Seize the Power<br />
<strong>of</strong> Language<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts (Applied Linguistics) programme provides<br />
a broad-based course <strong>of</strong> study in the field <strong>of</strong> applied<br />
linguistics, mainly within the fields <strong>of</strong> language education<br />
and discourse studies, balancing theoretical knowledge with<br />
practical application. It is designed primarily for English<br />
language teaching pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who wish to strengthen their<br />
academic qualifications for career advancement, but it is<br />
also suitable for people with a keen interest in languagerelated<br />
issues.<br />
This programme helps you to develop a strong foundation in<br />
theories <strong>of</strong> linguistics and language learning by providing<br />
you with opportunities to critically review current research<br />
in applied linguistics. You will also acquire skills for<br />
conducting language pedagogy research and examining<br />
language-related issues in various contexts, skills which will<br />
undoubtedly contribute towards your overall pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
development as language educators and researchers.<br />
Through this programme, you will be exposed to many new<br />
ideas and skills which you can apply to your specific<br />
educational context, and gain a better understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
various language-related issues and concerns in Singapore<br />
and around the world. As a result, you will be in a stronger<br />
position to appreciate and harness the power <strong>of</strong> language in<br />
your pr<strong>of</strong>essional and everyday lives.<br />
The programme has one required research methodology<br />
course as well as required specialisation courses. In<br />
addition, there are elective courses from three strands,<br />
which cover:<br />
• Language <strong>Education</strong> Research<br />
This strand focuses on language education with a<br />
strong research orientation.<br />
• Language Studies<br />
The focus <strong>of</strong> this strand is on linguistic theory and its<br />
implications for language education.<br />
• Classroom Applications<br />
Courses in this strand address classroom practice<br />
and issues directly related to language teaching<br />
and assessment.<br />
Duration <strong>of</strong> Study<br />
You may complete the programme in 2 – 4 years on a<br />
part-time basis, or 1 – 2 years on a full-time basis.<br />
Structure<br />
The programme <strong>of</strong>fers two options. You may select<br />
to complete:<br />
• 8 courses plus a dissertation (Dissertation option), or<br />
• 10 courses (Coursework option)<br />
For the coursework option, you will take a special<br />
course entitled “Critical Inquiry” as one <strong>of</strong> the 10<br />
courses, designed to act as a capstone project for<br />
the programme.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
To help you gain maximum benefits from the programme,<br />
you should have a Bachelor's degree from a recognised<br />
university, either in English Language Studies, Linguistics<br />
or in a relevant field (with evidence <strong>of</strong> adequate<br />
knowledge in language studies) and at least one year<br />
<strong>of</strong> language teaching experience or other comparable<br />
qualifications and experience.<br />
International applicants whose first language is not<br />
English are required to submit an <strong>of</strong>ficial Test <strong>of</strong> English<br />
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English<br />
Language Testing System (IELTS) score. Test dates<br />
must be within the last 2 years before the date <strong>of</strong><br />
your application.<br />
Application<br />
Applications should be submitted online in July and<br />
December, respectively, for admission in January and<br />
August <strong>of</strong> the following year. Hard copies <strong>of</strong> all<br />
necessary supporting documents must be submitted<br />
within one week from the date <strong>of</strong> successful online<br />
submission.<br />
