Greetings V-Hawk Fans:
It is a pleasure to welcome you to Viterbo
University and to our athletic programs
and activities. Whether you are a player,
parent, alumni, booster or opponent, we
hope your experience with the university
is a positive one. We are proud to be members
of the NAIA and are fully committed to
its Champions of Character initiatives and core values of respect,
responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
We believe varsity athletics are fantastic opportunities for
development of lifelong skills that prepare our students for future
success as leaders and people of character and integrity. Our
Catholic and Franciscan heritage commits us to behave according
to Gospel values and to afford each other the dignity and respect
we deserve as children of God—yes, that means opponents and
game officials.
As a boy, adolescent and weekend athlete, I participated actively
in athletics and I appreciate the role of sport in our society and
its impact on our campuses and communities. I also am active in
the Council of Presidents of the NAIA which strives to maintain
athletics in its proper balance at an institution of higher learning.
Of course, our coaches and players want to win every contest and
we support their efforts enthusiastically, and Joan and I are loyal
V-Hawk fans.
Enjoy the contest—Go V-Hawks!
Bald eagle over Mississippi River
La Crosse Quick Facts
Home to 52,000 people, and with a metropolitan
population of more than 155,000, La Crosse really
is a choice town. Breathtaking beauty surrounds
the city, which is nestled between the majesty of
the Mississippi and the scenic tree-topped bluffs.
No wonder La Crosse is known as “God’s Country.”
La Crosse is a perfect blend—charming and safe
like a small town but filled with exciting recreational
and social opportunities like any big city. It’s a
great place to go to school, live, and work. More
than 12,000 college students from the city’s three
college campuses agree. Bustling with energy,
there’s always something to do.
For the nature lover: Ski, boat, canoe, swim, hike,
bike, walk, jog, rollerblade, hunt, fish, or read a
book by the river.
Historic Pearl Street
View of La Crosse atop Grandad Bluff
Riverside Park
For the city lover: Shop at Valley View Mall or in
the downtown historic district. See a movie or a
play. Check out the concert listings. Grab a latte or
smoothie in one of the city’s coffeehouses. Listen
to the symphony in the park. Explore the art galleries
or simply check your email at an Internet café.
Facts…
• Founded in 1842, La Crosse is over 160 years old.
• Fur traders gave the city its name when they
spotted Winnebago, Sioux, and Dakota Indians
playing a game similar to the French game of
“lacrosse.”
• La Crosse is at the intersection of the Mississippi,
the Black, and the La Crosse Rivers.
• La Crosse has many old, but funky and renovated
buildings. In fact, downtown La Crosse is one of
the largest historic districts in Wisconsin.
• Health care and education rank high in La Crosse’s
business and industry.
• La Crosse has the largest German fall festival in
the Midwest—Oktoberfest.
• Two million lights illuminate Riverside Park each
Christmas thanks to the hard work of Rotary
Lights volunteers.
(NAIA), a governing body that encompasses 23
national championships for 300 member institutions.
Every year, more than 50,000 student-athletes
participate in NAIA competitions.
In over 67 years of operation, the NAIA has consistently
focused on the student-athlete by initiating
the strongest academic standards and providing
more national championship opportunities in intercollegiate
sports than any other organization. The
NAIA is committed to offering student-athletes the
most diversified college life experience. The NAIA
and its member institutions do not waver from
emphasizing the values of good sportsmanship
through athletic competition.
The NAIA Advantage
There are many advantages to competing in NAIA
sports. Besides the benefit of close-knit communities
and small class sizes on the typical NAIA campus,
NAIA athletics offer:
• Maximum opportunity to participate in regular
season contests and National Championships
• Flexibility to transfer without missing a season of
eligibility
• Fewer recruiting restrictions
• Focus on the education and character development
of the student-athlete
Mission Statement
The NAIA Champions of Character initiative
In 2005, following a Northwoods League
(NWL) Championship and Field Manager of
the Year award, Chad Miller became the first
Viterbo University Alum to be named head
coach of the V-Hawk baseball team.
Miller is in his sixth season as the
V-Hawks head coach and has been a part of
more than 128 wins making him the winningest
coach V-Hawk history. Over the past
four seasons, the V-Hawks have really started
to make some noise as they have won 116
games and have finished top five of the very
competitive Midwest Collegiate Conference.
Last season, the V-Hawks finished 28-21-1 overall, 16-8 in conference play,
and qualified for the MCC Tournament.
Miller finished his playing career in a V-Hawk uniform as a two way
player and threw a no-hitter against Martin Luther College during his
senior season. Miller was also a member of the 2002 V-Hawk regional
runner-up team that advanced farther in the postseason than any previous
V-Hawk baseball team.
After finishing his playing career, Miller spent three seasons as the
V-Hawk hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time as the
hitting coach, the V-Hawks broke six single season records and six all-time
records including single season team record for wins. Miller’s coaching experience
also includes time as the pitching coach at his alma mater Sparta
High School as well as at Aquinas High School in La Crosse.
Miller proved his head coaching capabilities in 2005 with the Thunder
Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods Collegiate League. The Border Cats
were picked to finish last during the preseason and silenced critics by
finishing the season with the best overall record at 44-24. The Border Cats
capped their most successful season in franchise history by defeating the
defending champion Madison Mallards in the NWL Championship Series.
Miller also spent time as an assistant in the NWL with playoff teams; the
La Crosse Loggers and the Alexandria Beetles. During his three years in
the NWL, Miller coached 31 players who went on to play professional
baseball including two first round draft picks; Max Scherzer 2006 (Arizona
Diamondbacks) and Matt Mangini 2007 (Seattle Mariners)
A native of Sparta, Wisconsin, Miller graduated from Sparta High
School and started his college playing career at Des Moines Area Community
College in Boone, Iowa where he was an Iowa Junior College All-Star.
Miller then continued on to the University of Florida where he earned a
roster spot on the 1996 Florida Gator baseball team which advanced to
the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska and finished third in
the nation. As a player, Miller was a teammate of David Eckstein (Toronto
Blue Jays), Brad Wilkerson (Texas Rangers), Josh Fogg (Cincinnati Reds),
Mark Ellis (Oakland A’s), and Corey Koskie (Milwaukee Brewers).
Miller received his bachelor’s degree from Viterbo in business
administration with an emphasis in marketing management and earned a
master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Wisconsin-
La Crosse. In addition to his coaching duties, Miller serves as the Director
of the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Gregg Erickson is in his fourth year as a volunteer assistant coach for the
V-Hawks. Erickson ironically began his coaching career with the V-Hawks
in the program’s infancy back in the late 1980’s, where he assisted for
three seasons under two head coaches: Pete Peerenboom and later Kevin
Johnston. Since then, he has coached at the high school level at Holy
Cross High School in Chicago, Ill., Cashton High School, Wis., and Central
High School here in La Crosse. Erickson has a total of 19 years of baseball
coaching experience.
A First Team All-State high school player at La Crosse Central High
School, Erickson played baseball for UW-Eau Claire, where he was team
Captain in 1984. He later went on to play and coach a semi-pro team, the
La Crosse Angels. It was that association with the (Angels) that introduced
Erickson to the pioneers of V-Hawk baseball, including Damian Miller, and
the relationship with Viterbo had begun.
