GREAT FEAT OF GIVING
TWENTY farmers in Uganda will this
year have two new goats each, thanks to
the efforts of St Kilian’s Primary School,
Bendigo.
The kids have this year raised more than
$800 in the annual Caritas Ks walk around
Lake Weeroona on March 20, raising money
for overseas Catholic Aid.
Principal Paul Wilkinson said the theme
for this year was ‘An environment to grow in’,
which emphasised to students the need “not
to just give people money, but to better their
lives”.
“We have decided to raise money this year
for farming families in Uganda ... we will
enable twenty farming families to receive two
goats to breed and share, as well as seeds and
training to grow their food and skills in constructing
a shelter and caring for the animals,”
he said.
Students enjoyed walking and running
around the lake, and afterwards were treated
to a barbecue lunch cooked by St Kilian’s
Parents and Friends.
Other schools around the diocese also conducted
a Caritas Ks walk, including Catholic
College Bendigo,
Years 7 to 9 students and staff participated
in the College’s annual Caritas Ks walk.
The 13-kilometre walk followed the
O’Keefe Trail from Giri’s Lane near Arakoon
to Catholic College La Valla (Junortoun).
While the majority of students walk, a
group decided to jog the distance this year.
Back at the college, the students had a sausage
sizzle for lunch and enjoyed a mini carnival
– a range of stalls and activities organised
by students to raise money for Caritas.
The walk also raised awareness of the activities
of Caritas Australia.
Students were inspired in their efforts to
raise money by Caritas Lenten Speaker Evan
Ellis from the Caritas Australia National
Office.
A young man of 23, Evan has just returned
from an immersion experience in India with a
group of students.
