Special Economic Zones (SEZs)<br />
The Government of <strong>India</strong> had announced a SEZ Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce<br />
scheme in April, 2000 with a view to providing and Industry, Government of <strong>India</strong> has been<br />
an internationally competitive environment for notifying the Jurisdictional Directors of STPI as the<br />
exports. The objectives of SEZs include making Development Commissioners of <strong>IT</strong>/<strong>IT</strong>ES SEZs since<br />
available goods and services free of taxes and November 12, 2007 in recognition of STPI's<br />
duties supported by integrated infrastructure for expertise and the effective role it played in<br />
export production, expeditious and single administering STP/EHTP schemes which are 100 %<br />

In order to give a long term and stable policy With the above notification, 134 <strong>IT</strong>/<strong>IT</strong>ES SEZs across<br />
framework with minimum regulatory regime the country have come under the umbrella of STPI<br />
and to provide expeditious and single window and nearly 73 more SEZs are expected to be notified<br />
clearance mechanism, the Special Economic in the near future. As Development Commissioners,<br />
Zones Act, 2005 has been brought into effect Jurisdictional Directors of STPI are required to<br />
along with the Special Economic Zones Rules, facilitate the growth of infrastructure in the SEZs by<br />

objectives of the SEZ Act are:<br />

setting up of units in the Zones, besides ensuring<br />
(a) Generation of additional economic activity compliance to all rules and regulations. They also<br />
ensure proper coordination with the central and<br />
(b) Promotion of exports of goods and services State Governments and monitor the performance of<br />
SEZ Developers and Units in the zones. They are<br />
(c) Promotion of investment from domestic and<br />
overall in-charge of these Zones and do exercise<br />
foreign sources<br />
administrative control and supervision over the<br />
(d) Creation of employment opportunities<br />
officers and employees appointed in the zones and<br />
report to Ministry of Commerce on investment,<br />
(e) Development of infrastructure facilities<br />
