*Excerpt from 100
Years of Greatness in
Pope County by Hart
Armstrong, 1966.
>
A look at the map of Pope County shows at least
50 good sized lakes – some quite large, like Reno,
Amelia, Emily, Linka, Swenoda, Westport, Grove, Simon,
Pelican and Minnewaska (which is listed at the
13th largest in the state). This is the heart of Minnesota’s
vacationland and here visitors will
find all the recreation their
heart may desire, winter or
summer.
It is estimated that
each summer the population
of Pope County more
than doubles with the influx
of recreation-minded visitors
and tourists. On Waterama
weekend (the last full weekend of
July) the proportion is even higher.
In the mid 1960s there were
not less than 24 lakeside resorts
in the Glenwood area. At these
resorts a visitor had every need and
pleasure fulfilled – lodging, food, often restaurant
service, boats, motors, bait, supplies, fishing, water skiing,
swimming, hiking, golfing and loafing.
The fun continues even after the water freezes over.
On Lake Minnewaska close to 1,000 ice fishing houses
are dragged out upon the ice and used for fishing through
holes in the ice. Some of these are ultra luxurious:
Wall-to-wall carpeting, automatic heating,
electricity, radio and TV. Those who have tried
ice fishing are invariably enthusiastic and may
spend hours in their fish house with radio, TV or
just plain checkers.
Skiing is enjoyed by some as well
as bob-sledding or sleighing, and the
new sport of power sledding is attracting
some.
So whatever you want in the realm
of sports and recreation, Pope County
has it. Increasingly people from the
big cities are finding out the ideal vacation
– the one where you go home
rested – can be found in Minnesota,
and especially at the beautiful lakes of Pope County!
Bike Trails
The biking routes (see below) were created to encourage biking and
exploring throughout the beautiful area of Pope County. Along
with Pope County’s routes, Minnesota has hundreds of miles of
bikeways with several others very close by.
POPE COUNTY BIKE ROUTES
Location: Pope County communities
Distance: 31 miles total
Pope County’s bike trails offer a wide variety of terrain—from
vast panoramic views of rolling prairie hills to the sandy shores
of Lake Minnewaska. The paved historic railway trail connecting
Glenwood and Villard takes riders through tunnels of
trees and wide open fields, past wetlands and finally winding
between Lake Amelia and Lake Villard. Benches along the way
provide quiet spots to rest and enjoy the abundant wildlife and
quiet vistas. For more info: westcentralwellness.org. Map online.
CENTRAL LAKES STATE TRAIL
Location: Between Fergus Falls & Osakis
Distance: 55 miles
The hilly terrain of the Central Lakes State Trail cradles dozens
of lakes. Expect to see wildflowers, prairie grass, open
fields, rolling hills, wetland ponds, and plenty of wildlife
along this trail. The western portion crosses only one road
between Fergus Falls and Dalton. The eastern section passes
through Alexandria, but is fairly secluded otherwise. This
trail connects to the Lake Wobegon Trail at Osakis. For more
GLACIAL LAKES STATE TRAIL
Location: Between Willmar & Paynesville
Distance: 27 paved miles
The Glacial Lakes State Trail takes riders through pastures,
fields and ponds and wetlands full of cattails. Green Lake in
Spicer, midway along the trail, offers a chance for a refreshing
swim. Continuing north, the trail crosses a bridge over
Nest Lake and skirts to the east of New London. The trail
follows Highway 23 through Hawick and a two-mile paved
spur at the north end connects the trail to Paynesville. For
FISHING
Lake Minnewaska is the largest lake in the county
and also the 13th largest in the state with 7,110 acres. The
name “Minnewaska” was given to the lake by the white
settlers; the name is made from two Dakota Sioux words,
“minne” (water) and “waska” (good.) The lake still holds true
to this day for those “good waters.” Panfish are probably
the most noted gamefish with abundant numbers of very
large bluegill sunfish and crappie that can be easily caught
from the end of the dock or to depths of 16 ft. or more. The
lake is ideal for large mouth and small mouth bass as well.
One person expressed “...it is hard not to catch fish on this
lake!” Walleye and northern pike are also a favorite and
Minnewaska has quickly become one of the best walleye
lakes in the state. Minnewaska is a favorite destination for
both summer and winter fishermen. Summer is a great time
of the year to visit, but typically there are well over 600 fish
houses that dot the lake in the winter as well! There are
many other lakes in the area that also offer great fishing and
recreational opportunities including Reno, Amelia, Pelican,
Emily, Scandinavian and Gilchrist, to name a few. There are
several excellent resorts and bait shops in the area to assist
you with lodging and up-to-date fishing reports.
