Call to Worship 

L: This is the night that Christ 

gathered with his disciples in the 

upper room. 

P: This is the night when a meal 

with friends became a foretaste of 

the heavenly feast. 



L: This is the night that led to his 

arrest and crucifixion. 

P: This is the night that led to his 

death and burial. 



L: This is the night that Christ the 

Lamb of God gave himself into the 

hands of those who would kill him. 



P: On this night, Holy God, we join 

with those first disciples and the 

church of all times and places to 

share a meal with Christ as he 

makes his way to the cross.

We come as guest invited 

When Jesus bids us dine, 

His friends on earth united 

To share the bread and wine; 


The bread of life is broken, 

The wine is freely poured 

For us, in solemn token 

Of Christ our dying Lord. 


We eat and drink, receiving 

From Christ the grace 

we need, 

And in our hearts believing 

On him by faith we feed; 


With wonder and 

thanksgiving 

For love that knows no end, 

We find in Jesus living 

Our ever present friend. 


One bread is ours 

for sharing, 

One single fruitful vine, 

Our fellowship declaring 

renewed in bread and wine: 


Renewed, sustained, 

and given 

By token, sign, and word, 

The pledge and 

seal of heaven, 

The love of Christ our Lord. 


The Shadow of 

Incomprehension 


John 13:1ff 

Jesus knew that the time had 

come for him to leave this world. 

He wanted to share his last 

Passover meal together with his 12 

closest friends, the disciples. 

Jesus loved his friends and wanted 

to show them his love in a very 

caring way. 


John 13:1ff 

As the friends got ready for the 

meal, Jesus put water in a large 

bowl and knelt down on the floor. 

He wanted to wash the feet of 

each disciple. When it was Peter’s 

turn, Peter said to Jesus, “You 

will never wash my feet!” 


John 13:1ff 

Jesus replied, “Peter, you don’t 

understand what I am doing now, 

but you will later.” Peter loved 

Jesus so much he said, “Then 

don’t just wash my feet but my 

head and hands also!” Peter 

wanted to be as close to 

Jesus as possible. 


John 13:1ff 

Jesus said, “Anyone who has taken 

a bath is completely clean and 

doesn’t need to wash themselves, 

except for their feet. All of you 

are clean—all except one.” Jesus 

knew who would hand him over to 

his enemies. That is why he said, 

“Not all of you are clean.” 


The Shadow of Betrayal 


Matthew 26:20-25 

After Jesus had washed his 

disciples’ feet, he got up and 

returned to the table. During the 

meal Jesus said, “I tell you, one of 

you will betray me.” 



The disciples were very upset and 

each one said, “It’s not me you’re 

talking about, is it?” Jesus 

answered, “The one who dips his 

bread in the dish with me will 

betray me. 



The Son of Man will die as the 

Scriptures say, but how terrible 

for the one who betrays him! It 

would be better if that man had 

never been born!” Judas said, 

“Surely you don’t mean me?” 

Jesus gently replied, “Yes, Judas, 

you will betray me.” 


The Shadow of Desertion 



Jesus told the disciples, “Soon you 

will all leave me. The Scriptures 

say, ‘I will kill the shepherd, and 

the sheep will run away.’ But 

after I am killed, I will rise from 

death. Then I will go to Galilee. 



I will be there before you go 

there.” Peter felt bad, “Even if all 

the others leave you, I won’t!” 

he said. 



Jesus looked at his dear friend and 

said quietly, “Before the sun rises, 

you will pretend you don’t know 

me three times.” Peter said, 

“Jesus, I love you too much to 

ever do that to you!” And all the 

other disciples said 

the same thing. 


Communion 


Luke 22:14ff 

When the hour came, Jesus said to 

his friends, “I am glad to eat this 

meal with you. But soon I will 

have to leave you. Someday we 

will share a meal again. It will be 

on a great day when everyone 

joins together to praise God.”

Jesus picked up a loaf of bread. He 

blessed it and gave some to each 

of his friends saying, “Take this 

bread and eat it. This is my 

body.”

Then Jesus picked up a cup of wine. 

He gave thanks and said, “Drink 

this. It is my blood which I must 

give up so the sins of people may 

be forgiven. I will not eat this 

bread or drink this wine again 

until God’s kingdom comes.” 


