22 Field Hospital
22 Field Hospital is currently
deployed to Sierra Leone
in support of the UK
Government’s response to the
Ebola Virus Disease epidemic
in West Africa. Supported by
its Rear Operations Group, the
unit deployed over two-thirds
of its strength, and attached
augmentees from across
Defence, to run a specialist
Ebola treatment unit to treat
healthcare workers. Due to
handover and return to the
UK in May 15, the unit will
have little time to catch its
breath before moving to Keogh
Barracks over the summer.
4 Armoured Medical
Regiment
Elements of 4 Armoured
Medical Regiment have
recently been deployed on Op
GRITLOCK in order to establish
and run the Ebola Training
Academy in Sierra Leone.
They have trained 4000 Local
Nationals in just under 5 weeks
of training, many of whom did
not speak English. The Regiment
left confident that their Sierra
Leone counterparts were more
than capable of continuing
the essential lessons they
imparted. The remainder of the
Regiment have been involved in
Exercises in Poland, Adventure
Training and Mountain Biking
Championships.
Dental Department
The Dental Department at
Aldershot houses the Principal
Dental Officer (Surgeon Captain
A Jordan RN) and his RHQ,
who are responsible for the
provision of dentistry for entitled
personnel within DPHC (South);
the Centre for Restorative
Dentistry, who provide a
Consultant-led dental referral
service for all three Services;
and Dental Centre Aldershot,
who provide dental care for
Aldershot Garrison. Our teams
not only work in our clinics but
get out and about to Health
Fairs, promoting oral health,
and have deployed on Exercises
in Kenya as well as supporting
recent deployments.
Army Sport Control Board
The Army Sport Control Board
continues to support and
develop all sport and sporting
facilities in the Army. As well as
governing Sport Associations
and Unions, we also assist with
funding and coordination of sport
competitions and events. One
of the main ways we raise nonpublic
funds is through the Army
Sports Lottery, which we draw
weekly. It is open to all Regular
and Reserve Officers and soldiers
and is an electronic random
number selection. Tickets cost
75p and up to 5 can be brought
a week. Prizes range from
£10,000 to £200. Application is
1st
Battalion Grenadier Guards
The 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards are
currently committed to Public Duties.
However this has not stopped them
from undertaking part in Exercises in
Denmark and deployments in Cyprus
and the Falklands. Nor will it stop
them travelling to Nepal shortly! With
the 200th Anniversary of Waterloo
coming up the Battalion are working
hard. They are the only Regiment in
the British Army to have earned their
name for feats in battle during this
campaign. To honour this anniversary
the Battalion will be unveiling the newly
refurbished Hougoumont Farm.
The Army HIVE Information
Service works hard to respond
swiftly and efficiently to enquiries
from anyone within the service
community. We can offer
information on relocation, travel,
local and tourist information, unit
facilities, schools and education
for children, childcare and
early years information, further
education for adults, housing,
healthcare facilities, employment
opportunities, transition to
civilian life and much more.
Additional services available at
the HIVE include a fax machine,
free internet facilities, laminating
and photocopying and use of
the e-fax bluey facility.
1st Battalion Irish Guards
January for the Battalion started off with a ski trip to
Tignes for both beginners and the more advanced.
Sporting prowess has continued with the Football
Team reaching the Quarter Finals of the Infantry
Cup. There has also been plenty of military training
with Exercises to Oman, Scotland and deployment
to the Falklands. The Irish Guards’ Long Range
Reconnaissance Patrol team in Brunei came an
outstanding second in a very strong field; a fantastic
achievement. The Battalion has just had St Patrick’s
Day consisting of a Church Service, full parade
and lunch. Although numbers were smaller than
usual, this most important of Regimental days was
celebrated with just as much enthusiasm.
10 Queens Own Gurkha
Logistic Regiment
The Regiment has a number of
personnel deployed in Sierra
Leone. They have been tasked
to set up an Ebola Training Facility
and District Ebola Response
Centres, both of which are
now being used to great effect.
The remainder of the Regiment
celebrated the festival of Tihaar
(Dipawali), the only festival where
gambling is legal in accordance
with traditional Nepalese customs.