HUNTING
Pope County is located at the end of one of the last glacial
moraines that formed Minnesota’s landscapes. The depositing
glacial till left undulating hills, rivers, potholes and lakes which
were mixed with open prairie and islands of oak savannas. This
is a perfect landscape for deer, turkeys, waterfowl and pheasants.
Pope County has a great whitetail deer population and ranks very
high with the number of entries in the Boone and Crocket record
books. The area also has one of the higher ranking pheasant
counts in the state and many blaze orange uniforms can be seen
crisscrossing the fields in search of the ring-necked pheasant. Due
to the numerous wetlands and lakes, waterfowl hunting has also
been very popular. Some of the bigger bodies of water such as
Emily, Nelson and Amelia are favorite stops for waterfowl on their
way north and south. Due to the diverse landscape combined with
agriculture and conservation efforts to develop habitat, the area
is a very popular fall destination. Pope County has abundant and
spacious public hunting areas to accommodate visitors. Stop by
the DNR area office or one of the local sporting goods stores for a
detailed map of all the public hunting areas.
Minnewaska Golf Club is an 18-hole course located just west
Minnewaska. The course has four par five holes for men as
measured from the white tees, five par three holes with the
balance being par four holes. The par fives measure from
471 to 528 yards, the par threes from 118 to 197 yards and
the par fours from 324 to 405 yards.
The course measures 3,092 yards on the front nine and
3,120 on the back nine for a total of 6,212 from the white
This course features a more open layout and is 3,128 yards long. It
also features one of the longest par fives in Pope County and one of
the most challenging par three holes. The fourth hole, a par five, is
550 yards long. The final approach shot must be made over a large
The next hole, the fifth, is a 170-yard par three which requires
a very accurate tee shot to a narrow green surrounded by slough on
60 th Annual
JULY 23, 24, 25 & 26, 2015
Street Dances
by Ann Grandy
Now in its 60th
year, Glenwood
Waterama has been
pleasing crowds for
generations. Founded
in 1956, it is one of the
longest running community
festivals in the state.
The very first year, organizers
hoped to attract between five and ten thousand
people to the festivities - and ended up
hosting 23,000. Events that first year included
a Friday night button dance, followed by seven
events on Saturday including a golf tournament,
Kiddie Parade, swimming and boat races,
a waterski show and the night pontoon parade.
The 100-unit Grande Day parade was a feature
from the very first Waterama, along with the
coronation, fireworks and a coronation ball on
Sunday night.
Each year, new events are added to the
originals. A community church service was
added in 1964, a mini marathon in 1974, and
the first Minnewaska Showstoppers musical,
South Pacific, was added in 1978.
Today’s Waterama truly has something for
everyone. In addition to the three parades,
there are craft, car and waterski shows, medallion
hunt clues, book sales and sand sculptures.
There are kid-friendly events in the
park and sporting events for those who like to
bike, swim, run, golf or play tennis, softball, volleyball
or soccer.
The first couple of years, the event was
held in August, but after organizers consulted
the Farmer’s Almanac and discovered that the
last weekend in July was historically the sunniest
weekend of the summer with the least rain,
the event was moved to that weekend. Since
1959, Waterama has always been the “Last Full
Weekend in July.”
Glenwood & Beyond, a 501c3 nonprofit
organization driven by volunteers, is dedicated
to promoting and enhancing the Glenwood area
through a variety of community-wide projects and
initiatives.
Since it was established in 2006, Glenwood &
Beyond has impacted several areas around Glenwood
including the development of a downtown “pocket
park,” new playground equipment at city park and
an ongoing lakewalk project along the shoreline
of Lake Minnewaska. The lakewalk includes three
“nodes” with creative seating areas, landscaping,
a statue of Princess Minnewaska, and a public
viewfinder. A fourth node is planned for 2015.
Glenwood & Beyond projects are fueled
by three major fundraising events. On Feb. 21,
Waterama and Glenwood Area Jaycees, present
Winterama, a winter festival held on the ice in front
of Lakeside Ballroom, with more activities held in
the ballroom and throughout the city. The second
event is the Glenwood & Beyond Golf Tournament
on June 22. The final event is Pope County Fright
Nights, the area’s premiere haunted attraction
located at Central Square and open on select dates
in October.
The proactive works and accomplishments of
Glenwood & Beyond were recently recognized at
and Ann Bickle and Dina Bremness until 1988 when Ms.
Bremness died. Ann Bickle died in 1984.
The house was built in 1913 by Frank Bickle, a Soo
Line engineer, and was often described as the finest in
Glenwood—particularly in terms of beauty, utility and
comfort. Its two fireplaces, the leaded glass windows and
the beautifully preserved woodwork throughout are of
special interest.
