck with
your rabbits this summer and I would appreciate
your vote in being able to continue as your
s has been a good
T ow season. We
have had cooler weather
that usual for the gulf coast
which has helped the rabbits
to eat better and hold their
fur. The New Zealand’s have done well in the
shows in this part of the country. At the Harris
County double show, NZ’s took best in show 3 out
of 4 shows. In the Houston Livestock show and
Rodeo (HLSR) meat pen competition, this is the
second year in a row that we have done better
than the Cals our biggest meat pen competitor.
NZ’s took 6 of the 10 top pens and there was only
15 pens of NZ’s out of the 100 plus pens entered.
In the HLSR open show, the NZ’s took BIS. At the
Texas state show the BOB was a broken doe and
she was 2nd runner up. So let’s keep it going
across the US.
It was good to see everyone in Greenville!
A good time, with good people. My thanks to
the Ohio club for putting on a good show and
making us feel at home. That was the first time
in Greenville and I like the area. It reminds me
a lot of the area I grew up, New Philadelphia,
PA. I know a lot of people said it was cold on
Sunday morning, but I enjoyed the frost on the
grass that morning. So did my bride Lori, as she
walked her dog, Gizmo, before we took off for
home.
Last but not least, I want to thank Lisa for
getting the neat NZ T-shirts made up for that
show. Take care and we hope to see you in
Harry Rice was one of a kind!.
Director Report
by
David Cardinal, WI
ust cant believe we
Ihave I lost yet another
great rabbit breeder and
Friend.
Harry was the First New Zealand Rabbit
Breeder that kept me on the track raising New
Zealands, When I met Harry several years ago
around 1976. I had New Zealands and Rex, He
said David you only need one breed and it is not
Rex, So he turned me to raise only New Zealands
for a long time.
Harry always believed in taking the time to
teach anyone about the New Zealands, that
wanted to learn, or if they didn’t he made them
listen to his speech’s all the time. He always had
a way to talk in circles to keep your attention
to him.
When Harry was Secretary of The New
Zealand Federation, he kept the club together,
he handled his job and other jobs and had no
problems balancing the club. He always worked
hard to keep the club going smoothly.
One time around 1980 at the ARBA Convention
in New York, I went up to Harry and said I need
a good strong Buck, He said I have the one you
need, and I bought that rabbit for $25.00.
The next day when the Judging was going on
the buck placed second Junior buck, I was so
proud that I had such a great rabbit from Harry.
So on the close of the convention after work I
went to the show grounds to pick up the rabbit,
most of the rabbits and the exhibitors were
gone. As I went to get my buck out of his cage,
he looked different and the tattoo was different,
So I took the rabbit home.
When I got home I called Harry and asked what
happened to my buck. He said that he replaced
it with a better one. I didn’t question him I just
said OK. About a Month latter I moved back to
Florida. Then in the spring I showed that Buck
in North Carolina after the National Rex show.
He was picked Best in Show, Which was great.
Then few months after that I showed him again
in Florida and Fibber judged and picked him for
Best of Breed and told me that was a great buck.
Then later that day Fibber and Harry picked best
in Show and picked that Buck. Harry asked me
were did I get a Fine buck like that, I said Harry I
picked him from you from the ARBA Convention.
Harry looked in the ear and said, I guess you
got the better Rabbit. Then I found out later
on that the rabbit was not raised by Harry, and
was swapped for the first Buck that I picked out
at the convention. Harry was always swapping
rabbits for rabbits, even if that rabbit wasn’t
raised by Harry, it did not matter as it was his
complete line of breeding on the pedigree.
I remember one time at the National all New
Zealand show a few years ago, Harry had a
nice doe that placed pretty high, I said Harry I
would like to buy her. And over the years Harry
sold mequite a few Rabbits pretty cheap and
sometimes gave me rabbits. On this day Harry
said David this is a nice doe and I would need
from you $75.00. I thought that was still a pretty
good price, so I took her home and bred her. Her
young were very nice all eight of them. They
were so good that I entered a buck and doe in
the ARBA Convention held in Wisconsin that year
in the intermediate class.
As the convention came and Judging started
my buck was first intermediate buck, and then
the doe was third. That was pretty darn good.
