project milestones 2007 13 DECEMBER 2008 08 JULY 2007 04 FEBRUARY The implosion of four buildings which made way for the Gautrain Park Station Precinct took place. 2008 28 SEPTEMBER First tunnel break through signifying the meeting of Gautrain’s two twin-track tunnels which were excavated simultaneously towards each other from Mushroom Farm Park and from Marlboro Portal. Launch of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at Rosebank Station and its naming ceremony. It was named Imbokodo in celebration of the role all women played in making South Africa a democratic society. 2008 OCTOBER First fully assembled train car left Derby in the United Kingdom. 2009 31 MARCH First train car assembled in South Africa arrived in Midrand from Nigel, Gauteng. Custom branded in Gautrain’s distinctive golden colour, the first four-car train set was proudly handed over to the Gauteng Provincial Government at Bombardier’s Derby assembly plant in the United Kingdom. 2008 01 DECEMBER The first shipment of two completed rail cars arrived in Durban. After carefully off-loading each rail car, which measures 21 metres in length and weighs 46 tonnes, they were transported as an abnormal load by road from Durban Harbour to Gautrain’s train depot in Midrand. 2009 29 MAY All trains to be ready for Operation Commencement Date I are in Midrand, Gauteng. 2009 30 JANUARY Gautrain’s Tunnel Boring Machine, Imbokodo, completed its last meter for the project before being powered down at the end of January. 2009 11 SEPTEMBER Excavation of Gautrain’s 15km tunnel is complete. This major milestone was achieved when construction teams detonated the final blast near Emergency Access Shaft 2, in The Wilds in Johannesburg. 2009 03 FEBRUARY Guests gathered at the Gautrain depot in Midrand for the official welcome ceremony celebrating the first completed train set to it’s operational home. 2010 5 JUNE Commencement of Operations Function The Gautrain celebrated its commencement of operations on 5 June 2010. It included an inaugural ride on Africa’s first rapid rail transport system and the cutting of ribbons at Sandton, Marlboro, Rhodesfield and OR Tambo International Airport stations. This historic moment celebrated the dawn of a new legacy in public transport for South Africa. Phambili, Gautrain, Phambili! 2010 08 JUNE 2011 02 AUGUST During the first hour that Gautrain commence operations, nearly 1 000 passengers used the service between Sandton and the OR Tambo International Airport. The first train departed at 5:30am. 2012 07 JUNE The remaining section from Rosebank south to Johannesburg Park Station opened. The route from Rosebank to Pretoria and Hatfield commenced operations.
keeping the vision alive PROJECT OBJECTIVES The Gautrain Project illustrates Gauteng Government’s commitment in promoting public transport. It also strives to support the priorities of the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) which are, amongst others: • Accelerated economic growth, development and infrastructure delivery, with emphasis on job creation • Quality service delivery • Good governance • Small and Medium Enterprise development • New Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment • Promotion of business tourism HATFIELD PRETORIA CENTURION LEGEND North-South Commuter East-West Commuter Airport PRASA / Metrorail OPERATIONAL INTEGRATION NODES Gautrain Stations (10) North-South Commuter (8) East-West Commuter (3) Airport Commuter (3) With the implementation of the Gautrain Project the GPG also endeavours to improve public transport and land use co-ordination and the integration of the different modes of transport. The image of public transport will also be improved with the Gautrain. Other objectives of this project include the: • Strengthening of existing development nodes in Gauteng • Urban restructuring and redevelopment • Revitalisation of the Johannesburg and Pretoria central business districts • Improvement of accessibility and mobility in the Johannesburg to Pretoria corridor MARLBORO SANDTON MIDRAND RHODESFIELD O.R.