Frank P. Allen, a Grand Rapids, Mich. architect
who also designed several libraries in the Midwest, designed
this turn of the century Craftsman style home.
The precise specifications called for by the architect were
followed with skill and pride by Albert Wollan, a wellknown
and highly respected Glenwood contractor of
the day. Wollan was a master
carpenter and an outstanding
cabinet maker. He personally
crafted much of the interior.
The granite wall that
fronts the Heritage House
grounds is native stone from the
St. Cloud granite quarries.
In the summer of 1988,
Ann Williams married Frank Bickle and
came to Glenwood at the age of 50.
Bremness Gallery is named to honor
Dina Bremness who was an amateur
artist after her retirement.
Dina Bremness was the superintendent
at the Glenwood Hospital. The hospital
was located directly across from the
Frank and Ann Bickle home.
A construction crew headed by
Albert Wollan built the home that was
described as “the finest in Glenwood”
for Frank Bickle.
when the house was scheduled for public auction, a
group of Glenwood women took action to save the
gracious old home with its handsome furnishings and
rare old tapestries for the community.
In 1997 the house was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places in recognition of Ann
Bickle’s significant contributions to her local and state
community.
HOLIDAY TEAS
Each holiday season, the Ann Bickle Heritage
House hosts a traditional Christmas tea, offering a
chance to take a break in the warmth and charm of a
time past. The house is decked out with holiday cheer,
and the five-course tea service includes something
new plus a few old favorites. Call 320-634-5334 for
more information and tickets. See page 13 for scheduled
holiday tea dates.
BREMNESS GALLERY
The Bremness Gallery, located on the grounds
of the Ann Bickle Heritage House, opened its doors
in 1991. It was named to honor Dina Bremness, who
was an amateur artist after her retirement and
nurse-companion to Ann Bickle.
The building was originally a modest, one and a
half story carriage house which was transformed into
an interesting and functional space by Orlando Haugland
for a variety of art exhibitions. Orlando was an inspirational
Glenwood High School art instructor and a
gifted artist who worked successfully in several media.
Following Orlando’s specifications, area volunteers
shared their skills to create the intimate and
charming gallery. Volunteers continue to staff and
support the Bremness Gallery financially.
Each summer the Bremness Gallery is host to a
different exhibition. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday,
10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment. The Bremness
Gallery can be reached at 320-634-3163 or bremnessgallery@yahoo.com.
THE PEOPLE
Ann Jones Bickle was born in Wales in 1886. At
age 18 she emigrated to the U.S., but maintained a lifelong
pride and love for Wales.
Ann moved to Glenwood after her marriage to
Soo Line Engineer Frank Bickle in 1936. Instead of
living a life of privilege, as she could have done, Ann
chose an active civic life. She organized the Glacial
Ridge Hospital Auxiliary while the hospital was being
built in 1939. So impressed by what a group of women
volunteers could accomplish, she worked to organize
other auxiliaries throughout the state and Canada,
all at her own expense. In 1946, she was one of three
women who founded the Minnesota State Hospital
Auxiliary, serving as its first president for two terms.
Ann died in 1984 at the age of 98. The Ann Bickle
Heritage House board of directors intends to honor her
memory by maintaining her home as a Welsh house.
Francis B.J. Bickle had roots in Devonshire, England.
When he was orphaned at age 12, he worked as
a farmhand and saved money for two years so he could
emigrate to Canada.
In 1896, Frank joined the Soo Line Railroad as a
fireman. Five years later he transferred to Glenwood,
moved up to the position of engineer, and spent his
entire career making the 186-mile run between Glenwood
and Thief River Falls. He retired after 50 years
with the Soo Line.
Frank was a private person, and it is little known
that he filled coal bins for many families during the Depression
and provided shoes and sweaters for children
where he traveled. He died in 1959 at the age of 82 after
23 years of marriage to Ann.
Dina Bremness was born in Chippewa Falls
Township in Pope County in 1905. She attended schools
in Sedan and Villard, Minn., took nursing training at
Kahler Methodist in Rochester, and worked as an R.N.
in Rochester and Los Angeles.
Early in her career she came home to relieve, for
six months, another nurse in charge of the hospital in
Glenwood. She never left. Dina served as hospital superintendent
from 1940 to her retirement in 1967. She
was one of very few rural presidents of the Minnesota
Hospital Association.
Dina had a close association with Ann Bickle
through hospital work which evolved into a special
friendship. Following Frank Bickle’s death in 1959,
Dina moved in with Ann. When Ann became ill, Dina
cared for her until her death in 1984. Dina died in 1988.
