7
It has long been understood that an unshielded lamp is the most efficacious manner in which to provide light, but it has for
decades been considered unacceptable. According to IESNA RP-20-98, "Reasonable shielding of lamps, reflectors, or lenses will enhance
the visibility and should be considered during the design process. Glare presents more of a problem for older persons, affecting their ability
to clearly perceive objects or obstructions." Kenall's TopDek has been specifically designed with a clear textured lens to create a uniformly
luminous surface while significantly reducing glare.
LED Drivers
Removed from thermal path and utilizes
two drivers for reduced heat load, increased
efficiency, and redundant power supply.
Clear Textured Diffuser
Textured surface helps break up the LED
imaging, creating a uniformly luminous
surface, which drastically reduces glare
while having minimal effect on the
photometric distribution.
Glare is often quantified using "luminance". Luminance is a photometric
measure of the luminous intensity per unit area of light travelling in a given
direction. It describes the amount of light that passes through a particular
area (luminous opening), and falls within a given solid angle. The metric unit
for luminance is candela per square meter (cd/m2).
The significant component of this definition is the "area", which does not
refer to the luminaire's overall dimensions but rather its luminous opening,
or the area that emits light from the luminaire. With LED luminaires, this area
is the surface area of the chip itself which causes intense glare. TopDek uses
the entire diffuser surface to maximize this area, thus minimizing glare.
TopDek Thermal Management
Kenall Lighting TopDek
Kenall's thermal management technology, essential to maximizing LED life and performance, utilizes an innovative marine-grade diecast
aluminum heatsink that conducts heat away from the mission critical LEDs through the top of the housing. This process is facilitated by
a series of fins that conduct heat outward from the core of the housing via convection heat transfer. Heat passes through the fins and is
released via the protective screen in the top of the housing, which also prevents debris from entering the luminaire. This intelligent design
enables the LEDs to maintain a 100,000-hour minimum lifetime even at 25°C (77°F) ambient (minimum 60,000-hour life at 40°C), making
it a strong, viable solution for demanding environmental conditions. Moreover, the concealed fins and diffusing textured lens provide a
desirable architectural styling atypical of most pole mounted LED luminaires.
Light Output Ratings
TopDek is available in three different engines with either 5700K, 5000K or 4000K color temperatures for a total of nine distinct configurations. These LEDs can be
driven at 350mA for maximum efficacy (lumens per watt), at 525mA or at 700mA for maximum output. The performance matrix below summarizes the output for
each of these configurations in “delivered lumens,” which is the preferred reporting method of the Department of Energy’s Lighting Facts program. Delivered lumens
measures the true light output leaving the luminaire after considering all of the thermal, optical and electrical losses that are present in every luminaire.
For comparative purposes, always demand ratings in delivered lumens.
Luminaire Effective Projected Area (EPA)
EPA Outdoor Wind Load Calculations
A fixture's Effective Projected Area (EPA) is equal to the area 'visible' by the wind at a particular angle. All poles have maximum weight and
EPA capacities that the luminaires mounted to them must not exceed. These capacities are based on the wind zone in which the luminaires
are located. Below is a list of fixture and mounting bracket EPA values for various TopDek configurations.
Wind Speed's Impact on Luminaire Selection
The wind loading map of the U.S. (pictured below) can be used to select the appropriate lighting fixtures and poles, based on EPA ratings,
for parking decks in specific geographic locations. The values on the map can be used to determine whether the configuration under
consideration will withstand the estimated average wind velocity of a particular region. The total wind load rating for the desired pole must
be greater than the total combined EPA of the luminaire(s).
TopDek & SmartSense Micro
For Integral Sensing at the Luminaire
Kenall Lighting TopDek
Kenall’s SmartSense Micro control system intelligently monitors both motion and daylight, providing flexible dimming capabilities when
the space is unoccupied and/or when sufficient ambient daylight levels are detected. Capable of zonal control, SmartSense Micro is autocommissioned
via a laser pointer, is fully operational within 24 hours, and provides an automatic indication when LED end-of-life (L70) has
been reached.
15
TopDek Individual Control
This LED-driven luminaire offers an optional SmartSense Micro
system, which switches the luminaire to full brightness upon
detecting motion in the space, and slowly dims back to low-level
standby mode once occupancy is no longer detected.