Harry came up and said what was the doe bred
from? I told Harry that doe I got from you in the
spring. Harry said he wanted to buy that doe
that placed third. I said OK for $75.00 since that
was what I paid for the mother. Harry said will
you take $20.00 for her? I had this puzzled look.
He said David the doe you got from me had eight
babies and cost maybe $10,00 each to eat so
that’s $80.00. so you are making $10.00 profit.
I said What!
I finally gave in, Just take the rabbit as a gift.
As Harry was always there for me.
Harry always had a great sense of humor. These
are only two stories about Harry. If I had to
mention more I would fill the entire Times, but
as you see Harry was a very special person that
will be missed dearly. Harry Rice’s wife Deskie is
a wonderful person as she put up with Harry for
many years and was always behind him.
Writing letters about two great New Zealand
Rabbit Breeders and Friends, Harry Rice and
Fibber McGee has been very hard for me as they
were more than great guys that helped keep me
on this wonderful track of raising and Judging
New Zealands. They were my mentors and close
Friends, and they will be missed.
I went to the National New Zealand show in
Ohio with no rabbits, and had a great time. I
checked out lots of New Zealands. The Brokens
look like they are coming in strong. It was a
great show and was smoothly run, like always
for Ohio. Congrats to all the winners in the open
and youth, There was a lot of outstanding New
Zealands that went across the table, and the
Judges had to work hard but they sure enjoy
Judging them.
New Zealands may not be the large number of
rabbits at local shows, but the quaity is excellent
and classes are deeper than most breeds, So, yes
to some of you that question, are we the breed
in the lead? We dont need numbers to have that.
Our dedication is to this club, the National New
Zealand Rabbit Breeders, and to raise and breed
such outstanding rabbits that are closer to the
standard than most other breeds.
Take care see you all in the fall
Harry Rice. He started
many good breeders,and
improved many breeders
with all of his valued knowledge.I personally
remember taking trips with my dad Curtis
Himmelberger and Sam Gerardi to the K O
in Piketon. He will be sadly missed.
On a brighter note, I want to compliment the
OHIO CLUB on a very well run show. The cooping
set up was excellent. as well as the judging
being excellent. Congratulations to all of the
winners and all who showed. The competition
was very keen. PAUL GRUNDTISCH took BOB with
an outstanding 6-8 white Buck and Best display
with a tremendous string of whites
DAVE MANGIONE took BOS with a very good Sr.
Doe. Dave also had best broken. The brokens
were very competitive! AL ESTERLINE had best
black and SARA KLINDT had best red with a very
nice Sr. Doe.
It was good to see JIM BOUNAKES and LILLIAN
ATWOOD back at a National. Jim has some very
good whites in great condition. JIM BOUNAKES
was also inducted TO THE HALL OF FAME.. well
deserved. Congratulations to Jim.
Congratulations also to the TEXAS CLUB on its
From the Editor
Another issue of the Times is about to hit
the press. With it goes another great
loss to the Federation, and the entire rabbit
industry.
Harry Rice has left us to be with Fib, Oren, and
a whole lot of other rabbit breeders, judges, and
showmen.
It is very rare that an icon such as Harry comes
along, and simply having the opportunity to
know him, work with him, talk with him, and
be critiqued by him is indeed a very humbling
experience.
You rarely had to ask Harry where you stood
with him, as he was a man that indeed would
let you know. Although he may have seemed a
bit crass or blunt, once you got to know Harry
you were aware that under the hard skin was a
heart of gold, and a man that truly loved rabbits,
people, and life.
I certainly did not know Harry the way that
Chris Hayhow, Glen Carr, Bobby Byrne, and
others did, but I did know Harry well enough to
know he was a person that would leave a mark
on the rabbit world forever.
Harry was a true believer in Youth, and he
helped many in his time. I suppose the most
memorable time with Harry I had was judging
a Youth show in Ohio with him in my very early
years. He offered the “newbie” some advice by
telling me that these kids are here because they
think their rabbit is the best rabbit in the world.
Don’t disappoint them by saying a bunch of bad
things about their animals.
I proceeded to go through the day trying my
best to say great things about each rabbit. I
watched Harry in between my classes once,
and from my table I could see a black rabbit
he was judging, that had a pretty good sized
white spot on it. Harry picked up the rabbit and
went over by a window, pulled a few hairs and
looked at them, then brough the rabbit back to
the judging table. He looked it over again, then
went back over by the window again. Oddly, he
did the same routine, pulling a few hairs and
holding them up to the window, then throwing
them down on the ground. After about 3 or 4
times of doing this, Harry looked at the Youth
exhibitor and said, “Gee, I thought your rabbit
had a white spot, but there isn’t one.”
