First speaker was Peter Wilkinson who published the research paper Catholic Parish Ministry in Australia: Facing Disaster? Peter had just the previous week presented this paper to the Bishops’ Commision for Ministry. Second speaker was Cecilia Merrigan csb who spoke of a Sandhurst Response, New Wine New Wineskins – an initiative introducing the possibility of the appointment of a Community Leader in a parish where there is no resident priest – which was launched in the Diocese in November when brochures were distributed in all Parishes. Peter’s research carefully maps trends of Catholic population, numbers of parishes, priests and seminarians. Statistics show 20 per cent of Australia’s priests and one third of seminarians come from overseas. His report concludes with four options – recruit more local priests (current restrictions make this difficult); source from overseas (a questionable long-term solution); Peter Wilkinson Cecilia Merrigan. do nothing (and bring on catastrophe quicker); rethink parish ministry. Cecilia began with the background and principles to New Wine New Wineskins which takes up the fourth option – a rethink of parish ministry. This initiative responds to the data showing impending disaster and takes up the principle that all are called to co-responsibility through baptism, and all have gifts. She went on to describe the possibilities for the role. While not answering the need for provision of Eucharist, it allows for parishes to be maintained and sustained and helps share the ever-increasing load on priests presently. Questions were clarified regarding educational requirements of leaders and whether co-leaders were possible. People were pleased with the Bishops’ Commission’s positive response to Peter. The bishops said this was the first time they’d seen all the data gathered in one document and that they would take this report to Bishops’ Plenary Session in May. The large crowd, more than twice the usual attendance, showed just how much people care about these issues and are keen to discuss possibilities. Help choose Our Lady Fathers Martin Cruickshank and Frank Jones concelebrate Mass. A new year at St Mary’s NATHALIA – St Mary of the Angels has begun its school year with the theme “Reach Out –to each other in friendship, to those in need and to God”. Father Martin Cruickshank, PP Finley and Tocumwal, and Fr Frank Jones, PP Numurkah, concelebrated a Mass to celebrate the new school year on February 11. Fr Martin spoke about the school’s theme of reaching out through stories, including one about Adam Hills (from Spics and Specs) when he was a young man still living with his parents. He performed his first routine for them but was told it was not worthy of him, as it was rude and certainly not funny. He started thinking about it and realised that he should write about what he knew, what he experienced. Once he was “true to himself” and began being the best he could be, desiring to do the right thing, he started to achieve success as a comedian. Fr Martin also reminded us of our logo not just being a visible sign for our College but also for the way we should live: “Thy Will Be Done”, which means to focus on the will of God, doing for others rather than doing for self. This is the message we want for our students: to strive to be their best, to want to do the right thing, to reach out to others to offer friendship and support. Ms Philomena Billington, Director of Catholic Education, Sandhurst also spoke to the community during Mass. She reminded us of our Late Bishop Joseph Grech’s passionate hope for young people and his favourite saying, “God doesn’t make rubbish,” when referring to the young people of our community. Once again the message was of nurturing the desire to be your best with the support of community. During the Mass we had a presentation to our College Dux of 2010, Austin Lancaster. Austin is certainly a young man who always employs a sound work ethic trying hard to do his best, and as a result achieving excellent results. He was still very involved in College life as SRC Chairperson, and also always took the time for his passion – music. Another important element of the Opening College Mass every year is the commissioning of the Year 12 students as the student leaders of our community. This year we also had a special commissioning and welcome of our new Principal, Mrs Leonie Irwin. Fr Frank Jones prayed that God would give her the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of right judgment and courage; the spirit of knowledge and respect and fill her with the spirit of wonder and awe in God’s presence. He concluded that Mrs Irwin be affirmed by the support of the whole College Community. The team seeking to promote a devotion to Mary under the title “Our Lady of Good Counsel” wishes to remind you that the Feast this year is being celebrated on Monday, May 2. Very late, because Easter is late! You are invited to attend the prayer service Caring at a time of need on that day, May 2, at the Cathedral. It will begin at 11am followed by a discussion, in particular, which of the three styles of picture would we like to suggest becomes the ‘preferred Diocesan presentation’. If possible, we hope to visit Genazzano, the home of the bishop, which has a beautiful stained glass depiction of Our Lady of Good Counsel in the dining room. April 2011 News www.sandpiper.org.au – Page 5 Weekend of mateship Bendigo – Forty men participated in the Men Alive weekend at Catholic College Bendigo on March 26-27. Local organising committee chairman Brian Bourke said he was thrilled with the turnout. “The focus was to encourage men to be more active and involved in their local parishes,” he said. “There were outstanding presentations from all of the speakers, with very motivating and down-to-earth suggestions. We enjoyed the opportunity for personal reflection and small group discussion, and were inspired by the honesty and sincerity of the speakers and fellow participants.” Presenters came from Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmania. The weekend concluded with a Mass celebrated by Father Joe Taylor assisted by Deacon Nic MacFarlane. There will be follow-up small group meetings at different parishes. St Augustine’s names new ambassadors As we move into the 2011 School Year, St Augustine’s College, Kyabram would like to announce their new Beacon Student Ambassadors: Matthew Halliday, Alex Darling, Sarah Langley and Elizabeth Jackson. The Beacon Co-ordinator for St Augustine’s College will be Mrs Mary Livingston. The Beacon Foundation is a national non -profit organisation within schools. Beacon’s history of achievement is focused on providing opportunities, knowledge and building skills for young Australians as they complete senior school years and move onto positive pathways of further education, training or employment. The implementation of these innovative projects relies on the support of schools, local communities and the business community at a local and national level. St Augustine’s College looks forward to 2011 with great excitement, providing many opportunities for all Year 10 students including participation in the “Polish” Day, Charter Signing Day, Mock Interviews, Industry Tours and many varied Business Community Events. Our Beacon Student Ambassadors will also represent their school at the Beacon Student Ambassador Training Day and Beacon Foundation Business Partners Meetings scheduled each term.