Sports has been high on the
agenda with major wins in the 4
Division and Royal Logistic Corps
Badminton Competitions. We
are now preparing to deploy to
Jordan on exercise to support 8
Engineer Brigade for seven weeks.
27 Regiment, Royal Logistic
we have been Command and
Control for a major exercise
in Ludgershall and have also
deployed personnel out to Sierra
Leone to assist with the Ebola
epidemic. The Regiment has
done exceptionally well in the
build up to the Royal Logistic
Corps Ski Championships, which
take place imminently, and was
able to include some adventure
training for the novices amongst
us. We now look forward to
hosting the Royal Logistic Boxing
Garrison Headquarters
The Garrison Headquarters
continues to work on
Community Engagement
through a number of avenues.
Most recently we have had
schools visiting different
Regiments, including the Gurkha
Temple, in line with and to
facilitate local curriculums. A
Garrison Health Fair was held
at the Aldershot Garrison
Sports Centre for all Garrison
members, families and local
schools which proved a
resounding success and we
continue to hold regular canal
days. In conjunction with the
local community we have
improved the canal towpath
making the canal more
accessible for all.
77 Army Education Centre
As well as delivering mandatory
education, 77 Army Education
Centre is in the roll out of
delivering language training as
well as coming in line with the
new Army Instructor Capability
Initiative. The centre has been
working hard on the iGCSE
scheme with the Garrison
soldiers and 57 personnel will
be sitting their GCSE exams in
English, Maths and triple Science
for free this summer. Additionally
the Centre champions the
University Short Course
Programme, a residential 2-5
day course to study at university
level with leading academics.
They are available to all ranks,
again free of charge.
Headquarters, 101 Logistic
Brigade
After an extremely busy period
that has seen the Brigade
grow from 7 Units to 19 Units
and re-subordinate to 3rd
Division, the Headquarters
has managed 2 Adventurous
Training Expeditions. The first
was a 3 week trek to Nepal in
order to tackle the Annapurna
Circuit. The team reached
a peak altitude of 5415m
before high snows meant an
amendment to the route. The
second expedition saw skiers
excelling in 2 weeks at Val
Thorens. 14 novices successfully
achieved their Ski Foundation 1
qualification.
Victory
Celebrations
in Aldershot,
1945
by Paul H Vickers, Prince Consort’s Library
Adolf Hitler committed suicide
on 30 April 1945, and on
the 4 May, Field Marshal
Montgomery received the
surrender of all German forces
in the Netherlands, North-west Germany
and Denmark. Back in Aldershot on
Monday 7 May the 3 o’clock news radio
bulletin announced that the enemy had
unconditionally surrendered, and the war in
Europe was over.
Anticipating the declaration of victory, people
at home had been preparing. As the official
announcement was made the town was
suddenly ablaze with colour as flags and bunting
appeared everywhere. The British Union
Flag joined flags of Allied countries, victory
slogans, decorations from the coronation of
King George VI and fairy lights strung out in V
for victory covered all available space. The bell
ringers of the Parish Church rang out a peal of
celebration in the evening.
The government declared that Tuesday 8 May
was officially “Victory in Europe Day”, or just
“VE Day”, and a two day national holiday was
announced. Throughout the day the local
cinemas, theatres and pubs were packed with
soldiers and locals. The celebrations of VE day
continued long into the evening. A Canadian
Unit’s pipe band led an impromptu parade
through the streets of Aldershot, gathering a
large crowd of soldiers, ATS girls and civilians
who all linked arms as they marched along.
Bonfires were lit, many burning effigies of Hitler,
and searchlights, floodlights, fireworks and
gunfire all added to the noise and colour.
At the Aldershot Recreation Ground a crowd
estimated around 10,000 assembled, including
British and Canadian troops and civilians, singing
Auld Lang Syne and the British and Canadian
National Anthems. The Band from the Royal
Military School of Music played continually
from 7.30 to 11.30, with only a 15 minute
break, as the crowds danced. Not wanting
their celebrations to finish so soon, the crowd
left the Rec and headed for the town centre,
singing as they went, marching up Victoria
Road, along Wellington Street to the Ritz
Cinema (now Gala Bingo) and back round.