Harry had a knack of doing the right thing at
the right time or saying the right thing to bolster
up someone that was down at the right time.
He always seemed to use diplomacy and tact
in a manner that made him look like the most
knowledgeable man in the world, and I am not
so sure that he wasn’t.
Harry was.....Harry. There is no other way to
put it. There has never been, nor will there ever
be another like him.
If we had a “Harry” come along every few
years and grace our ranks, this hobby would be
a much better experience for many. I know I will
remember Harry fondly. My deepest sympathies
to Deskie and Harry’s family.
Can you picture a table with Harry, Fib, Oren,
and a few others sitting around just shooting
the breeze? I can just hear the stories they are
telling. If I was a betting man, I think I would
know who I would place my money on to tell the
biggest and best “story” !
Bless you Harry, and Good Night.
was made by Pete Basgil, 2nd by Lisa Jennings
to accept these changes. Once Sec. Neff has it
updated the Application will be posted on the
website.
Judge Selection, Chairman Dave Mangione
passed a list around to the BOD for review of
the judges hired for furture Conventions. Arnie
Schmidt made a motion to accept the list of
judges presented, 2nd by Mark Manglberger. This
list will be published in the website.
the 2010 Outstanding Member Award.
Arnie then reported that he received the
name of Jim Bounakes to be added to our Hall of
Cardinal to approve the addition of Jim Bounakes
to the Hall of Fame. It was also decided by the
BOD to award these deserving members at the
2010 National Show Banquet, since they were
all present.
Old Business:
Resolution-by law changes, clean up. Tony
Bell read a list of changes that need to be made
mainly because of the addition of the Brokens,
Meat Pens & Single Fryers, also some general
clean up. A membership vote is needed for this
to be changed & a special meeting will be held
at the 2010 National Show banquet to allow the
members to hear the changes and to cast their
votes. A motion was made by John Logsdon, 2nd
by Lisa Jennings to approve these changes & to
present to the membership.
Judging Protocal-National & Convention
Shows. A discussion to fine tune this policy was
held. Tony Bell will type up the procedure and
upon BOD approval this will be posted on the
website.
New Business:
Newletter/website. Pres. Borden read a report
from Dick Gehr. It was decided that we will not
publish the current “Times” on the website. This
will be updated as the new issues of the “Times”
are mailed.
Domestic Partnership membership protocal.
After some discussion it was decided that the
AFNZRBA will follow whatever protocal that the
ARBA uses for this situation. We will continue to
monitor this, and will make any changes if we
see that the ARBA changes their policy.
National Show Bids. We received an outstanding
bid from the Texas NZ Club for the 2012 National
from their President, Mark Manglberger. The
show dates would be
April 20-22, 2012. The show would be in
Ft. Worth and held in conjunction with the,
Californian, Silver Marten, Flemish Giant, Florida
White & Thrianta Nationals. Judges, David
Cardinal, Bob Koch, Connall Addison & Wade
Burkhalter with James Murray as a standby.
After some discussion a motion was made by
Lisa Jennings, 2nd by Fred Saputo to accept the
Texas Bid.
The Illinois NZ Club had also hoped to place a
bid for 2012. Arnie Schmidt mentioned that they
would now like to place a bid for 2013. The bid
was tabled to allow Arnie and the Illinois Club to
come up with more details.
Bruce Himmelberger & Rick Shipe gave a
report on the 2011 PA National. Full details will
be posted and updated on the website..
a Lap Top Computer System for all of the Club
Thanks Harry!
rry Rice is the reason Paul and I have
Hbeen H a part of and served this club. We
have been both directors and President. Harry
somehow talked Paul into running for president
back in 1987. I have never figured how he did
that. Paul had never been interested in the
politics of the rabbit business, he just enjoyed
raising the rabbit. Harry Rice, as most everyone
found out once you knew him, could talk anyone
into almost anything. If Harry thought someone
would be beneficial to the Federation they would
soon find themselves on the ballot for the next
election. I remember the story back in the late
80’s or early 90’s when there weren’t enough
directors running for the spots open. Harry
just picked some members out and then had a
petition signed and then he let them know they
were running. He always knew what he wanted
for this club and although you might disagree
with him, he was usually right. The first thing
I did when I was approached about running for
president was to call Harry to ask his opinion.
