Fifteen Economics Students from <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Service Learning Program<br />
brought their academic experiences into the classroom at<br />
the Highland Elementary School in Danvers teaching<br />
basic economics to the children there using the Junior<br />
Achievement program.<br />
Quote from Cate, “These students are engaged in<br />
service-learning as a part of their Economics class with<br />
Professor Moonsu Han... Students participated as teachers<br />
of the Junior Achievement program to serve in their<br />
community as well as enhance their experience in their<br />
Economics course.” Cate is the Service-Learning<br />
Coordinator for <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
About Junior Achievement<br />
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest in- and<br />
after-school practical business education program. JA<br />
has a proven long-term impact on youth giving them a<br />
stake in the free-enterprise system to create a better<br />
workforce for tomorrow. This year 1,000 business volunteers<br />
will use JA developed curriculum to educate<br />
40,000 K-12 students in Eastern Massachusetts, with a<br />
focus on reaching disadvantaged youth. The $900 per<br />
program cost is covered by donors and friends, making<br />
the program free for students, schools and organizations<br />

NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRIO STUDENTS CELEBRATE<br />
“READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY” WITH BRICKET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> TRiO student David Lopez answers questions about college<br />
life to Bricket Elementary students after reading a story to them.<br />
Twenty-three service-learning students from <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s TRIO program<br />
celebrate reading with students at Bricket Elementary School in Lynn, Massachusetts on Monday, March<br />
23, 2009, Although Read Across America Day was March 2 nd , a snow storm caused the delay to March<br />
23 rd . The students from NSCC read stories, engaged the school children in discussion, surrounding a<br />
series of positive character traits and encouraged the students to have goals including college. At the<br />
end of the day, on behalf of the TRiP program, Director, Sally Cohen presented the books that were<br />
read as a gift to the school.<br />
The NSCC students were there as part of the Trio program. The purpose of TRiO Student<br />
Support Services is to provide students with the skills to become successful, motivated learners, and<br />
ultimately, knowledgeable professionals. To be eligible for this program, students must meet one of the<br />
following criteria: first-generation college student, low-income, and/or disability.<br />
The students were also taking part in service-learning class at the college. Service-Learning is<br />
a teaching and learning methods that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic<br />
learning. Service-learning enhances what is taught in college by extending students learning beyond<br />
the classroom and providing opportunities for students to use their emerging and acquired skills and<br />
knowledge to meet real needs in the community. Over 50 faculty members teach service-learning courses<br />
on campus involving over 300 students annually in service-learning at NSCC.<br />
NSCC Student Literary/Art Magazine” SPARK” Launches<br />
Spark is a Literary & Artistic Review that is a work comprised of<br />
both student literary and artistic submissions. This publication is an<br />
opportunity for <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>’ s skilled and talented<br />
writers and artists, to showcase their work utilizing an interesting and<br />
visually dynamic format.<br />
This was a competitive<br />
process. A large number of<br />
wonderful submissions were<br />
received and it was challenging<br />
to narrow the selection<br />
down, but space was limited.<br />
Each submission was blindly<br />
reviewed by a combined<br />
committee of 3-5 students<br />
and faculty. Once submissions<br />
were scored, those<br />
submissions with the highest<br />
scores were selected for<br />
publication.<br />
The final product, a<br />
collection of our very own<br />
talented NSCC students, is<br />
on campus now! Please keep<br />