On Wednesday 9 May the Army gave a Victory
Display at the Recreation Ground which
included a musical ride by the RASC Animal
Transport Company, a marching display by the
ATS drum and fife band, rhythmic exercises
by the Physical Training Corps, a motorcycle
display by the Military Police, and music from
the RASC Band. The following Sunday, 13
May, saw a more solemn event as the Camp
and town came together for a formal Service
of Thanksgiving. On parade were 3,650 British
and Canadian troops, including women’s
detachments, plus the Aldershot Civil Defence
Services, Fire Services, nurses, Home Guard,
and youth organisations.
All over the town Victory street parties were
held. The biggest was that in the West End,
at which 350 children were entertained with
children’s sport, singing contests, pony rides
and clowns and fed with all sorts of goodies.
In the evening the parents continued the
celebrations with games, community singing
and dancing to “amplified gramophone music”.
Despite the wartime hardships and shortages,
heroic efforts were made to give the children a
eal treat with many delicious offerings on the
tables. The Mayor of Aldershot, Alderman J W
White, attended every party, noting, on the 26
May, that this was the twenty-first party he had
attended in a fortnight!
Ex-Prisoners of War started returning to their
homes after liberation. On Thursday 14 May,
the town welcomed them home with a dinner
organised by the Trades Council at Darracott’s
Restaurant (which was on the corner of Union
Street and Grosvenor Road), during which
the Mayor expressed the town’s appreciation
for the men’s service and hoped that they
would all soon be restored to full health after
their ordeals. Following the meal the men
were guests at the Ritz Cinema, and publically
greeted by the manager who highlighted the
courage and fortitude of the men in captivity,
and hoped that their spirit would be an
example to all.
The VE Day celebrations were tempered,
however, by the knowledge that the war was
not yet fully over. Victory had been achieved in
Europe, but in the Far East the war continued
and thousands of British soldiers were still
engaged in bitter fighting against the Japanese.
It was not until midnight on Tuesday 14 August
that the official announcement was made that
the Emperor of Japan had unconditionally
surrendered to the Allies. Six years of war was
at an end.
In Aldershot, a few minutes after the midnight
announcement a large Victory “V” in lights was
switched on in St Michael’s Road, followed by
a flight of rockets which illuminated the sky.
The government declared another two-day
holiday for Wednesday and Thursday (15 and
16 August). Flags were brought out again and
flown from many buildings, and the celebrations
began again. A baseball match, at the
Recreation Ground, was staged on Wednesday
The group from the first photo seen ready for their tea in St Augustine’s Church Hall. The tables are arranged in
a “V for Victory”, and standing at the back is the Mayor with the party organisers.
with another Victory display from the Army
on Thursday. There was dancing under the
floodlights to music by the bands of the RASC
and 12th Lancers, and a fireworks display
brought the evening to a fitting end.
On Sunday 19 August a United Thanksgiving
Service was held at the Recreation Ground,
led by ministers and choristers from the
Royal Garrison Church, St George’s Garrison
Church, and St Michael’s Parish Church.
On parade were 2,000 British and overseas
servicemen and women, plus the Special Police,
British Red Cross, nursing sisters, and the Girls’
Training Corps. A minute silence was held to
remember the fallen, followed by a march past
the GOC, General Curtis, to loud cheers from
the huge crowds.
The final civic acts of thanksgiving were
presentations of the Freedom of the Borough,
the first of which was on 11 September to
the Hampshire Regiment. 7 Battalions were
represented by 400 men, each with their
colours. The Mayor presented the Colonel of
the Regiment, General Sir George Jeffreys, a
silver casket containing the parchment Freedom
scroll at the Recreation Ground. The regiment
marched through the town led by the mascot
“Fritz”, a St Bernard dog who had been rescued
by members of the regiment during their attack
on Arromaches in 1944.
On 26 September, the Freedom of Aldershot
was conferred on the Canadian Army Overseas,
the first occasion that such an honour was
given to an overseas army. Nearly 10,000
Canadian troops attended the parade at the
Recreation Ground. The Freedom was received
by Lieutenant General P J Montague of the
Canadian Military Headquarters, followed by
a parade through town and a Victory Ball for
charity at the Madia Gymnasium. Canadian Army
bands played for some 1,300 guests who danced
into the early hours.
