PROJECTS
Agriculture
The agriculture project
will work to diversify the
economy by pursuing the
attraction of new agriculture
development in Timmins.
This project will build on
the work completed by the
Northeastern Community
Network (NeCN) in 2011 and
it will be focusing specifically
on the marketing and
attraction potential of new
agriculture investors to the
area.
Excellence & Innovation Task Force
During the Timmins 2020 community consultation process, residents
of Timmins rated a Centre of Excellence as one of the top business
ideas that the City should focus on. The TEDC is currently leading the
Excellence and Innovation Committee in order to establish an organization
to assist business owners with research, innovation, and productivity.
During this planning phase the Committee will be conducting an outreach
initiative to interview local businesses to determine their needs for
innovation and expansion.
The Committee is also taking the necessary steps to join the Northern
Technology Alliance (NTA), which is made up of innovation centres from
four other Northern Ontario cities. Being part of the NTA will provide
access to additional resources and expertise to assist with projects.
One initiative is to cultivate
consumer interest in
farmers’ markets in the
NeCN catchment area.
For more information on
this project, please visit
the Northeastern Ontario
Farmers Markets website.
SUCCESS STORIES
Discover Abitibi Initiative
Phase V of the Discover Abitibi Initiative concluded in March
2012. The project applied state-of-the-art technology and
methods of exploration to address the knowledge gaps in the
Western Abitibi Greenstone belt.
The initiative started in 2001 and oversaw the completion of 29
exploration related projects ranging from airborne surveying to
ground based geo-scientific investigations. It provided up-to-date
data that companies could use in their search from mineral wealth
in the northeast region of the province.
Throughout the project, $15 million of public funding and private
donations were invested in the region to provide mining and
exploration companies with additional data to help them find the
next big deposit.
Robert Calhoun led the Discover Abitibi Initiative. Robert not only
coordinated all of the research for this project, but he also kept
his thumb on the pulse of the mining community in Timmins. If
anyone had any questions about who was doing what, where,
and why they were doing it; Robert would know and would share
his knowledge. Robert moved on as the Discover Abitibi Initiative
concluded and his knowledge has been greatly missed.
Community
Gardens
The Timmins Community
Gardens is a community vitality
project that promotes a healthy
lifestyle and local food production.
The Timmins Community
Gardens is a volunteer project
with community partners and
community-minded volunteers.
Building on past successes of the
pilot project and expansion at the
Riverview location, the goal this
year was to build a site to service
the community in the East End.
The new site is located at
Northern College. The Rotary
Club of Timmins-Porcupine
generously donated resources
and labour to help make this
project a success. TD Friends
of the Environment and the
Covenant United Church also
donated funds to help make this
project a reality. There are 22
plots for gardeners to enjoy. If
you would like more information
this project, contact the TEDC
Testmark Laboratories Ltd.
Testmark Laboratories Ltd. held their grand opening on
Thursday, June 28, 2012 at their location at 100 Wilson Avenue,
Suite 102 (behind R & S Videos & Games facing Algonquin
Boulevard). Months prior to this, Testmark contacted the TEDC
to enlist our help in finding them a suitable location for their
expansion into the Timmins market. We provided them with a
list of available locations that met their criteria and the name of a
realtor who could narrow this list to their ideal location.
Once the location was found, Testmark had to let everyone know
that they were open for business in Timmins. The TEDC provided
them with local media and community contacts so that they could
publicize their grand opening.
Call them at (705) 531-1121 for more information on their
services.
Casino Attraction
On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, Timmins City Council approved a
resolution that stated: “the City of Timmins would like to have
the opportunity to be considered a zone for a casino location.”
Once this was announced, the TEDC immediately began to lobby
casino operators and the Province of Ontario to be included as a
zone for casino development.
This lobbying included participating at the Canadian Gaming
Summit (June 11-13) in Niagara Falls.
The TEDC also worked with one investor that is interested in
the Timmins marketplace. Letters on behalf of the TEDC, the
City of Timmins, and the Timmins Chamber of Commerce have
been sent to the Northern Caucus members, Ontario Lottery and
Gaming Corporation (OLG), the Minister and Deputy Minister of
Finance, and Premier McGuinty expressing their disappointment
that Timmins was excluded from the gaming zones. The TEDC,
City of Timmins, and Timmins Chamber of Commerce formally
responded to the OLG’s request for information on July 4, 2012.
Seeking CYBF Committee Members
The Business Enterprise Centre (BEC, which is part of the TEDC) currently administers the Canadian
Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) program. This program provides youth aged 18-34 with funding
(grants and loans) and a mentor in order to start/expand a business. In order for youth to obtain funding
from CYBF, their business plan must be reviewed by a committee. The BEC is currently recruiting
business owners to join the committee and help out in the review process. If you are a business
owner and would like to help young entrepreneurs in the community get started, please contact Ross
MacDonald for details on joining the CYBF committee.
“ The Canadian Youth Business Foundation
is a great program because it not only provides
start-up capital to young entrepreneurs,
it also provides them with a mentor
who is able to provide
practical advice through
their own business experiences.”
