TONIGHT: INAUGURAL DEABTE NIGHT!!
Up for a date of arguing? - Then come along and see our Class 7 students, High School students and
staff in action. It‟s all happening tonight (Friday 11 th ) from 6 – 9pm in the school hall.
1. Topic: That school students should wear a uniform.
2. Topic: That life was meant to be easy.
3. Topic: That a “Steiner” Education is superior to a “State” Education – Class 11 students
affirmative, staff negative.
The evening will start with tea, coffee and cake with the first debate beginning at 6.30pm. Tea,
coffee and cake will also be offered at intermission. This event is lined up to be a great, fun
evening for all and also offers our students a platform to practice their public speaking, as well as
their arguing skills!
FROM THE DIRECTOR
With the temperature around 34C on Thursday, and the lawns browning off, there‟s no doubt
summer is here. We are concerned about the high likelihood of snakes on and near the campus, so
have recently cancelled some hikes, closed off access to some areas, and continue to speak to the
children about the risks. Many of you live on acreage and near bush, so I'm sure you are just as
concerned. We are seeking the support and assistance of all parents, by asking you to speak to your
own child(ren) about the danger - sometimes the message won't get through as strongly from
teachers in a group situation as it needs to, unless it‟s also heard at home from parents.
Term 4 Week 5 11 November 2011
The student computer program, funded by the Federal government, designed to give every student
in Australia in Years 9-12, access to a computer, has now been fully implemented at SVSS, with the
arrival yesterday of 15 desktop computers for the Training Room in our beautiful Library complex.
We now have a combination of laptop and desktop computers, being used in various ways by the
High School students and staff.
Speaking of computers, if your child has access to a computer at home, as a parent you need to help
your child navigate safely and securely in an online world, just as you do in an offline world. This
week‟s Parent Insight article, “Facing Up to Facebook”, has some useful tips in this regard. Please
click on the link in the newsletter email or if you need a paper copy, please ask the office.
FROM THE EA’s
With the full moon tonight coinciding with the Inaugural Great Debate and Armistice Day one
would expect a quiet weekend. But not so! The last Open Day of the year will be held on Saturday
in conjunction with the Working Bee. We hope it will be a social and worthwhile day. On Sunday
the High School Ensemble will perform at the Northey Street Markets. There are many other events
scheduled between now and the end of the year and we hope you are able to participate in many of
them.
At our faculty meetings last week we heard how successful the camps had been and received
positive feedback regarding the students‟ behaviour. I‟d like to share a reflection from a parent who
attended the Class 5 Camp:
Overall it was a fantastic camp event and very beneficial for students. Some did not want to come
home as it was their “best camp ever”. Combining the Olympics with the Tyalgum programme was
also particularly beneficial. Five days away from parents helped their confidence and ability to
relate with others in their class, as well as connectivity to other schools and the wider world.
Resilience was also strengthened through the variety of activities, some of them new and
challenging, plus the length of time away.
The value of combining with other schools for the Olympics was in letting the students know that
they are part of something greater than just their school. Many teachers, parents and students
commented they didn’t know of Samford Valley Steiner School, and that there was even a Steiner
school in Brisbane! Forming connections was the main concept I thought could be strengthened for
future Olympic camps.
At the whole school faculty meeting, Anne and Marilou shared their thoughts and insights for the
Prep children who will be entering Class 1 in 2012. Last night, at the Class 1 for 2012 parent
evening, Alan Drysdale painted the picture of the seven year journey. It will be his third cycle at the
Samford Valley Steiner School! His main aim for the first year, “that the children know they are
loved by their teacher”.
HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
Some feedback from families in response to the recent Class 9 Bunya Camp
“I have seen students from previous years return from this camp and have always been in awe of the
reverence that is apparent with their return. This year I had my son return from this camp looking
stronger, taller and happier in himself. His words were 'that was the best camp ever'. It was not an
easy camp for him on many levels but he said he learnt so much about himself as well as his peers,
leaving him with more respect as well as understanding for them all. This respect and understanding
has come into the home as well, where everything is appreciated more. I am very appreciative to
Tim and Robyn for being there on the camp and assisting the students through this journey from
childhood into young adulthood.”