The Pezhekee National Golf Course, located at
Peters Sunset Beach Resort just south of Glenwood,
is one of Minnesota’s most beautiful courses,
offering challenging golf and spectacular views of
Lake Minnewaska.
The resort is a family owned business and features
an historic lodge, rooms, suites, cabins and
reunion lodges for families and groups. Three
buildings are on the National Register of Historic
Buildings. The resort is situated right on the south
side of Lake Minnewaska only 3.5 miles away. Peters
Resort offers lake activities, swimming, tennis,
a dining room and many beautiful gardens on the
grounds. Call 800-356-8654 for reservations.
The 18-hole course offers something for every
golfer, including holes carved through the hardwood
forests and an island green on the 11th hole.
The course measures 3,261 from the white tees
on the front nine and 3,331 on the back nine for a
total of 6,592 yards. For women, the course measures
2,553 yards on the front nine and 2,936 on
the back nine for a total of 5,489 yards.
Pezhekee National Golf Course is the longest
public course in Minnesota. From the blue tees,
the course is 7,263 total yards. But long-ball hitters
should not get too excited; the course is designed to
place an emphasis on ball placement rather than
just winding up and hitting the long ball.
Controlled play is an important part of the
Peters
sunset
beach
game at Pezhekee on the holes which wander through
the woods. Stray drives end up in the forest where part
of the course is cut. The course also has ravines to cross,
which run toward the lake, and water on several holes.
The course has several
holes with fairly sharp
doglegs requiring the golfer
to consider whether he
or she wants to tee off for
distance or for position.
At one point a bridge runs
across the lake and holes
10-14 feature native grass
as lateral hazards where
the course opens up and
takes on a Scottish Highlands
feel.
Minnesota. At nearly 250 acres, the park features a
40-unit campground for daily and seasonal camping
with a bath building, hiking trails through a huge
wildlife area, softball diamonds, beach, children’s
playground, picnic areas, skateboard park, Frisbee golf,
cross country skiing, snowshoeing and two buildings
which can be rented for family reunions and other
events. There are over 4 miles of walking and biking
trails. Take a walk through the woods and look for
wildflowers, deer, turkeys, birds, or nature at its best.
Barsness Park is not only enjoyed in the summer,
but can be enjoyed in the winter as well for its cross
country skiing and snowshoeing on the trails. Camping
reservations may be made by calling Glenwood City
Hall, 320-634-5433. Daily and seasonal campsite
rentals are available.
>>> History In the early 1930s, the City of Glenwood
obtained 16 acres from the Wheeler Family, on which
the first ski jump was erected. Then in the early 1940s,
town baseball became a top priority and the Glenwood
Lions Club got involved. That is when the City of
Glenwood obtained 40 acres from James E. Barsness
which was a pasture at that time. A grant for the
purchase and development of the fields was obtained.
In 1977, the park was expanded to 70 acres. The park
continued to grow to where it is today.

Central Square Cultural & Civic Center is
a nonprofit community arts organization
which formed in 1999. The building was
originally the campus of the old Glenwood
High School. The district built a new school
and the Central Square building was scheduled
for the wrecking ball. A group of former
graduates had a vision for a community center
and arts facility, so they mounted a courageous
effort to save Central Square for the
future.
The mission and purpose of Central
Square, Inc. is to contribute to the quality of
community life by presenting a wide variety
of cultural and performing arts programs for
the residents of West Central Minnesota,
while working to preserve and maintain the
historic building for community events and
recreation.
Central Square Cultural & Civic Center
is a three-level complex and houses:
• a 1,044+ seat classic auditorium with outstanding acoustics
• a regulation gymnasium and basketball court
• an exhibition hall and commerical kitchen with catering services available
• various former classrooms which have been renovated and leased to area businesses
• seven beautiful condominiums
• a community room available for conferences, meetings and social events.
The 2nd Floor Art Gallery is a beautiful exhibit space for artwork, with great lighting and
beautiful wall space for hanging art as well as pedestals for sculptures and three dimensional
works of art. A wonderful variety of art shows and exhibits are scheduled in the Gallery throughout
the year.
In 2003, the Central Square Concert Series was initiated, which brings in a diverse program
schedule of high quality music, theater and dance productions that still thrives today. The Concert
Series each year offers entertainment for all tastes and ages, including symphony orchestras,
ethnic dance, bluegrass, opera and more.
Over the last several years, Central Square has become one of West Central Minnesota’s
premier arts organizations, contributing to the economic vitality of the region through its line-up
of exceptional cultural events. It’s a grand old building; the doors are open during most days and
the welcome mat is out. Come on in!