There had never been a women president and I
wasn’t sure the “ good old boys club” was ready
for that. Harry not only gave me his blessing but
said “it was time”.
Harry and his dear wife Deskie served this club
as secretary from 1979 thru 1990. Harry always
gave Deskie the credit and told everyone he
couldn’t have done it without her. They were
partners and how lucky we were to have had
them dedicate time to
this Federation.
So we thank you Harry
for all you have done
for this club. I hope you
know how special you
were to us.
We will miss you.
Dear Deskie, we send you our love and
sympathy for your loss .
You and Harry were a
great team!
“once in a lifetime”
rry was a master breeder, promoter
Hand H judge of the New Zealand breed.
Harry was the Babe Ruth of New Zealands, hitting
more home runs with his Knock out Strain of New
Zealands which most of us can only imagine.
Harry truly paid forward giving great leadership,
time as well as developing superior genetics as
he improved the breed that he loved.
Harry was not a soft spoken man and you did
not have to guess as to what was on his mind
as Harry would eventually tell you if you stood
around long enough. Harry had that unique
character of believing and standing for what was
right. He always took the time to help a young
breeder and share his experiences and oh, let’s
not forget all those stories he told whenever
he had the opportunity. You see, Harry was in
some ways like a preacher, spreading the word
about New Zealands as he journeyed across the
country from showroom to showroom.
I remembered talking to Harry about my
intention to develop a broken variety New
Zealand. I could quickly tell that Harry was not
very fond of the idea. His comment was, “Why
do we need another variety when we already
have three” but none the less Harry encouraged
me to move forward but with one request, “Just
make sure they are Good!” I gave Harry my word
that anything less would be unacceptable.
Harry Rice truly paid forward giving his time,
talent, leadership and wisdom to the breed and
organization he so dearly loved.
I will miss Harry Rice, a once in a lifetime
friend, breeder and promoter of the BREED IN
THE LEAD – NEW ZEALANDS.
Farewell But Not Goodbye
to My Friend – Harry Rice
had the privilege of meeting Harry Rice
Iaround I 1978 when he was in the Western
part of North Carolina judging a rabbit show.
That day began a life-long friendship with an
honorable man who was dedicated to making a
difference among rabbit breeders nationwide.
Back in those days, the late 70’s and early 80’s,
we were in Tipton, Indiana at a rabbit show.
Harry was judging this show, as he did for the
past 65 years or more and I bought a doe from
him – a great doe. The doe I purchased became
some of my foundation stock – producing award
winning rabbits for years to come.
Harry was more than just someone I knew as
being an outstanding rabbit breeder. He was my
friend - my personal friend, and he and Deskie
were like family to me and Peggy. I have so
many fond memories of all our times together
over the past 30 plus years. We always planned
trips to the Convention’s and many rabbit shows
together and stayed at the same hotels. All the
men would go to the shows and talk rabbits
while the women went out to shop. There was
a group of us that always got together to go out
to eat. Harry always wanted to ride with Peggy
when we went out to eat. I can hear him saying
now, “I don’t know where you all are going, but
I’m going wherever Peggy is going because I am
riding with her and Robert.” Now he liked to go
out to eat and enjoy a good meal, but he had
no time for standing in a line and
waiting to get in a restaurant.
For the past 20 or so years, a
group of us made a yearly trek
to Gatlinburg, Tennessee the
weekend after Thanksgiving.
Harry would always call in
September and say, “you better
be getting ready, it is about time
to go to Gatlinburg”. He loved
to sit in the rocking chairs, watch
the traffic go by, watch people
and talk rabbits. We often went
over to visit another good friend,
Bill Smith, who lived close to
Gatlinburg. Of course, as always,
the women went shopping.
These were some good times and
wonderful memories that I will
never forget and wouldn’t trade
for anything.
Something I will always cherish is a Case knife
that Harry gave me many years ago. He was
always wanting to give me something. I carry
that knife every day and think of him every time
I pull it out of my pocket. He had a heart of
gold.
In later years, the last 5 years or so, Harry said
to me many times, “Robert, remember this, be
sure you spread your New Zealand breed around.