All who trust Christ are 

welcome to come forward 

and dip a piece of bread in 

the cup. 

If you are unable to come 

forward, someone will 

come and serve you. 

Come share in the gifts of 

God for the people of God. 


The Shadow of Pride 


Luke 22:24-27 

At the table the disciples began to 

argue about which one of them 

was the most important. Jesus 

said to them, “The kings of the 

world rule over their people, and 

those who have authority over 

others want to be called ‘the 

great providers for the people.’

But you must not be like that. The 

one with the most authority 

among you should act as if he is 

the least important. The one who 

leads should be like one who 

serves. Who is more important: 

the one serving or the one sitting 

at the table being served?

Everyone thinks it’s the one being 

served, right? But I have been with 

you as the one who serves.” Then 

they sang a song and went out to 

the Mount of Olives. 


The Shadow of Grief 



Jesus led the disciples to a garden 

called Gethsemane. He said to 

them, “Sit here while I go over 

there and pray.” He took Peter, 

James, and John with him. Then 

he began to be very sad 

and troubled. 



He said to the three disciples, “My 

heart is so heavy with grief, I feel 

as if I’m dying. Wait here and stay 

awake with me.” 



Then Jesus went on a little farther 

away from them. He fell to the 

ground and prayed, “God, if it’s 

possible, please don’t let me 

suffer. But I will do what 

must be done.” 



Then Jesus went back to his 

followers and found them 

sleeping. He said to Peter, “Could 

you not stay awake with me for 

one hour? Wake up and pray for 

strength against temptation. Your 

spirit wants to do what is right, 

but your body is weak.” 


The Shadow of Violence 


Matthew 26:47ff 

While Jesus was still speaking, 

Judas arrived with a crowd of 

soldiers. They were carrying 

swords and clubs and had been 

sent to arrest Jesus. Judas 

whispered his plan to the soldiers. 

“I will kiss the one you want.” 



He went straight to Jesus and said, 

“Peace be with you, Teacher,” 

and kissed him. Jesus answered, 

“Be quick about it, friend.” 



The soldiers grabbed Jesus and 

arrested him. One of Jesus’ 

followers grabbed his sword and 

cut off the ear of the high priest’s 

slave. Jesus said to that follower, 

“Put your sword away. People who 

use swords will be killed 

with swords. 



Surely you know I could ask God for 

more than twelve armies of 

angels? But it must happen this 

way to show the truth of what the 

Scriptures say." Then all of Jesus’ 

followers left him and ran away.

The Shadow of Accusation 



The soldiers who arrested Jesus led 

him to the house of Caiaphas the 

high priest. The teachers of the 

law and other leaders were 

gathered there. 



Peter followed from a distance, as 

far as the yard of the high priest’s 

house. Peter went in and sat with 

the guards. He wanted to see 

what would happen to Jesus. 



The leaders tried to find something 

against Jesus so that they could 

kill him. They tried to find people 

to lie and say that Jesus had done 

wrong, but they could find no real 

reason to kill him. 



Then two people came and said, 

“This man said, ‘I can tear down 

God’s Temple and rebuild it in 

three days.’” 



The high priest said to Jesus, 

“Don’t you have anything to say 

about these charges against you?” 

But Jesus said nothing. The high 

priest said to Jesus, “You are now 

under oath. 



I command you by the power of the 

living God to tell us the truth. Are 

you the Messiah, the Son of God?” 



Jesus replied, “So you say. But I tell 

you, in the future you will see the 

Son of Man sitting at the right side 

of God and coming on the clouds 

of heaven.” 



The high priest tore his clothes 

saying, “This man has said things 

that insult God! We don’t need 

any more witnesses. 



You all heard his insulting words. 

What do you think?” 

They answered, “He is guilty and 

should die.” 


The Shadow of Denial 



While Peter was sitting outside in 

the yard, a servant girl came up 

and said, “You were with Jesus 

from Galilee.” But Peter told 

everyone there that this was not 

true. “I don’t know what you are 

talking about,” he said. 



He left the yard. At the gate 

another girl saw him and said to 

the people there, “This man was 

with Jesus of Nazareth.” 

