Thanks to the wine-making skill and dedication of the vintners of Monti, over the years the land became dotted
dotted with many small vineyards. And, in July 1956, 22 farsighted winemakers, in order to guarantee
correct processing of harvested grapes created the Cantina Sociale del Vermentino whose name pays
tribute to the noblest of Gallura grapes. The Winery has today 350 members who cultivate vineyards
in the territories of Monti, Telti, Olbia, Loiri and Porto San Paolo, for a total of 500 hectares, delivering
selected grapes yielding elegant, stylish and original wines.
The Winery, immersed in three hectares of oak woods is where the entire production cycle unfolds, from
delicate crushing and stemming down to storage of the wine in controlled temperature cellars.
The Aragonese-style entrance to the barrel cellar, also providing the logo and symbol of the Winery, made in
granite, welcomes visitors wishing to learn about the development of our premium wines - in casks or tonneaux
with capacities ranging between 2500 and 500 litres - and their maturation in the bottle.
The territory of Mamoiada and in particular the soils of the vineyards are primarily composed of decayed
granite (as result of corrosion processes) with small amounts of clay and humus.
the wine production is based on the cultivation of 15 hectares of vineyards trained by the alberello-system.
The biggest part of the vineyards are cultivated with Cannonau and only a small amount approx 5% of the
vineyard surface, is cultivated with a white grape variety which we call “Granazza”. Our wine is cultivated
in two different areas of Mamoiada, Muruzzone and Garanunele, both 600m above sea level.
One third of the whole cultivation area is covered with more than 50- year-old plants, one vineyard in
particular is over 100 years old. The vineyards are ploughed twice a year, the hillside ones are still
traditionally ploughed by an oxen span and by manual hoeing.
The Villa Trasqua Estate extends over 120 hectares of land, of which 50 are set aside for the production of
Chianti Classico and IGT appellation wines. Ten hectares, with over 3000 trees, are set aside for the extra
virgin olive oil production; the rest is woods and arable land. The vineyards are planted on south-facing
tablelands, giving optimal sunlight and also insulation.
First planted in 1965, Villa Trasqua is now owned by Hans Hulsbergen, a Dutchman with a great passion for
wine who bought it in 2001. The winemaker, Swiss oenologist Andreas Stössel has over 20 years of
experience in Tuscany. He was running Valtellina in Radda before moving to Villa Trasqua.
The grape varieties used for the production of Chianti Classico are Sangiovese; for the Trasgaia IGT
(Supertuscan) the grapes are Sangiovese and Cabernet-Sauvignon. The Trasgaia, an elegant, austere wine
aged 24 months in French oak barriques, has consistently been awarded 2 Bicchieri in Italy‟s wine
companion, the Gambero Rosso guide. The Traluna - 95% Sangiovese and 5% Alicante Bouschet - is a
lightly wooded, fruit driven, easy drinking wine.
The estate of Fondo Antico is found on the western edge of Sicilia, just a short trip north from Marsala. This
old property of the Polizzoti-Scuderi family has long nourished indigenous varietals such as Nero d‟Avola,
Grillo, and Inzolia. Today these vines are also joined by the international Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot,
and Chardonnay, making a total of 90 hectares of vineyards.
Every step of their production is designed around the belief that “la qualita del vino nasce gia nella vigna” –
the quality of wine is born already in the vineyard.
Grape harvest is performed in our family’s cellars equipped with the most innovative technologies. It is
performed with passion, experience and skill, submitted to meticulous controls through each phase of the
production. Thus the great wines of Fondo Antico are born, bringing with them harmony of colours and nose,
Epsilon Wines are made in a new winery built at the Northern end of the property, overlooking the vineyard
that gently slopes down towards the Greenock Creek. Wine making operations are carried out by Julie and
Aaron Southern. We have spent a long time in establishing and reworking our vineyard, so the wines have
to be true to their vineyard origins. The advantage of growing your own grapes is that all vineyard operations
are undertaken with a view towards wine quality. The grapes are grown using organic principles and are
intentionally cropped low to produce fruit with rich fruit flavours and balanced acid and tannin levels.
Sometimes a single vineyard can present challenges in producing interesting wines year in, year out.
Working closely together over the vintage period, the grape intake off the property occurs over a four to six
week period, depending on soil type, micro climate and desired ripeness levels to obtain complexity in the
final blend. Wine making is traditional and is intentionally hands off as to have as little an impact on the
finished wine as possible. Open vat fermentation in small batches, with pumping over two times per day
followed by gentle basket pressing and small French oak barrel ageing is undertaken for all the red wines.
Each vineyard parcel is kept separate until final blending, as each wine ages in its own way and gives many
options when completing the final blend . Aaron Southern, Winemaker
The Fat Sparrow Shiraz has been made from premium fruit from Greenock on the north western slopes of the
Barossa Valley. Greenock, with its ancient soils - perfect blends of brown sandy loams over deep red clay
bases, hot summer days, and rolling hills which catch the cool evening breezes makes it perfect Shiraz
terroir. Deep purple in colour, richly flavoured yet elegant, this Shiraz has a lovely nose which leads to soft
palate of dark cherry and subtle tannins.
The Fat Sparrow Sangiovese is made from high quality Heathcote fruit. The Heathcote region - with its famed
Cambrian soils formed by volcanic activity 500,000 million years ago which are rich in minerals and have
excellent water-holding capacity - while famous for Shiraz, is now also producing other European varieties of
high note – including Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Nebbiolo.
While Sangiovese better known for its earthy than fruity notes, the Fat Sparrow Sangiovese displays both
savoury and fruity red cherry characteristics, mixed with subtle spice. It has a good weight and richness of
palate, with plenty of fruit and flavour.
Where it all began
Mike Fitzpatrick‟s diverse working life began on Squitchy Lane in Oxford, UK. It was here that he lived, while
studying at Oxford University – and here that he first tasted extraordinary wines from some of Europe‟s‟ finest
single vineyards.
Mike returned to Australia and after his term as premiership captain for Carlton Football Club, began building
his financial businesses, while taking every opportunity to learn more about single vineyard wines.
The Yarra Valley
After meeting John Middleton and tasting his extraordinary Mount Mary wines, Mike decided on the Yarra
Valley as his preferred region – given it can produce world class Pinot Noir, Cabernets, Chardonnay and
Sauvignon Blanc.
Mike found his ideal site in 1996 - a vineyard planted in 1982, just around the corner from Coldstream Hills
and Yarra Yering. Over the last three years, Mike has assembled a team of professionals – led by manager
Ron Winzer and winemaker Robert Paul - to grow, make and market his own single vineyard wines.
Marlborough’s first and oldest vineyard
Marlborough is now the largest wine region of New Zealand and has become a world-renowned producer
of premium wines in a relatively short time.
Hidden in the heart of this youthful Marlborough grape country, there is a small wine cellar, set in the side
of a hill. Nothing unusual in that you may think. There are now a few cellars around the province.
However this cellar has something no other does.
With four massive gum trees standing sentinel, the rammed earth cellar, with dirt floor and Manuka
log roof, is an impressive reminder that winemaking in Marlborough does in fact have a proud past.
This cellar was the first of its kind to be built in Marlborough in 1873. It was another 100 years before the
first of the new era vines where planted in the region.