Glacial Lakes State Park, located five miles south of Starbuck, is at the
crossroads between the original prairie land to the west and the central hardwood
forests to the east. Its hills and valleys graphically show the impact of glaciers that
covered this area 10,000 years ago.
The park preserves an area of rare native prairie grasses and many species of
prairie animals and woodland birds make their home in the 1,880 acre park. There
are several lakes, ponds and marshes in the park, the largest being Mountain Lake,
a 56-acre spring-fed lake. In the shade of oak trees, the park offers 37 campsites,
14 of which are electrified. During the summer season there are hot showers and
modern toilet facilities with easy access in the campground. Glacial Lakes also has
6 camper-cabins available for rent; 4 of them have electricity, making them available
year round. Each cabin sleeps 5 or 6, and has a screen porch. Also available
are 4 hike-in campsites, and a group camp with a large picnic shelter, including an
open fire pit and electricity. The park features 9 miles of horseback riding trails,
and 8 horse campsites. The park has a great group camp site that has lights and
outlets in the picnic shelter as well as 3 RV electric sites.
A swimming beach features crystal clear lake-itch free water, with a nearby
picnic area and boat ramp. Canoe, kayak, and rowboat rentals are available. Within
the park, fishermen can angle for large mouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and
perch in Mountain Lake (no gas motors are permitted.)
In winter, there are 9 miles of snowmobile trails, 6 miles of groomed
cross-country ski trails, and 1.5 miles of designated snowshoe trails. A paved bike
trail/route begins at the park entrance and goes 5 miles north into Starbuck. It
continues paved cross-country to Glenwood and on to Villard–a total of 20 miles.
A trail map is available online at www.glaciallakesstateparkfriends.com and at the
Glacial Lakes State Park office.
A shared naturalist works part-time alongside the park ranger, providing programs
for families. The Friends of Glacial Lakes State Park (www.glaciallakesstateparkfriends.com)
group helps provide a variety of activities throughout the year,
including an Easter egg hunt, an open house picnic in June and candlelit snowshoe/cross-country
ski/walk events in the winter. Star gazing with telescopes is
available one Saturday night each month throughout warmer months by GLASS,
known as the Glacial Lakes Astronomer and Stargazers Society (www.glass.glaciallakesmn.com).
Both the Friends Group and GLASS have a summer schedule for
their events.
Morning Glory Gardens
They’ve been the subject of poetry and the site of weddings. Morning Glory
Gardens, located along the Glacial Ridge Trail Scenic Byway, offer visitors a quiet,
colorful place to enjoy the beauty of the area.
The gardens originally grew from the dream and determination of Glenwood
businessman Edward Barsness. In 1966, Barsness purchased a one-acre swamp along
the shore of Lake Minnewaska, and though he ran into protest, began filling in the
land with a public garden in mind.
Over the course of four years, Barsness poured more than 2,000 hours into the
project, building terraced flower beds out of stone and cultivating the gardens with
more than 30 varieties of flowers.
In 1981, the Challenge Ministry Chapel, built in 1970 on the other side of the
lake, was donated and moved to the gardens.
The origin of the name, “Morning Glory Gardens,” is best described by Barsness
himself. In a 1967 Pope County Tribune article he wrote, “We saw the sun come up
over the broad waters facing Glenwood early one morning and the heavens were
filled with brilliant colors, full of glory.”
Barsness’s vision, now a local tourist attraction, still blooms each summer and is
carefully tended by various Pope County civic groups.
Morning Glory Gardens are located on Highway 28, four miles west of Glenwood and five
miles east of Starbuck.
terracemill
historic site
Terrace Mill was originally built by
settlers from Vermont. It milled up to
40 barrels of flour a day from wheat
brought by farmers from as far away
as the Dakotas. Improvements in transportation,
and the fact that the railroad
didn’t come to Terrace Mill, reduced the
Mill’s ability to compete with bigger
mills elsewhere, notably those on the
Mississippi River in what are now the
Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The Mill has been restored to much
of its former glory and today stands as
a museum and a scenic stop along the
Glacial Ridge Trail. Also nearby are
the keystone arch bridge, weir dam,
early log cabin, and heritage cabin. The
flour mill, built in 1903, is open for tours
during the summer months.
On summer weekends Terrace bustles
with summer visitors touring the
historic mill, marveling at the beauty of
the keystone bridge while the Chippewa
River roars underneath, or perhaps
enjoying a concert at the Mill’s outdoor
amphitheater.