TopDek Zonal Control
Each SmartSense Micro luminaire is equipped with an integrated
sensor unit. To achieve zonal control, individual luminaires can be
linked together so that as one unit senses motion or daylight, all
linked luminaires are brought back to full brightness or dimmed with
each other.
Zonal control can also be achieved through the use of the SmartSense
Control System (see pg. 16), which enables a single occupancy sensor
to trigger the operation of a single luminaire or up to an entire deck
of luminaires.
Integral Sensor
The SmartSense Micro sensor serves as both a daylight sensing
photosensor and a passive infrared occupancy sensor with a
coverage pattern up to 60' in diameter from a 40' mounting height.
TopDek & SmartSense Control System
Sensing Occupancy and Daylight for Dramatic Energy Savings with Strategically Located Sensors
Kenall’s SmartSense control system utilizes an innovative design concept. The system intelligently monitors both motion and daylight from
strategically located sensors, providing flexible dimming and switching capabilities when the space is unoccupied and/or when ambient
daylight levels are detected. SmartSense’s ability to dim light levels in response to occupancy and daylight represents cost and energy saving
opportunities for the facility owner.
Sensor
The SmartSense sensor serves as both
a daylight sensing photosensor and a
passive infrared occupancy sensor that
can be strategically located to maximize
safety and energy savings.
Control Module
The SmartSense control module receives input from one
daylight sensor and up to six total occupancy sensors,
servicing up to 32 luminaires. It can also be linked with
additional control modules to control an unlimited number
of luminaires regardless of the number of sensors used.
TopDek Luminaire
This LED-driven luminaire, specifically designed for use
with the SmartSense control system, will quickly achieve
full brightness upon detecting motion in the space, and
will slowly dim back to low-level standby mode once
occupancy is no longer detected.
Dimming Control
For greater energy savings, the control module is capable of setting
the low-level standby of the luminaire as low as 20% light output
(80% dimmed).
Sensor Ports
Each control module has the capacity to accept six dual-technology
sensors-one of which provides daylight level input. Each bay has a
green LED indicating power to the sensor and a red LED indicating
occupancy.
L70 Indicator Light
The control system features an “end-of-life” indicator that turns red
when the TopDek luminaires reach L70, which is 70% of the initial
lumen output.
24-Hr. Self-Commissioning Button
This feature automatically commissions the control system with the
touch of a button. The control module measures the light levels
during a 24-hour cycle and eliminates the need for expensive field
commissioning.
Interconnection
Interconnect multiple control modules to expand the number
of luminaires in a zone. Each control module can operate up
to 32 luminaires.
SmartSense Control System Layout
System Analysis and Operational Benefits
Kenall Lighting TopDek
The Kenall SmartSense Control System provides intelligent parking deck and surface lot automation without the typical expense of more
traditional control systems. Luminaires will remain in low level standby mode until occupants pass by a sensor located at the vehicular or
pedestrian entry point. Kenall recommends that dimmed light levels meet IES recommendations. The system will immediately raise levels to
the maximum light output of the luminaires when occupants enter the parking deck or surface lot and will remain at those levels until the
system time-out period has elapsed (adjustable from 30 seconds to 30 minutes).
17
Sensors
Sensors are dual capability devices with the ability
to detect and adjust to occupancy and daylighting.
The sensors must be located in a covered area, and
the standard sensor range is 40' diameter from a 20'
mounting height or 60' diameter from a 40' height
(other lens options are available).
Note: In this layout, the sensor is positioned on the
ramp ceiling leading up to the top of the deck.
Control Module
The main operational control device receives input
from occupancy/daylight sensors and actuates the
luminaires within the zone based on sensor input.
The system also allows multiple control modules to be
interconnected.
TopDek Luminaires
Multiple units can be switched and dimmed
simultaneously. The luminaires are controls-ready,
requiring no additional equipment for connection to
the control module and sensors.
This sensor is located on
the ramp ceiling leading up
to the top of the deck.
Configurations can be designed where
a single occupancy sensor triggers the
operation of either a single luminaire to an
entire deck of luminaires. When daylight
contribution is present, the system will
continuously dim the luminaires to maintain
desired light levels. Sensors can supply
daylight and occupancy information to a
single zone or multiple zones as required.
The sensors and control modules must
be positioned in a covered location at all
points of vehicular and pedestrian egress.
