Gautrain’s distinctive<br />

golden colour, the<br />

first four-car train set<br />

was proudly handed<br />

over to the Gauteng<br />

Provincial Government<br />

at Bombardier’s Derby<br />

assembly plant in the<br />

United Kingdom.<br />

01 DECEMBER<br />

The first shipment <strong>of</strong> two<br />

completed rail cars arrived<br />

in Durban. After carefully<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-loading each rail car,<br />

which measures 21 metres<br />

in length and weighs 46<br />

tonnes, they were transported<br />

as an abnormal load by<br />

road from Durban Harbour<br />

to Gautrain’s train depot in<br />

Midrand.<br />

Operations Function<br />

The Gautrain celebrated its<br />

commencement <strong>of</strong> operations<br />

on 5 June 2010. It included<br />

an inaugural ride on Africa’s<br />

first rapid rail transport system<br />

and the cutting <strong>of</strong> ribbons at<br />

Sandton, Marlboro, Rhodesfield<br />

and OR Tambo International<br />

Airport stations. This historic<br />

moment celebrated the dawn <strong>of</strong><br />

a new legacy in public transport<br />

for South Africa. Phambili,<br />

During the first hour that<br />

Gautrain commence<br />

operations, nearly<br />

1 000 passengers used<br />

the service between<br />

Sandton and the OR<br />

Tambo International<br />

Airport. The first train<br />

departed at 5:30am.<br />

07 JUNE<br />

The remaining section<br />

from Rosebank south<br />

to Johannesburg Park<br />

Station opened.<br />

The route from Rosebank<br />

to Pretoria and Hatfield<br />

commenced operations.