The Terrace Mill Foundation hosts
several major festivals during the summer
and fall each year. Two popular
events are the annual 4th of July festival
held on July 4th and the Minnesota
Fiddler’s Festival held in the end of
September. You may contact the Mill at
Lakeside Ballroom | Lane Studio
The Lakeside Ballroom has been a city fixture in
Glenwood since 1909 when J. H. “Mac” McCauley
offered to build a dance pavilion on land owned by
the city. He told the city that if he could operate the
pavilion for 10 years he would turn it over to the city.
The building of the ballroom was intended to
focus attention on the city as a place for tourism. The
ballroom replaced a previous pavilion which the city
had built in 1885.
The 1909 building constructed by McCauley
cost $3,000. A grand opening of the facility was held
May 28, 1909. In addition to the pavilion, McCauley
operated a large water slide at the site and maintained
the public beach. The city beach remained at the
ballroom site until 1947. He also had a boat rental and
bait business.
Oliver B. “Tuddy” Kaldahl rented the ballroom
from McCauley after starting work at the ballroom by
helping McCauley clean the facility. By 1923 Kaldahl
took over operation of the ballroom, beginning an
association that ran for over 50 years.
The roster of bands which appeared at the
Lakeside over the years included Louis Armstrong,
the Andrews Sisters, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Jack
Mills Orchestra, Tex Beneke, Jack Crawford, Guy De-
Leo, Oscar Danielson, the Dorsey Brothers, the Dukes
of Dixieland, the Everly Brothers, Sammy Kay, Stan
Kenton, Guy Lombardo, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tiny Little,
Al Menke, Red Nickles and the Five Pennies, Al Olson,
Don Redman, Eli Rice, Don Strickland, Conway Twitty
and Lawrence Welk.
The Lakeside had no heating system and operated
as a summer facility only until the late 1930s.
By then the big band era was in full swing, so the
Kaldahls had wooden shutters installed to replace the
the canvas ones and heat was provided by large wood
stoves.
In 1947, the Lakeside Pavilion became the Lakeside
Ballroom. Along with the name change came a
new maple dance floor.
Duane Peterson took over the Lakeside operation
from Kaldahl and Brundin in the 1970s and Arne Moe
took over after Peterson’s death.
In 2001 the city of Glenwood took over operation
of the ballroom as it made improvements to the facility.
Fire destroyed the Lakeside Ballroom on June 7,
2003. The fire was believed to have started from an
old electrical transformer used to run new electrical
lights.
Nearly 300 people showed up for a town hall
meeting about the ballroom. While a lot of questions
about the fire were part of the meeting, the clear
consensus at the time was that the ballroom should
be rebuilt.
A fundraising drive was formed to fill in any gaps
in the financing for a new ballroom and to perhaps add
some features the city might not otherwise be able to
afford.
The contracted completion date was Aug. 1, 2005
and the building was determined to be “substantially
complete” on that date.
Now, ten years later, after the fire and completion
of the new structure, the Lakeside Ballroom has
proven yet to be a destination for many. It provides a
wonderful spot to throw a party, grab a bite or put on
your dancing shoes! Stop by and see for yourself.
1909 The Pavilion was built by J. H.
“Mac” McCauley who offered to build a
dance pavilion on land owned by the city.
The building of the ballroom was intended
to focus attention on the city as a place for
tourism.
1930s Dancing and music grew more
and more popular in the 1930s and as the
ballroom became more successful, operator
Oliver B. “Tuddy” Kaldahl was able to attract
bigger names.
1970s-1980s Duane Peterson took
over the Lakeside operation from Kaldahl
& Brundin in the 1970s and Arne Moe took
over after Peterson’s death. In the mid-80s
the dance club began, started by the Wolfs
& Zubers.
2007-Present The
rebuilt Lakeside Ballroom is
now run and operated by Jill
Solmonson.
discover
minnewaska
Lake Minnewaska is the largest lake in Pope County
and the 13th largest lake in Minnesota. It comes
from the Dakota language, meaning “good water.”
Loosely translated, “minne” means water and
“waska” comes from the Dakota word “washta,”
which means good.
The Ojibwe, however, called it something
that translated to “Dish Lake” because of its shallow
waters. They later named it “White Bear Lake”
after a noble chief whose Ojibwe (Chippewa) people
lived near the lake.
But it was Minnewaska that became the official
name of the lake by act of the Minnesota Legislature
in 1883. A few years later, the lake was then
called Lake Whipple after the missionary Bishop
Whipple, from Faribault. Nobody really knows
when, but Lake Minnewaska, the original name of
the lake, came back into common use and has been
used ever since.