By spreading it around the United States you
guarantee the quality and excellence in rabbit
breeding for years to come.” I will never forget
what he said and I knew why he had been such
a success as a rabbit breeder. He was “forward
thinking” about preserving the New Zealand
stock. I have honored his advice to me.
I will miss our trips, I will miss talking to him
every month, I will miss a good man and I will
miss my good friend. I will cherish the memories.
There will never be another Harry Rice – the
man who did more for the New Zealand Rabbit
Breeders Federation than anyone before him or
to come. Harry Rice and the man he was will live
on for many, many years to come.
Farewell my friend, I will see you again.
Harry Rice
e deadline for our tributes to Harry for
Tthe T New Zealand Times is upon us and I
still can’t get down on paper all that I wish to
say about my friend Harry. I’ve been thinking
about what to say for a month now ever since
we lost him on April 8th. It’s been really difficult
for me personally because Harry meant so much
to me in so many ways. He was a friend, mentor,
colleague, idol, and much more.
When the good Lord blessed Harry into this
world I’m sure he said there would be no other
like him!! Over the course of Harry’s 92 years
there was no one like him. He was uniquely
Harry.
When I first met Harry in 1956 I was a 13 year
old boy just beginning my long journey in the
“rabbit world”. Harry quickly befriended me and
encouraged and aided me through every step
of my hobby and career. He always supported
the underdog and the novice exhibitor always
offering advice and free rabbits when needed to
improve one’s herd.
Every year for several Harry would judge at
the Ohio State Fair. Not being able to travel
far this show was my special show of the year
showing my Checkered Giants. One year after
the judging, Harry offered to buy the pair that
I had won BOB and BOS with over the old guard
of breeders, Traxler and Bennett. He offered
me $25.00 for each animal. That was a heck of a
lot of money to me. I declined his offer however
and within six weeks I had lost both animals.
Lesson learned. Never turn down a good offer.
When I decided to become
a cavy judge while waiting to
become eligible to get a rabbit
judge license I passed the
written exam and worked my
required three shows with a
judge. Harry was one of those
judges. Yes, he had a cavy judge
license at that time! At the
beginning of the day he said to
me “son, you place these critters
as you see fit. If I disagree I’ll
let you know”. He proceeded to
sit down behind the table and
didn’t get up until I was finished
with all of the judging. He said
“you done good, son.”
When I worked for my rabbit judges license,
of course I assisted Harry and was honored that
he encouraged me in every sense. At one show
he said to me “ are you going to assist Judge so
and so today? I acknowledged that I was. He said
“son, whatever that judge tells you just believe
the opposite and you will be fine”. Harry was
right on giving me sound advice.
Over the years Harry and I traveled to many
a show together. I always drove! I never got
sleepy because Harry was so entertaining with
his stories. I really miss those times. One of
my favorite stories was about a national New
Zealand show when his best senior buck was
quickly dismissed from the class. A bit later the
count in the class had been determined to be
incorrect, a rabbit was missing. Harry quickly
went back to the coop and got his best buck that
had already been dismissed and put him back
on the table proclaiming that it was the missing
entry. That buck proceeded to win the class!! It
was a great story when told by Harry himself.
Another favorite memory of Harry was again
at the Ohio State Fair some years after I had
become a judge. I worked the show along with
Harry and a couple of other judges I can’t recall.
I had won BOB Checkered Giant and Lakie Watts,
a wonderful New Zealand breeder won BOB New
Zealand. We both felt we had a great chance to
win BIS especially because Harry was delegated
to do the honors. He almost always favored
one of our two breeds in the past. When all the
BOB’s came to the table I noticed that the junior
English Lop rabbit that was on the table was not
the one I had selected for BOB earlier in the day.
I decided that I wouldn’t intervene since I very
much doubted that it had a chance to win, why go
to the trouble. Harry weeded all the BOB’s down
to the final three breeds still
in contention, the Checkered
Giant, New Zealand, and the
English Lop. Lakie and I were
bantering with each other as
to which of us was going to win
when Harry suddenly opened
his Standard of Perfection
book. I immediately told Lakie
that we were both going to lose
because Harry knew our breeds
extremely well and if he went
to his standard that meant he
was strongly considering the
English Lop. He announced the
English Lop as BIS. After the
applause I went to Harry and
told him that the English Lop
23 April - May - June 2010...

he selected didn’t win BOB, it
was mistakenly brought to the
table. Harry didn’t miss a beat
he said “well, just think of how
much better the true BOB would
have been”!!