“As a parent I did feel somewhat 'interested' in how [my son] would respond to this camp and can
only say that he returned home with a quiet but strong sense of himself and his worth and with a
beautiful letter of love and respect for his life and his mother, which I have always known was
there, but think the camp offered him an opportunity for him to reflect on his "life" and those of his
peers, and how that shapes, not only his future, but those of his class mates. I also felt the class was
more strongly bonded, which they always are after a camp, but there was a 'different' bond this
time, perhaps a compassionate understanding of where their peers have come from and what paths
they are travelling; [My son] certainly articulated this it to me. [he also expressed] a deeper respect
and appreciation for one of his peers whom he has always liked, but this camp opened up a new and
richer appreciation of this person. He said he loved the camp... ”
“[My daughter] has returned with a stillness at her core that is quite adult...a fulcrum that, I'm sure,
will help her navigate the next few years of, for her, substantial changes... Sincere Thanks from all
under our roof to you [all] ...”
“ … my daughter has raved about the camp since coming home. She got an enormous amount out
of it and very much feels as though she has grown because of it. I have seen camps like this at other
schools (Hillbrook has something similar) but I didn't sense the same sincerity that the teachers at
Steiner add to this experience. There is a genuine feeling of warmth and a knowledge of each
student that enhances the camp activities.”
We are pleased to inform you that Jenny Agius and Peter Glasby will be sharing the role of the
Class 8 Guardian. Jenny Agius has been a teacher in the high school since its second year of
operation and Peter Glasby started in his role as Education Administrator at the start of 2011. Peter
has been Guardian of several classes previously at Mt Barker as well as the current Class 12.
Together they will bring a wealth of support for the class and they are looking forward to get to the
role.
Mercedes Logan
Staff Profile of Mark Piper
Class Guardian for Class 10 2011. Teaches Mathematics, Natural Science, Hard Craft
Where did life begin for you?
In Cardiff, Wales, in 1972. I left when I
was 18 months old. By the time I was 12
years old, I had moved eight times.
What were the highlights of your
education?
Winning 50 pounds at the Capel Gardens
Show. I got two prizes that year- the best
sewing and the best totem pole. It was a
clothes peg with a felt crocodile around
it, which my mother still uses. Then I got
forced to sit the 11+exam which I sat
against my will and got selected to the
Judd All Boys Grammar School and had
the worst 7 years of my life. I went from
being a big fish in a little pond to a
minnow in the ocean.
What happened after that?
At 16 you can leave school but I stayed
on because that‟s what you did. I did
French, Economics and Biology. At 18
all my peers were getting help to fill out
UCAS forms to go to Uni. I finished
school and continued my weekend job of
cleaning in the hospital. I took up work in pubs, in a sports shop and laboured on a building site. By
accident I found a job working for the Hop Marketing Board. Within 6 weeks I was running the
whole of the post fermentation bittering process. I felt like I had a place in the real world. After 9
months, I started travelling in January 1992 and flew to San Francisco, reaching Australia for the
first time in June 1992. I decided then I was going to live in Australia.
So how long did you travel for?
All of ‟92 including travelling through Asia and got back to England, where the first thing I asked
was, how I could get back to Australia. I was told I needed a University degree, so I rang Oxford
and got accepted into a degree in Nutrition and Food Science which I completed in 1996.
Page | 4
Term 4 Week 5 11 November 2011
How did you come to teaching?
I travelled around the Middle East in 1997 and then moved back to Australia where I ended up
working in a school in Arnhem Land – Numbulwar as the janitor and my girl friend was the English
/Drama teacher. They noticed I was good at maths and I was quickly promoted to the Bursar
position and also taught Environmental Science, but I woke up one morning and decided to return
to England, Christmas ‟97 to complete a Post Graduate Certificate of Education. I then worked as a
teacher in a government school in Oxford, for three years, after which I applied for residency in
Australia again.
When did you return?
I was sick of waiting for the reply from Australia and got a years‟ work visa for New Zealand. Just
as we were going to the airport, the papers for Australia came through and I landed in Australia
again in 2002 and got a job in Djarragum College, Gordonvale, Cairns, till the end of 2002 and then
returned to Europe, Brussels for romantic reasons. I spent another year in the drizzle and rain doing
relief work before heading back to Australia across the Pacific. On the way I fulfilled a youthful
dream of visiting the island of Bora Bora (an outer island of Tahiti). I have been in Brisbane since
2003.
How did you run into Steiner Education?
In 2007 I answered an advert for a Science / Maths position while I was working for a
Biotechnology project. I got the job and started in 2008. Before that my only knowledge of Steiner
Education was to visit a friend who was in a play performed at Michael Hall, which is 5 min from
my parent‟s house.
