Technical Box, continued from page 3 with children. The key is simply to raise our expectations and standards as a whole. When we consistently do that as PARENTS, then coaches who want to maintain their rosters will have to modify their behavior. As we approach the end of the seasonal year, thoughts turn to next year. Look and listen. You already know how your child’s coach handles him/herself. Look around at the other coaches in your age group at the season ending tournaments. Take stock of them all NOW, when they are in their element. If you don’t like what you see/hear, then why listen to their sweet words when they are recruiting your child to come to their club? They will be the same with your child next year. On the other hand, if you like what you see/hear compared to what you are currently getting, a change of scenery may be worth at least considering. Small Club, Big Club none of them are perfect. No coach is perfect. However we can all do better raising the bar of expectations of our coaches. (Of course, we as PARENTS must look ourselves in the mirror and raise our level of behavior across the board, too. But that is a whole other story…) Each spring teams focus on the attempt to reach the finals of the state tournament so that many of them have the opportunity to advance to regional competition. In Oklahoma, two competition venues are available for teams to advance to a regional competition: the Mazzio’s Italian Eatery President’s Cup and the WassCorp State Cup. For teams playing in the President’s Cup (May 5-6 in Norman with finals in Broken Arrow on May 12), the goal is for those teams in the U13 through U17 brackets to advance to the US Youth Soccer Region III President’s Cup in Greensboro, NC. The President’s SMOKE SIGNALS 5 State, Regional, and National Tournament Dates Each summer, the players from Oklahoma selected to participate in the Olympic Development Program attend camps organized and taught by US Youth Soccer administrators and coaches. Many of the players have used this experience to advance to national team sta- BOYS July 8-12 July 13-15 July 13-17 GIRLS June 10-14 July 6-10 July 12-16 Cup regional event runs June 7-10. US Youth Soccer divides the United States into 4 regions and Oklahoma is in Region III. For those teams entered in the WassCorp State Cup, the preliminaries are May 19-20 in Edmond and semis/finals are the next weekend May 26-27 in Edmond. Teams in the U13 through U19 age groups who advance will then attend the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships in Greenville, SC. This marks the first time U13 teams will participate and the event is now an 8 day tournament running June 14-21. Opening ceremonies are on June ODP Camp Dates Set tus and the eventual goal of playing for the United States in the Olympics. The player birth year determines which camp he/ she will attend. The ODP birth year is based on January 1 to December 31, not the school year as with club soccer. 14 and finals on June 21. The teams in the U14 – U19 brackets who are champions of the Region III tournament will advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, SC at the Manchester Meadows complex. The tournament begins July 24 and runs until July 29. Only 60 teams will qualify to participate in the national championship tournament.