The last Freedom presentation did not take place
until 1948 to Winston Churchill, in appreciation
his wartime leadership. For various practical
reasons the honour could not be presented in
1944 or 1945, so the ceremony was eventually
held on 6 July 1948 at the Dorchester Hotel
in London. 400 Aldershot people representing
both the military and civilian parts of the town
attended.
Aldershot, the Home of the British Army and
also the home of the Canadian Army Overseas
during the Second World War, had known its
share of grief and suffering. Although not as badly
bombed as some towns, because the town was
so closely intertwined with the Army the citizens
had keenly felt the anxiety for the safe return
of the troops and sorrow over those who fell.
In the 1945 celebrations was a mixture of joy
at the final victory, relief that it was all over, and
dignified remembrance for those who did not
return.
Ground (now the Aldershot Town Football Stadium) to mark the
Notices
The Aldershot Garrison Angling Club (AGAC) has vacancies
for serving military personnel and dependants in the forthcoming year.
To make contact with the club please contact the General Secretary at
agacsecretary@gmail.com giving your contact details.
Please be aware that recently Queens Avenue has been reduced
from 40 mph to 30 mph. If caught speeding, under the Road Traffic Act
1988, the minimum penalty is a £100 fine and three penalty points added
to your licence. If you build up 12 or more penalty points in a three year
period you will be disqualified from driving.
Frequently Asked
Questions
How do I book the Community Halls in the Connaught Centre,
Maurice Toye House or Quetta Park Centres?
For serving military families contact SO2 G1, Mr Ian Pointer, on 01252
348204. For non- military families contact Aspire Defence Limited on
01252 353181.
My street light is not working. Who is responsible for fixing it?
Firstly you need to note down the number of the street light, which
you will find on the light. Once you have the number ring Carillionamey
on 0800 707 6000. They have a register of all street lights and who
is responsible for them. If it is one of theirs they will come and fix it. If
it is not they will ring Rushmoor Council, who are responsible for the
remaining lights.
What should I do if I notice suspicious activity or people on the
family patches?
It is important to be aware of any suspicious activity both on family patches
and around military estates. If you do notice anything suspicious please
ring the MOD Police on 01252 338888 and report it straight away.
Remember it is better to be safe than sorry!
Have your say in the next
Edition
Please send in any questions you may have regarding the
Garrison, infrastructure, rules and regulations, activities, events
or anything that is bugging you to aldershotgarrisonherald@
gmail.com.
We will endeavour to find the right person to answer your question.
Users of carriage ways around Aldershot Garrison will notice a
rise in roadworks over the coming months due to the construction work
for the new Aldershot urban extension. Please take extra care when
negotiating these areas and give cyclists extra room where possible.
Within the confines of Aldershot Garrison the MOD employs
the use of Patrol Arm True (PAT) guard dogs. These dogs are trained
to attack and as part of their training are not ‘social animals’. They are
handled by the MOD Guard Service and should not be approached
without the handler’s permission. Please take extra care, around the area,
with your own dogs to avoid conflict.
The Aldershot Garrison Headquarters is pleased to
announce that it now has its own page on Facebook. ‘Like us’ to keep
up to date with forthcoming events, information about the Garrison and
progress reports on Project Wellesley.
The Garrison has been working tirelessly with the local
community to clear up the canal. A number of work days have happened
already and a lot of rubbish and overgrowth has been cleared from the
towpaths. We will be doing this again from September 2015- March
2016. Watch out for more details.
This year the Armed Forces Day National Event will be held in
Guildford on the 27th June. The Aldershot Military Festival Week will
still run from Monday 22 June to Friday 26 June as well as Sunday 28
June. There will be no Saturday event on Queens Parade; instead we
encourage you all to join us in Guildford this year. We will go back to the
normal programme in 2016.
MYTH
FACT
Myth or Fact? I fancy a few beers so I
will ride my bike home from the pub /
mess tonight, instead of driving. I can’t be
charged for it by the police.
unless it is constructed or adapted for the carriage of more than one
person. “Road” includes bridleway.
Myth – Road Traffic Act 1988 – A person who, when riding a cycle on
a road or other public place, is unfit to ride through drink or drugs (that is
to say, is under the influence of drink or a drug to such an extent as to be
incapable of having proper control of the cycle) is guilty of an offence.