So what is it about Steiner Education that attracts you?
I find myself in a place where I am valued and respected, where I find colleagues who I respect. It‟s
a place where you want to put down roots and suits me.
Do you have a wish for the school?
I would love to see it be fully embraced and supported by the whole community and beyond.
Is there something here you can grow with?
The short answer is „Yes‟. Somethings are quick for me, which need a quick response. Other things
take longer and I take them like a drip feed slowly bit by bit.
CLASS 7 CAMP
Class 7 spent last week on holiday [um, camp!] on Great Keppel Island. As a culmination to the
'Wish, Wonder and Surprise" main lesson the camp involved a series of daily intensive poetry
writing exercises using the Japanese forms of Haiku and Haibun and exploring the poetic
techniques of simile, metaphor and personification. The spectacular tropical island environment
provided immense inspiration for poetry. Using a set of forms provided by Jan we also engaged in a
daily eurythmy performance, sometimes on the beach [Queensland eurythmy]. A lot of the writing
was done individually; much was of a collaborative group nature. Below is a collaborative effort.
A selection of 27 lines of poetry [one for each camp participant - plus three more] was chosen by
Thursday's guest editors: Beatrice Hook, Kathryn Beattie and Velvet See, covering a broad
perspective on the island venue.
Thirty ways of viewing Great Keppel Island
Cone shell, enticing people with your interesting shell, little do they know you are weaving them
into your deadly trap.
Did you bring the sunscreen dear? Did you bring the water, the towel, the hat; the kitchen sink? Yes
dear, it‟s all in the backpack.
Sweeping, swooping in the sky, I hope your colours never die, rainbow lorikeet.
An unexpected, ever changing, tropical cyclone.
Water bottle - a grand keeper of water.
Unaccompanied sunscreen - burnt skin, stinging pain.
Each night different - more practice; more beauty - tropical sunset.
The long tropical beach is a place for fun and wonderful memories.
Stone curlews - your annoying cry keeps us up all night.
Arched like a bow, yet frozen solid, the crescent moon guards the heavens.
Palm tree, your out-grown leaves blow slowly in the wind.
You move near to my face, pressing up against me to kiss me closely, my little snorkel mask.
Aloe vera, soothing burns, relaxing peacefully.
Sandcastle, a resting place for water nymphs.
Stingray, its barbed tail a flick of molten steel, electrocutes its victims' minds.
Staghorn coral, why are you so pock-marked? Why do you look like stuff sea-foam has washed up
on the shore?
Nocturnal possum likes to hide in trees and jump out at girls and scare them.
Reef shark, sleek and peaceful, snaps its way through the ocean as the tide comes in.
Happy fish, clear water, a perfect place is the coral reef.
Flash of light, fruit bat flies - false eclipse of the moon.
Shattered circle, the crescent moon weeps as she searches the sky for her pieces.
Broad brim, stylish angle - sunhat.
Every morning woken by the song of birds, and Alan, followed by the crash of waves - tropical
island.
Bikinis are like new haircuts, everyone notices them.
Squealing children, splash of water, you create memories - coral reef.
Driftwood - white whale bones bleached by the sun.
Glass bottomed boat with a glass bottom, but all I see is bubble fish.
Island ferry - noisy tourists stampede the island.
Rainbow lorikeet - a burst of colour on a dull day.
Lone feather, night time reigns silent - black crow.
Warmest Regards,
clothing handmade cards and exquisite
machine embroideries. There will be a variety
released nationally and internationally her first
instructional DVD called Felting with Fabrics
for well over 15 years. It is available from her
Jump in! Volunteer in Moreton Bay
Volunteering helps build stronger, more
connected and caring communities. But that is
not all it does. It helps build and develop
individuals. The choice to volunteer for nonprofit
organisations in the Moreton Bay Region
is an opportunity to make our community a
better place and make ourselves better people.
The opportunities for volunteering in Moreton
Bay are as wide and varied as our landscape
and our communities, from the shores of
Redcliffe and Bribie Island to the green
pastures of Samford and Woodford.
Volunteering in Moreton Bay is a way for us
all to get our hands and feet dirty in the human,
environmental and social needs of the place
where we live and love to be.
A Comprehensive Directory of Volunteer
Organisation in Moreton Bay Region is now
available. Electronic copies of this directory
can be accessed on the Pine Rivers
Neighbourhood Centre website at