Of course, Pope County is home to many
more lakes than just Minnewaska. It has a number
of well known lakes and some bear the names of
early settlers, according to the pamphlet 100 Years
of Greatness in Pope County, written by Hart Armstrong.
You can read an excerpt from his book on
page 8. Some of those lakes are Lake Amelia and
Lake Johanna, named after the wives of the settlers.
Others were named for “old country names”
like Lake Leven, named by Daniel Pennie for Loch
Leven. Sometimes lakes were more literal, such
as Pike Lake in Nora Township, which had many
pike in its waters; or Grove Lake, because of a large
grove of trees on its shore.
enhance the quality of life and promote
healthy lifestyles for our patients, clients,
employees, organization and communities.
–Mission of the Glacial Ridge Health System
Glacial Ridge Health System (GRHS) is
committed to providing residents and visitors
of the Pope County area with innovative, highquality
care with the latest technology in a
healing environment. On numerous public
databases, patients rate GRHS high on overall
patient satisfaction and their likelihood to
recommend to family and friends.
The integrated health system provides a
broad array of healthcare services that includes
the hospital in Glenwood, primary care clinics
in Glenwood and Brooten, a Walk-in Clinic,
an ambulance service, a fitness center, and
homecare and hospice services. GRHS is a notfor-profit
health system guided by a board of
directors representing the cities and townships
within Pope County.
A team of 16 board-certified family
medicine physicians, mid-level practitioners, and
surgeons provide compassionate care when you
need it most. Services include emergency care,
family medicine, a Walk-in Clinic, maternity
services, geriatrics, inpatient general medicine,
and general and gynecologic surgery. Specialty
care services continue to expand, providing
access to some of the most skilled providers in the
region, right here in Glenwood.
As a certified Trauma Level IV hospital,
GRHS provides 24/7 emergency care. Being
at the forefront of implementing telemedicine
programs such as telestroke, e-emergency and
e-pharmacy, GRHS has greatly enhanced the
quality of emergency care available locally.
They’re also a leader in electronic health
record (EHR) implementation for rural hospitals.
GRHS was the first hospital in Minnesota to meet
all the federal requirements for meaningful use
of electronic medical records. An EHR that is
completely integrated across all areas of care
improves the patient experience and outcomes.
It helps clinicians provide efficient, informed,
results-driven, quality patient care. Glacial Ridge
Health System works closely with Healthland, a
leading nationwide provider of comprehensive
healthcare information systems for rural and
critical access hospitals that was founded and
Elementary School
The Minnewaska Area School
District proudly serves the Minnesota
communities of Glenwood, Starbuck,
Villard, Lowry, Terrace and Sedan. The
district was consolidated in 1993 after
several years of cooperation resulted in
the building of the Minnewaska Area
High School in 1991.
The district currently is comprised
of Minnewaska Area High School, Minnewaska
Area Middle School, Minnewaska
Area Elementary School, Early
Childhood Family Education and Minnewaska
West, which houses the Alternative
Options High School, Day Treatment
Program and Early Childhood
Special Education.
The district currently serves more
than 1,000 students in grades kindergarten
through twelve. In addition to
our regular programs, we offer a variety
of Early Childhood Family Education
programs, a full slate of activities and
athletics, and Community Education offerings.
The district boasts a strong academic
tradition which has resulted in
achievement scores well above the state
average in all subject areas. Minnewaska’s
elementary and middle schools
were named Minnesota Reward Schools
in 2012, placing them in the state’s top
15% receiving Title 1 funding. The district
has achieved a 99% graduation rate
and 86% of our graduates go on to two
or four year post-secondary education.
The mission of the Minnewaska Area
School District is to always place students
first in order to produce individuals
with the confidence and ability to
pursue and achieve their highest aspirations
in a safe supportive environment
maximizing the resources of a united
community.
The Glacial Hills Elementary
School is a kindergarten through 6th
grade tuition free public elementary
charter school in Starbuck. The doors
of this independent school opened
for the first time in the fall of 2007 to
children in Starbuck and surrounding
communities. Glacial Hills Elementary
is sponsored by the Audubon Center of
the North Woods in Sandstone, Minnesota
and is approved by the Minnesota
Department of Education.
Glacial Hills Elementary’s specific
program focus is on the environment.
The students are provided with an educational
environment that focuses on
experimental learning and the natural
resources in the area in which Starbuck
is located.
Educational curriculum is in place for
reading, math, language arts, science,
health, social studies, Spanish, and environmental
education. There are also
music and physical education programs
as well as all special education services.
Glacial Hills Elementary offers
free all day every day kindergarten
with small class sizes being an emphasis.
There is a maximum number of
20 students per classroom. Parent and
community involvement is a key component
of the school.