Myth or Fact? The traffic lights are red and I’m cycling. I
don’t need to stop as I’m a cyclist.
Myth – Road Traffic Act 1988 – All road users of propelling vehicles
are committing an offence if they neglect or refuse to obey a signal or
direction.
Myth or Fact? I have my bicycle and my friend needs a lift. The
roads are quiet so I will make him my pillion and ride on the
roads, where I have more room. There’s no harm in that.
Myth – Road Traffic Act 1988 – Not more than one person may
be carried on a road on a bicycle not propelled by mechanical power
Myth or Fact? Its snowing/raining so hard I can barely see the
car less than 100m in front of me. I will put my lights and fog
lights to be safe even though it’s the middle of the day.
Fact – Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 – You MUST use
headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you
cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use
front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility
improves (see Rule 236).
Myth or Fact? I have flashing lights on my bicycle. I can’t use
them because they are illegal.
Myth – Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 – At night your cycle
MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted
with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured
after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will
also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is
recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street
lighting use a steady front lamp. [Law RVLR regs 13, 18 & 24)]”
In an emergency always call 999
There have been recent incidents of break-ins to houses, garages
and sheds in the Aldershot Garrison area. Whilst not wishing to
cause alarm, the Royal Military Police wish to assist you in raising your
awareness and asking you to be extra vigilant.
There are certain measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of
becoming a victim yourself, such as:
• Always lock all windows and doors when leaving.
• Consider installing an alarm system, which is visible on the outside
of your home.
• Never leave valuables on show.
• Never keep large amounts of cash at home.
• Never leave a spare key under a flower pot or door mat.
Potential offenders could not only break into your property, but
could also steal your car.
• Never leave garages or sheds unlocked. Your tools inside could
prove to be very useful to a potential offender who wants to gain
access to your property.
• Consider outside security lighting.
• Keep ladders secured and locked out of sight.
• Keep wheel-bins away from fences/gates, which access your
property, (these are used by thieves to easily climb over barriers).
• Join/display neighbourhood watch schemes.
• Before you go on holiday, don’t advertise the fact you are going
away on Facebook, Twitter etc.
• Ask any cold callers for identification, if you do not feel
comfortable, do not let them in.
Report any suspicious activity to the Royal Military Police on
Alternatively, you can call the civilian Police on 101
project
wellesley: new
homes mark
beginning of
a new era for
aldershot
Work has now begun on what will
eventually become a brand new
community of almost 4,000 new
homes for Aldershot.
Phase one of this ambitious 15-year project has
started with the first 228 homes being built on
the former Aldershot Garrison site. Eventually,
the scheme will transform the whole site into
a new community called Wellesley, creating an
urban extension to Aldershot.
Overseeing this major scheme is developer
Grainger PLC, which is acting on behalf of the
Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) –
part of the Ministry of Defence.
Phase one has been sold to Bellway Homes,
with the first of the new homes expected to
be completed in early summer 2015.
Alan Chitson, development manager at
Grainger, said: “We are keen to ensure
we develop a thriving new community at
Wellesley, with well-planned new homes,
two new schools, green open spaces and
other amenities. The development will
also bring long term economic benefits to
the local area. We are very pleased Bellway
Homes have completed the first land sale.
They shared our vision for the site and have
a good record in building high quality new
homes.’’
The new homes will range from onebedroom
flats right up to five bedroom
houses. Over a third of the new properties
will be affordable homes.
You can keep up to date with the Wellesley
development by going to
ASPIRE UPDATE
JRSLA CONVERSION
In line with the Army Basing Plan, the JRSLA accommodation blocks
have been converted from 36 to 40 single en-suite bedrooms in a
nine month programme which ran from June 2014 until February
2015.
The additional four rooms have been found by converting the 2nd and
3rd floor common rooms into bedrooms. The remaining common
rooms on the ground floor have been knocked through to create one
large room in each building.
Each building took approximately ten weeks to modify, and during the
works the soldiers remained in the buildings. The work was carried
out by Rydons, who had to carefully plan the works to minimise the
impact on the occupants.
Rushmoor in Bloom
Aspire Defence Services Ltd will sponser and participate in Rushmoor
in Bloom again this year. Within the Garrison the garden at Ordnance
is being planned, and Gavin Jones Landscaping Services are busy
getting ready for the Spring.
