An interior design scheme and bespoke kitchen
transformed this large open-plan room into a chic

The bespoke Shaker-style cabinetry by Wooden Heart of
Weybridge has been hand-painted in two hues from Farrow
& Ball – Oval Room Blue on the island and cooking area plus
Shaded White on the remaining cabinetry – creating contrast
between the areas. The cabinetry has a cock bead detail to
the outer frames (a narrow half round bead that surrounds
the drawer and door fronts) adding interest. The addition
of contemporary handles complement the stainless steel
appliances and the industrial style pendant lights above the
island. A large decorative cornice has been used above the
wall and tall units, which gives the cabinetry a full-height
appearance, while the illuminated glass fronted units either
side of the range break up the run of cabinets.
A large island has been incorporated into the design, it has a
white Carrara polished quartz worksurface and a built-in sink.
The beauty of an island is that it creates a central hub to the
kitchen plus has the added practicality of a sizeable worksurface
plus additional storage underneath – appliances can also be
housed within it, as with this wine cabinet.
In addition to the painted cabinetry and island, elements of oak
have been designed into the kitchen. Theresa Williams, design
and specifications manager, Millgate says, “In my experience,
if there is room, a breakfast bar is important to bring the rest
of the family into the kitchen area. As it is a casual seating
area it provides a space for the family to relax informally.” Here
a bespoke demi-lune oak breakfast bar has been made with
space for three to sit on height-adjustable industrial style swivel
stools with wooden seats. A beautiful burr oak mantel also adds

With a large open-plan space with different zones such as this,
it is important that the overall colour scheme runs throughout
each area. Here this has been achieved with sympathetic interior
design so the kitchen, lounge and dining area all flow as one.
Theresa says, “The interior design by Alexander James Interiors
complements the finishes of the kitchen which works together
to create a well thought-out and impressive overall scheme.” An
example of this is the large L-shaped seating area in the lounge
zone, which draws elements from the kitchen and dining area
through the fabrics used – the blue cushions mirror the finish of
the kitchen cabinets, while the horizontal striped versions tie-in
to the seat covers in the dining area.

As a whole, the space is a collaboration of both contemporary