Our vision is to create a highly
effective, K-6 environmental school
that acknowledges students’ individual
learning styles and develops analytical,
creative and critical thinking.
Our mission is to teach rural, K-6
students an appreciation of local and
global environments, and encourage
academic excellence leading to productive,
responsible and caring citizens.
–Mission of the Starbuck Chamber
Starbuck, Minnesota offers you a friendly,
down-home atmosphere with lots and lots
of heritage and pride. It is located on Lake
Minnewaska, the 13th largest lake in Minnesota.
The lake is a valuable resource to Pope County,
providing year-round water sports activities,
including fishing, boating, watercraft activities
and swimming.
Lake Minnewaska is a paradise for all fishermen
with stocking programs of walleye, northern
pike, bass, sunfish and crappies. Fishing season
brings a parade of boats and campers heading for
the boat launch at the city marina.
Starbuck is noted also for hunting, hiking and
bike trails, snowmobile trails, unique shopping
and just relaxing. You’ll find fun and recreation
no matter what the season: spring, summer, fall
and winter.
The Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors
and hosts many events during the year. The
SACC hosts the annual Heritage Days during the
July 4th holiday. Many activities take place, such
as a fly-in pancake breakfast by the Pope County
Flyers, craft fair, kiddie games at the Depot, inflatables,
kiddie parade, Johnny Holm dance sponsored
by the Minnewaska Jaycees, Miss Minnewaska
queen coronation, grande day parade and
fireworks.
On the second weekend in August, the 8th annual
Starbuck Dragon Boat Races will be held on
the western shores of Lake Minnewaska. You
will find the mighty dragon boats sounded by the
pounding of drums and cheering. Over 3,000 people
are either paddling, watching, cheering or just
having a great time down in the city park.
The chamber also sponsors a Christmas Open
House, bake sale and Santa Day in December. This
year marks the 5th annual Fish House and Anything
Lighted Parade on the first Saturday in December,
followed by the unveiling of the Christmas
lights and a chili feed. The Starbuck Area Chamber
of Commerce is very proud of Starbuck and the
Lake Minnewaska area.
A caring and most comfortable place
by Deb Mercier
A Caring and Most Comfortable Place – for both young and old, and those in
between. That’s the truth!
Lowry is located in Pope County, about halfway between Minneapolis and Fargo.
It is primarily a farming community, but it does have several manufacturing
facilities. It has also become a bedroom community for many who work
in neighboring towns as well as summer homes for many who winter down
south.
Lowry was incorporated as a village on May 5, 1896. The village was named in
honor of Thomas Lowry, a lawyer and businessman from Illinois who settled
in Minneapolis.
Lowry Celebration
An annual event, the Lowry Celebration provides residents and visitors alike
a chance to celebrate the village of Lowry with a small-town summer street
dance. This year’s dance is set for June 20, 2015.
explorevillard
Surrounded by lakes and small town charm.
by Deb Mercier
Villard is the namesake of Henry Villard, a president of the Northern Pacific
Railroad Company. Earl M. Woodward described the town’s birth in an 1883
edition of the Villard Bulletin. He wrote, “Last year the site of the town was a
wheat field, and although no building was commenced until late in September,
there has sprung from the stubble, as by magic, a village that can now boast of
25 prosperous business houses, stores, market places, shop and hotel, church,
schools and homes.” The town of Villard continues to hold onto that magic, offering
an idyllic, small-town atmosphere and abundant natural beauty.
Lakes near Villard
Named in honor of a pioneer’s daughter, Lake Amelia is the largest lake near
Villard, boasting an area of 932 acres. The lake’s average depth is 21 feet, but
reaches 71 feet at its deepest point. Lake Amelia is nearly three miles long and
has a shoreline of more than seven miles. Lake Villard lies just to the north of
Lake Amelia. This nearly round lake has an area of 536 acres, with a diameter
of just more than a mile and a total shoreline of approximately 3.5 miles. Lake
Villard’s median depth is 11 feet, bottoming out at a maximum of 16 feet.
Knapp Park
Knapp Park was presented to the village of Villard by Lois Pennie Knapp in
1963 and named in honor of her husband. The park’s 33 acres have been developed
to include camping facilities with electric hookups, picnic shelters, a group
camping area and playgrounds. This development was made possible largely
through the efforts of the Villard Improvement Committee.
Villard Community Center
The Villard Community Center was made possible by the donations and dedication
of many in the community. Its grand opening was held in 1982; since
then the community center has lived up to its name by hosting town meetings,
elections and celebrations of all kinds. The cannon in front of the Villard Community
Center dates back to the Civil War and was given to the Villard School
District.