BFBS Radio
Aspire Defence have a monthly radio slot with Richard Wyeth from
BFBS Radio, which goes out on the Breakfast Show, at 0910 on the 2nd
Monday of every month . This gives an insight into current work, and
what is planned.
Building works
An extensive program of maintenance and repair work this year will include:
• Royal Garrison Church – emergency repairs to the heating which
will involve taking up the flooring to the main aisle followed by
redecorations, completed by the end of March.
• Refurbishment of Garrets Club in March.
• Quetta Park Community Centre redecorations taking place in March.
• Queen Marys Nursery Pre-Schools- new external fencing scheduled
for early April.
Bourley
Fly Fishing Club
Bourley Fly Fishing Club is situated
near Tweseldown and consists of
two well stocked fishing lakes over
a seven acre site. Membership
is open to all serving personnel
and veterans of the Armed Forces and
their dependents and civilians, although
membership preference is given to current
servicemen and veterans. As an Army
run club the ratio of serving and reserve
members and veterans must exceed that of
civilian members.
The lakes are adequately stocked with Rainbow
Trout and some Brown with the occasional
Blue Trout, several times a year and great
efforts are taken to ensure adequate stocks and
good lake management is maintained to ensure
members are able to enjoy good days fishing all
through the season.
Membership fees are extremely affordable and
special discounts can be given to service personnel
joining mid-season which will especially benefit
those returning from operational tours or postings.
During the year the committee are able to
offer the facilities to other groups who wish
to take part in activities, most notably the
Annual Gurkha Fly Fishing Competition and
the fishing activity side of the Royal Army
Dental Corps as part of their ‘Blast and Cast’
day.
Many of the Bourley members volunteer
their time during the ‘Blast and Cast’ day to
provide fishing equipment, experience and
their mentoring skills to offer members of the
dental corps an opportunity to try their hand
The winners and participants of the 2014 Gurkha Fly Fishing
Competition held at Bourley Lakes on 28th of May 2014.
fish are able to take it home with them.
The Bourley Fly Fishing Club is there for
servicemen and women to enjoy so if you
drop-in drop sessions, family events and a PGL break away for
the junior children (aged 7-13 years). For the latest information
of these events and activities, please visit Aldershot Garrison
HIVE Blog at www.aldershothive.blogspot.co.uk.
Our intention is also to provide a babysitting course based at
Maurice Toye House Community Centre during the May half
term (26-29 May 15). This will be open to boys and girls (14
years and over) at no cost to the individual. This can be used
as a skill section for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The Summer Programme (20 Jul-28 Aug 15) will include
family trips, drop-in sessions, activity days and courses. There
will also be a 5-day (residential) for the senior children (13-17
years) at a PGL site.
For further information on what’s on and how to book please
contact the AWS Admin office on 01252 349920.
Rushmoor parkrun is a weekly free 5km timed run. It
is open to anyone aged 4 and above and to all abilities.
If you are under 11 you will need to be accompanied
by an adult at all times. We currently have around 100
runners a week.
All you need to do to participate is sign up on the
parkrun website at www.parkrun.org.uk/register
and print off a barcode. This is scanned at the end of
your run and you get a finish token with your time.
Afterwards you can join us for coffee and a chat at Grays
Coffee on Lynchford Road.
parkrun is a nationwide event, with over 200 groups
running and more abroad. Once you have your barcode
you can join any of these groups for a run. parkrun is all
about building a community spirit and getting people to
enjoy running, whether with friends, or by yourself. It does
not matter if you have never run before as it’s not a race.
We already have a number of Army families participating,
but we would love to have more, so why not come along
and join us? You can find more details at our website
A Turner and Sons are a multi-award winning Butchers who
have been serving the military in Aldershot since 1956.
The shop was opened from the family home in North Lane by Alf
Turner who served in the RASC, and was awarded the BEM for
services to the Meat industry.
As our shop is in Aldershot, the home of the British Army, we
are extremely proud to support our Armed Forces and the local
community, we also have a great partnership with the Help For Heroes
charity and to date have raised over £60,000 for the support of our
injured troops.
