SAFETY COUNTS! Field Day Continued... Field Day Shoot Aug. 5, 2006 This fun shoot is open to anyone that is interested. If you cannot put together a five person team, just show up and we will find you some team members. THE STATIONS: (These are examples from prior events and may differ slightly for 2006.) “DUCK TOWER” - SHOTGUN A pair of clay birds released from a 45 ft. tower 5 Pairs 10 birds total 1 point per hit “FUR AND FEATHER” - SHOTGUN 2 clay targets released in tandem 5 pairs 10 birds total 1 point per hit “BOAR RUN” - PISTOL 2 sets of five shots each (30 second time limit per set) 10 shots Each hit 1 point “BOW HUNT” - STICK & STRING To be determined by WSB organization “SHEEP HUNT” - RIFLE 250+ yards—gong silhouette target 10 shots Each hit 1 point 3 shots off hand 3 shots sitting or kneeling 4 shots from rest (5 minute time limit) “ELK HUNT” - RIFLE 100 yards—Bullseye target 10 shots Each hit 1 point 3 shots off hand 3 shots sitting or kneeling 4 shots from rest (5 minute time limit) Shotgun Max 12 Ga. 7 1/2 - 8 - 9 size shot 20 rounds Rifle Minimum 243 20 rounds Handgun 9MM or Larger 10 rounds *** We will have a bow shooting station this year. *** WE NEED YOUR HELP !! 1. Volunteers to help run the five shooting stations. If you do not want to shoot, please come and help by staffing one of the shooting stations. Call Joe Longo (509) 965-9363 if you can help with the events. 2. Silent auction items, live auction items. 3. Your support getting yourself and your friends to come help us make some money for Hunter’s Heritage. This is where all the proceeds will go. We need to raise all the funds we can to advance our causes. We have not reserved any rooms for this event in Yakima. You can reserve a room at the convention center hotel by calling (509) 248-5900, or the Howard Johnson hotel right next door at (509) 425-6511. There are also several other hotels in the near area to choose from. More information on this event will follow. We will put out a list of hunts that will be auctioned at the banquet. Please note that 100% of the money raised from this event will go into the Hunter’s Heritage Council treasury to fight for our hunting rights. We need every Council member group to bring at least one shooting team and some donations to this event. 16
Gators ...Continued from page 9 They quickly dispatched it with bamboo sticks, skinned it and tacked it up to dry. Meanwhile, Trevor, Billy and his dad, Will, headed out to the bayou gator grounds on two separate swamp boats. The Martinez brothers were skippering these boats. On the way, the lead boat noticed a large, floating gator and swerved to avoid colliding with the reptile. The second craft, following closely behind, was not so fortunate and hit the submerging gator. As the outboard motor caught the reptile, the prop was thrust out of the water, causing the boat to lose control, hit a log along the bank and overturn. This boat had the quad lashed to its deck so the craft settled, bottom up with the quad underwater. The Martinez Brothers placed Trevor on the bank with his rifle to act as lookout and ward off the gator they had just hit. The Martinez Brothers then dove under the capsized boat to cut the quad loose so the craft could be righted. After considerable effort the two guides, with the help of Trevor, Will & Billy retrieved the quad, refloated and bailed the boat, then repacked all the gear and prepared to continue. After this harrowing experience Will Poppie feared that they would have to return to camp. "No way," the Martinez Brothers said, "We're going gator hunting!" At the start of the hunt I'd taken the four boys aside and explained that they were responsible for their own actions and that advice paid off - not one of them wanted to become a gator's lunch and they all performed flawlessly. At the conclusion of day four we all departed from Baton Rouge and Lafayette for our homes in Alaska, Washington and Southern California. In my opinion there is only one way to raise young men who will become great hunters and leaders of our nation, the United States of America, is to expose them to fishing, hunting, the out-of-doors and the reality that they are responsible for their own actions. Brayden & Dane w/ Copperhead Clynt Martinez w/ Quad & Swamp Boat Shannon, Brayden & Dane Kuiper This story was written by Wes Metheney, a lawyer and good friend, who wrote about his grandson's first hunting experience. It really expresses all the happiness and joy the outdoors and hunting can bring. John Lecky T Family Traditions—A Hunter’s Tail hanksgiving week was rapidly approaching. We were preparing for our annual deer scouting trip to the family farm on Back Mountain in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Always scheduled between squirrel season and deer season, the scouting trip and hunt have become real traditions. It was short sleeve fall weather, so my daughter, Kathie, decided she would accompany us. My son-in-law, Joe, decided it was time their son (and my only grandson) Elijah, learned to scout for whitetails. This beautiful fall day would be the perfect day to get Eli started. We left early on this fine Saturday morning. The trip and the hunter chatter that took place over walkie-talkies was about as much fun as Eli could handle. He was quite excited, and the clear blue sky, fresh air and newness of the experience tugged at his curiosity. As we drove through the gate and slowly made it to the upper meadow, I mused to myself that Eli really looked the part. From his Timberland boots to his jeans and sweatshirt, he was a young hunter, excited and eager to learn the ways of the woods. We carefully hiked the perimeter of the meadow, eagerly looking for trails, droppings and other deer sign. Eli became mesmerized. As we would come upon a rub, a scrape, or droppings, we carefully explained how it would help us in the upcoming hunt. We talked of our past experiences with high winds, rainy days, and blowing snow. Eli hung on every word as his dad explained the “science of scouting.” Eli would rub his fingers across the scars on the trees made by antlers and survey scrapes with an understanding frown, as if he had seen it all before. When the search for signs grew thin, Eli’s mom kept him occupied by pointing out birds or barking like a squirrel. He didn’t say much, but Eli took it all in. I selected a little maple tree and slowly and carefully carved his initials in the bark: ELI—2003. Eli stared at his name, touched the tree and giggled with glee. He now had his own special place on the family farm. But what he enjoyed the most was pulling off his boots and stretching his bare feet into the grass. Mimicking his granddad, he yanked off a blade of broom sage and stuck it in the corner of his mouth like a toothpick. As the afternoon went on, everyone reminisced about the fun we’d had that day. Eli agreed. Someday he’ll make a heck of a deer hunter. You could see the joy on seven month-old Eli’s little round chubby face. Not many boys get the experience he had. A s we drove down the ridge, Eli leaned back in his car seat, closed his eyes and dreamed of deer camp. The whole day will be remembered forever. It’s never too early to learn how to hunt. A family tradition. 17