Peter again pretended he didn’t 

know Jesus. He said, “I swear I 

don’t know the man!” 



A short time later those standing 

there came to Peter and said, “Of 

course you’re one of them. It’s 

clear from the way you talk.” He 

said, “I swear to God, I don’t 

know the man!” As soon as he said 

this, a rooster crowed. 



Then he remembered what Jesus 

had told him: “Before the rooster 

crows, you will say three times 

that you don’t know me.” Then 

Peter went outside and cried 

bitterly. 


The Shadow of Rejection 



Now Jesus stood before the 

governor; and the governor asked 

him, "Are you the King of the 

Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so." 

But when he was accused by the 

leaders of the people, Jesus did 

not answer. 



Then Pilate said to him, "Don’t you 

hear all these things they accuse 

you of?” But Jesus refused to 

answer a single word, and this 

really surprised the governor. 



Every year at Passover time the 

governor would release a prisoner, 

whoever the crowd wanted. At 

that time there was a very bad 

prisoner named Barabbas. Pilate 

asked the crowd, “Which one do 

you want me to free? Barabbas or 

Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 



The leaders had persuaded the 

crowds to ask for Barabbas. The 

governor again asked, “Which of 

the two do you want me to 

release? And they said, 

“Barabbas.” 



Pilate asked, “What should I do 

with Jesus who is called the 

Messiah?” They all replied, “Kill 

him on a cross!” 


“When I Survey the Wondrous 

Cross”

The Shadow of Mockery 



Then Pilate’s soldiers took Jesus 

into the governor’s palace. They 

took off Jesus’ clothes and put a 

red robe on him. They made a 

crown from thorny branches and 

put it on his head, and they put a 

stick in his right hand. 



Then they bowed before him, 

making fun of him. They said, “We 

salute you, king of the Jews!” 

They spat on him, and took his 

stick and kept hitting him on the 

head with it. 



After they finished making fun of 

him, the soldiers took off the robe 

and put his own clothes back on 

him. Then they led him away to 

be killed on a cross. 



As they went out, they came upon a 

man from Cyrene named Simon. 

They forced him to carry Jesus’ 

cross to Golgotha, which means 

“The Place of the Skull.” There 

the soldiers gave Jesus some wine 

mixed with bitter herbs, but after 

tasting it, he would not drink it. 



The soldiers nailed Jesus’ hands and 

feet to the cross. Then they threw 

dice to divide his clothes between 

them. The soldiers stayed there to 

guard him. They put a sign above 

his head with the charge against 

him, “This is Jesus, the King of 

the Jews.” 


The Shadow of Disbelief 



People walked by, shaking their 

heads and shouting insults at 

Jesus. “You said you could tear 

down the Temple and rebuild it in 

three days. Save yourself if you’re 

God’s Son! Come on down from 

the cross!” 



The leaders of the people also 

made fun of Jesus. “He saved 

others, but he cannot save 

himself! Isn’t he the king of Israel? 

He trusts in God—let’s see if God 

wants to save him.” The bandits 

on the crosses beside Jesus also 

insulted him. 


The Shadow of 

Abandonment 



At noon the whole country became 

dark for three hours. At about 

three o’clock Jesus shouted, "Eli, 

Eli, lema sabachthani?" which 

means, "My God, my God, why did 

you abandon me?” Someone 

nearby said, “He’s calling for 

Elijah.” 



Quickly, one of them ran and got a 

sponge. The sponge was soaked in 

sour wine, put on a stick, and 

given to Jesus to drink. Another 

one said, “Let’s see if Elijah will 

come and save him.” 


“Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross”

The Shadow of Death 


Matthew 27:50-51,54 

Then Jesus cried loudly and died. 

Right then the curtain of the 

temple was torn in two from top to 

bottom. The earth shook, and the 

rocks were split.

Now the army officer and the 

soldiers with him who saw all these 

things were very scared. They all 

said, “He really was the Son of 

God!” 



Joseph of Arimathea, a follower of 

Jesus, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. 

Joseph took the body and wrapped 

it in a clean linen cloth. He put 

Jesus’ body in a new tomb that he 

had dug in a wall of rock. 



He then rolled a large stone to close 

the tomb, and went away. Mary 

Magdalene and the other Mary 

were there, facing the tomb.