We stock a wide range of locally sourced meats that are prepared on
site by our friendly and knowledgeable staff.
We look forward to welcoming you into the shop and hope you enjoy
one of our favourite recipes.
A Turner and Sons Recipe
Dragons Fury Tarte Tatin – makes one tarte
Ingredients:
1 Alf Turner Ring Of Fire
1 spring onion
1 clove of garlic
3 button shallots or half a small white onion
Lemon wedges
Dusting of plain flour
Tbsp olive oil
3 cherry tomatoes
5grm fresh ginger
Puff pastry
Sprigs of coriander
Salad/vegetable garnish to serve
Build Up and Prep
Peel and wash the salad/vegetable garnish
Use a small frying pan approximately 8 inch diameter or double the recipe to
make a bigger tarte and serve two portions. Make sure it is suitable to go in the
oven.
The Cooking
Add Ring of Fire to a heated frying pan with olive oil, turning halfway through
cooking.
Cook until lightly coloured, adding garlic, ginger, onion and spring onion.
Once ingredients have caramelised, add cherry tomatoes halves, fresh coriander
and squeeze with lemon.
Roll out puff pastry and top the pan with a thick pastry lid.
Bake for 25 minutes at 165 degrees/ gas mark 3 until the puff pastry lid is
golden brown.
Rest for one minute and turn out onto your serving plate.
Served Up
Great spicy lunch or late supper, serve with a simple minted yogurt dressing.
The tarte can be made in advance and heated through a moderate oven for
5-8 minutes.
Tips
Be generous with your pastry lid and ensure it sticks up the sides to give you
extra crunchy textures.
Add a little sugar if you require extra sweetness and sticky onions.
Never worry about waste as the tarte freezes fab!
RUSHMOOR NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM
by Chief Inspector Annabel Berry
The Garrison represents a very special
community in Rushmoor and it is really
important that you are aware of our local
civilian police services. Rushmoor is the name of our
council borough and my Rushmoor Neighbourhood
Policing Team is responsible for delivering policing
to our two towns of Aldershot and Farnborough.
I lead a team of officers including an Inspector, three sergeants, 14 police
constables and 16 police community support officers.
Hampshire Constabulary is currently going through significant
organisational change due to budgetary cuts. Aldershot Police Station
is one of our many buildings which will be de-commissioned during
2015/16 but it currently offers a front office counter service between
Monday to Saturday 8.00am-8.00pm and Sunday 9.00am-5.00pm.
We do recognise that a personal visit may not be to everyone’s taste and
we therefore offer the following alternatives:
• Dialling 101 to report non-urgent matters and seek advice (calls
charged at local rate)
• Dialling 999 for emergencies (crime or incident is in progress, life is
threatened or when an offender is still present)
• Visiting our website at www.hampshire.police.uk to access our ‘Do
It Online’ section to report crime or make non-urgent enquiries
• Emailing my team at rushmoor.police@hampshire.pnn.police.uk
to discuss your local concerns or be involved in identifying what is
important to policing the communities of Rushmoor
• By ‘liking’ our Hampshire Constabulary Facebook page.
• Following us on Twitter @FarnboroughCops and @AldershotPolice.
As with all communities there
are many things that you
can do to help us help you.
These vary from a personal
commitment to become a
police volunteer, to registering
for crime information so that
you can help us keep your
home and loved ones safe
• To register to become
a Police Volunteer (for
leadership, maintenance,
Twilight Runway
Challenge
Saturday 20 June, 2015
On the evening of Saturday 20 June 2015, the
Community Matters Partnership Project will be holding
our annual Twilight Runway Challenge and would like
to invite our military friends and families to join us in
running, walking, skating, skateboarding or cycling around TAG
Farnborough Airport’s runway and taxi ways. There will be a fun
warm up session, before we set off, on a beautiful sunny evening
(I have booked the weather especially) to complete your chosen
distance of 3k, 5k, 10k (or 20K for cyclists only). Aldershot
Garrison HQ are one of our most pro-active Partners and we
really want to encourage as many families to participate in this
event – why not have the kids cycle along next to you whilst you
go for your personal best running time?