In 1990 at the ARBA National Convention in
Tampa, Florida I had the extreme pleasure to
announce and present the highest honor the
ARBA recognizes, induction to the Hall of Fame,
to Harry. It was long overdue for a person that
had been a member since 1933 and all of the
contributions to the hobby and industry made by
him. He came up to receive his bronze plaque.
he shook my hand, said thank you and added
“it’s about time”. Harry never minced words. He
told it like it was. I always admired that quality
about him.
In later years, residing in Illinois for over
25 years, I didn’t see Harry that often but
when we did meet he would have advice and
encouragement for me. He was my idol.
My last memory of Harry occurred this past
November in Piketon, Ohio. In failing health
he was able to attend the show for a brief
while. I was privileged to acknowledge Harry’s
contribution to the New Zealand breed and
thanked him on behalf of all present and those
that have come and gone.
There was and will be only one Harry Rice!!
A th the passing of my dear friend Harry
WRice, W we lost an ARBA Judge, ARBA
Hall of Fame member, rabbit promoter, master
rabbit breeder and tremendous friend. Harry
was also a husband, father and gentlemen.
Harry Rice dedicated his life to rabbits. Harry
was a master rabbit breeder, master showman,
master promoter, and master judge for the
American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA).
He first joined the ARBA in 1933, and in 1994
became an honorary life member. In 1940,
Harry received his ARBA Registrar and Judge
licenses. Harry judged in over 41 states and
several Canadian provinces, and officiated at
over 3,000 rabbit shows in his lifetime. These
41 states and Canadian provinces were all seen
behind the wheel of a semi truck or car, since
Harry Rice would not get on an airplane. He
was one of the greatest judges the ARBA ever
had and was also one of the association’s most
admired senior judges.
Harry was a member of numerous local, state
and national rabbit clubs; however his love was
always with the New Zealand and Dutch rabbits.
Harry joined the American Federation of New
Zealand Rabbit Breeders, which was the national
club, on November 1, 1949. He purchased his
first New Zealand’s in 1938, at the Columbus,
Ohio Convention. Harry skillfully served the
national New Zealand club as secretary for
many years. He was an active member of the
Portsmouth Rabbit Breeders, and a Hall of Fame
Member of The Ohio State Rabbit Breeders. He
was inducted into the American Rabbit Breeders
Association Hall of Fame in 1990, the highest
award that can be bestowed on a member. He
was elected to serve on the American Rabbit
Breeders Association Board of Directors, as well
as on numerous committees. Along with his wife
Deskie they formed the well known K O Rabbitry
in Portsmouth, Ohio. The KO Rabbitry was known
throughout the rabbit world as a producer of top
notch breeding animals and quality show stock.
The 2001-2005 ARBA Standard of Perfection,
which was dedicated to Harry sums it up best,
he was “The Sage of Portsmouth.”
There was only one Harry Rice! His stories
and smile could cheer up anybody. It was my
extreme honor to call him a very dear friend!
Please keep his family in your thoughts and
prayers.
We love you and salute you dear friend! Rest
in peace!
Thank you
IS YOUR
RABBITRY PROPERLY
VENTILATED?
Properly ventilated rabbitries will enhance
health, growth, reproduction and overall
condition of rabbits. Conversely, rabbitries
that are not properly ventilated will cause
deterioration of the aforementioned traits.
The temperature for optimum rabbit
performance is about 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Summer heat stress is a severe problem with
rabbits. Continuous exposure to temperatures
greater than 85 degrees Fahrenheit for 4-5 days
can cause sterility for up to 60 days in mature
bucks (bucks usually older than one year). All
rabbits are vulnerable to heat prostration
when cage temperatures exceed 92 degrees
Fahrenheit.
During the winter, naturally ventilated housing
is adequate for mature rabbits provided there
are no drafts. Supplemental heat can minimize
frozen water, water lines and maintain growth &
performance.
Relative humidity below 35 % dries the
respiratory tract which can lead to respiratory
problems (i.e. Snuffles). The same issues can
occur when humidity levels exceed 65 % where
too much moisture is present in the air.