The Twilight Runway Challenge is a unique event, taking place on the
airstrip, after the airport’s operations have ceased for the day. This will
be the fourth annual challenge, organised jointly by TAG Farnborough
Airport and The Sixth Form College Farnborough in support of
projects that will help to raise aspirations of young people in Rushmoor
and encourage progression. If you are interested in taking part or
would like to know more about the work of the Partnership, please
visit our website: www.communitymatterspartnership.org.uk.
Defuse the danger
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) is calling for
residents to make basic visual checks in their homes to ensure
their family’s safety.
Electricity causes more than 20,000 fires a year – almost half of all
accidental UK house fires. Many are caused by faulty appliances or
overheating.
• Unplug electrical appliances and chargers when you are
not using them and when you go to bed (unless they are
designed to be left on e.g. freezers)
• Keep appliances clean and in good working order eg
regularly remove lint from tumble dryer filters, and keep
ovens, grills and hobs free from grease and grime
• Always buy electrical chargers from a reputable source.
Electricity is a big part of our lives. We use it from the moment we
wake up and throughout the day. As a result, we sometimes forget
how powerful and dangerous it can be. However, there are several
basic checks which families can do to make sure their family’s stay safe
at home:
• Look out for signs of dangerous or loose wiring e.g. scorch marks,
hot plugs/sockets
• Don’t overload plug sockets – keep to one plug per socket
• Make sure any electrical appliances you buy have a British or
European safety mark
Group Manager Martin Walters said: “Electricity is such an
essential part of all of our lives – from heating and lights to
entertainment systems. Half of all accidental fires start from
faulty or misused electrical equipment so it is essential to be
sure that your electrics are in good working order and are used
properly.
“Electrical fires can have devastating effects but you can reduce
the risk of one starting in your home by following our safety
advice. It is also essential to make sure you fit smoke alarms to
every level of your home and check the batteries every week.”

Thoughts from the Padre
The one certain thing about life in
the Army is its uncertainty. We are
posted regularly which for most
means moving the family and making
new friends. Within each posting there
are deployments, exercises, trawls for
augmentees, often at short notice and
the Army Readiness Order is all about
being prepared for anything. For many
this is an exiting challenge but for others,
particularly families, it can be unsettling.
Factor in some of the wider challenges
that are facing society at the moment such
as redundancy, cuts in funding or elections.
It is hardly surprising that many people feel
insecure at what the future might bring.
These factors remind us that very little
is constant in life and we live in an ever
changing world where not just people
and places change, but also our attitudes,
opinions, beliefs and convictions. These
also alter as they are challenged, shaken,
or even undermined because of events
and experiences, leaving us unable to hold
on to much or knowing what or who to
believe in.
That is why we need our still points in
the turning world that can root us into
something solid and unchanging and there
can be many things that help us with this.
This time of year, nature itself comes
in to new life as we leave the darkness
and cold of winter and thus roots us into
the seasons. I remember how pleased I
was, when deployed in Iraq in a remote
location; I managed to find The Archers on
my radio. I was able to catch up on what
was going on in Ambridge and to hear the
characters that I had grown up with and, at
least for a while, was taken away from the
unsettling world of operations in to one of
my still points.
The same is true of faith. The prophet
Malachi writes in the Old Testament ‘I, The
Lord, do not change’ (3:6). These words
would have meant a lot to the nation
of Israel whose early years had led to
occupation and exile in foreign lands and
oppression and injustice. They desperately
needed to know what was important and
who could be relied upon when so many
other things were changing. But it is a
message that can also speak to us today in
times of flux and uncertainty. God’s love
never changes but it is our responsibility
by Rev’d John Vincent CF
to create a space to allow his love to affect
our lives.
There are many ways we can create that
space. Our Garrison has some beautiful
churches and temples which are set aside as
places of peace and prayer and are available
to all. I would encourage anyone who has
not visited to call in and enjoy some of that
calming space. But there are many other
ways, like a commuter I once saw on a
busy London train with his head buried in
his prayer book. Here was a man who was
well practiced in creating a space for God
even in the most chaotic of environments!
However busy our lives may seem, or
whatever changes we have to face, we all
have that still point and it is in that stillness,
we can discern the unchanging love of
God.
Breathe through the heats of our desire,
Thy coolness and thy Balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of Calm
(John Whittier 1807-92)