Insulating walls and roofs of buildings will
reduce or moderate summer temperatures in
the building and reduce winter supplemental
heat loss. Insulating roofs of outside structures
can also help to moderate the affect of summer
heat on rabbits.
A healthy air environment in the rabbitry can
only be achieved through proper ventilation.
Maintaining a healthy air environment in a
building is more difficult verse an outside
structure (hutch and/or open front shed).
Manure buildup as well as excessive hair
on cages will reduce air quality and airflow.
Removing manure and excessive hair in the
rabbitry is critical to maintaining a healthy air
environment.
So where does one go to find out:
What size fan do I need?
How many fans do I need?
What type of fan is best?
Where do I locate the fans?
What other types of devices are available?
What size building is best for natural
ventilation?
How much air do I need to move through the
building?
The answer to these questions and others
relevant to ventilation can be found through the
Midwest Plan Service. The Midwest Plan Service
contains detailed ventilation publications with
information for rabbits! YES I SAID RABBITS!!!!!!!
You can access these for sale publications online
at www.mwps.org.
Properly ventilated rabbitries are synonymous
with successful breeding and show stock
programs. Ask your self this question, is the air
they are breathing the air you want to breathe?
Ventilation provides fresh air and fresh air is
what a bunny needs.
I didn’t get to go, but
the rabbits sure had a
great show !!
Editor’s note: I received the following in an
email and just had to share it with everyone.
Looks like Wendall Tisher has the right idea by
helping others with good rabbits. Way to go,
Wendall....you made someone very happy !!
Last weekend, April 10 and 11, The Kootenai
River Rabbit Club, based in Libby, Montana,
sponsored 4 open ARBA sanctioned rabbit shows.
These shows were held in Kalispell, Montana, at
the Fairgrounds there.
I was not able to attend due to medical
problems, but a friend of mine talked me into
letting her take some of my New Zealands,
including one nice Black Broken senior doe, and
showing them for me. I am sure glad I did.
On Saturday, under judges Allan Ormond and
Cindy Wickizer, my lone little Black Broken doe
was awarded Best of Breed and earned two legs.
The icing on the cake was later though, as Allan
Ormond really liked this doe and awarded her
Best In Show.
These shows are small, according to some in
the Midwest and East, but we do have some nice
animals here and I am really pleased with this.
There was a total of 12 New Zealands entered,
11 Whites and my one Black Broken doe. Two
of the Whites were mine, 7 belonged to a friend
from Idaho, another was owned by a breeder in
Libby, MT and another by my Grandson’s wife,
they live next door and have just a few NZ for
meat producers. There were enough animals
entered to give legs to both BOS and BOSV in
the Whites so we were all pleased with that.
Since the shows in this area are mostly about
300 miles apart we do not have as big of shows
as other parts of the country, but we try to get
good judges and has as high quality a show as
we can.
I bought this doe from Wendall Tisher in the
fall of 2008 and she has become a special pet.
I did not even see the doe or any pictures of
her, just told Wendall that I wanted a nice trio
and he picked three beautiful rabbits for me. I
am so grateful to him for sending me such nice
stock.
I showed her in May of 2009, at our local
Western Montana Rabbit Fanciers ARBA shows,
and both the judges, Lawrence Weeks and
Nancy Richmond really like her then also. Both
wanted to give her Best of Breed over some nice
Whites then, but of course could not because
the Brokens were not recognized at that time.
I have been holding on to her hoping she would
keep her nice type and quality until the Brokens
were recognized and I could show her for legs. I
am sure glad that I did.
I have attached a couple of pictures of her.
One with the judge Allan Ormond, which is not
the best as it shows only her rear end, and a
couple of her sitting on the specially made quilt
that was given as the BIS award. The picture
with Allan was taken by a friend at the show.
She said she would send a couple others when
she can but thought this was the best she had.
This friend is also a New Zealand breeder and
is disabled so I think I am lucky to have gotten
what I did. She also made the quilts that KRRC
used for their BIS awards.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I
hope you can at least make out the rabbit in the
pictures. They are not really posed pictures,
but do show her markings anyway.
Mary Esther Betson
Editor’s Note:
I just got an email
from Mary that said
she Championed out
this Broken Doe, and
will now be retiring
her to the breeding
program.
Way to go Mary !
This might be the fi rst Broken NZ to obtain an
ARBA Grand Champion status.....not sure....
