Rules for Milford Summer 3v3 (2013)
(FIFA RULES APPLY IF NOT MODIFIED WITHIN)
NUMBER OF PLAYERS: SIX is the maximum number of players on a team without
approval of the program director; three field players at one time. Players may only play
on one team per division. There are no goalkeepers in 3-v-3 soccer. Substitutes may
occur at ANY dead ball situation (i.e. after a goal, after an injury, goal kick, corner kick,
kick in, penalty kick).
GENDER: Teams will be coed unless there are enough teams to have separate gender
divisions.
EQUIPMENT: All players must wear shin guards. Any player without shin guards will
not be allowed to play. Teams are responsible for providing game balls.
FIELD DIMENSIONS: 20 x 30 yard field for U5/U6 Candy to U10 Wings. 30 x 40 for
U12 Strikers through U19 Seniors.
GOAL BOX: The goal box, eight feet wide by ten feet long, is directly in front of the
goal. No player may touch the ball within the goal box, however any player may move
through the goal box. Any part of the ball or player's body on the line is considered in the
goal box; the player is an extension of the box.
COACHES “SELF REF:” The coaches of the two teams will ref the game jointly. All
references to “referees” in this section should be considered a reference to the “coach
referees.”
NO PLAYER MAY TOUCH THE BALL IN THE GOAL BOX (U8 Passers and up
only): No player may touch the ball while the ball is in the goal box. If a defender
touches the ball in the goal box, a penalty kick is awarded to the offensive team. If an
offensive player touches the ball within the goal box, a goal kick is awarded to the
defensive team. If the ball comes to a complete stop in the goal box, regardless of which
team touched it last, a goal kick is awarded to the defensive team. This rule applies to U8
and up only.
NOTE: In the U5/U6 Candy division, players may touch the ball in the goal box,
however coaches are encouraged to not place a player as a “defacto goalie” in front of
goal. We want to encourage young players to be part of the game and learn soccer skills.
Standing in front of a goal to only block shooting attempts by the opponent accomplishes
neither of these two goals.
GAME DURATION: For U8 Passers and older divisions, the game shall consist of two
20 minute halves separated by a five minute halftime period. For U5/U6 Candy divisions,
the game shall consist of two 16 minute halves separated by a five minute halftime

period. Games tied after regulation play shall end in a tie. There will be no overtime
periods.
GOAL SCORING: A goal may be scored only from a touch on the offensive half on the
playing field. Goals scored from the midfield line or the defensive half will not count and
a goal kick is rewarded to the defensive team.
NO STANDINGS: Standings will not be kept. Scores will not be reported.
NO OFFSIDES IN 3-V-3 SOCCER: Offsides rule does not apply to 3-v-3 soccer.
NO SLIDE TACKLING IN 3-V-3 SOCCER: Slide tackling is not permitted in 3-v-3
soccer.
FIVE YARD RULE: In all dead ball situations, defending players must stand at least
five yards away from the ball. If the defensive player's goal area is closer than five yards,
the ball shall be placed five yards from the goal area in line with the place of the penalty.
KICK-INS: The ball shall be kicked into play from the sideline instead of throw in.
INDIRECT KICKS: All dead ball kicks (kick-ins, free kicks, kick-offs) are indirect
with exception of corner and penalty kicks.
GOAL KICKS: May be taken from any point on the end line and not in the goal box
area. However, goal kicks taken from the goal box are allowed for U6 Candy only.
KICK OFF: May be taken in any direction. It need not go forward.
PENALTY KICKS: Shall be awarded if, in the referee's opinion, a scoring opportunity
was nullified by the infraction. It is a direct kick taken from the top of the center circle
(15ft. line) on the offensive side of the midfield line with all other players behind the
midfield line. If a goal is not scored, the defense obtains possession with a goal kick.
Penalty kicks are not live balls.
PLAYER EJECTION (YELLOW/RED CARD): Referees have the right to eject a
player from the game for continual disobedience or as a result of an incident that warrants
sending the player off. RED CARD suspension = Rest of game PLUS next game. Teams
still play with 3 on the field after an ejection and do not have to play a man down.
GUEST PLAYERS: Guest players who are not signed up for the Milford Soccer
Summer 3v3 league are NOT PERMITTED. Only guest players on a current Milford
Soccer Summer 3v3 league roster can be used. Guest players are only permitted if a
player is playing in the same age group or playing “up” in an older age group. Guest
players are not allowed to play “down” in a younger age group unless permission is given
by the opposing coach after full disclosure. Male guest players are not allowed to play in

a female only division unless permission is given by the opposing coach after full
disclosure. Common sense should dictate.
PLAYING TIME: All players must play at least half the game unless there are 7 or
more players on a team. If there are 7 or more players, all players must receive close to
equal playing time as practicable.
SPORTSMANSHIP: Players, coaches and spectators are expected to act in the nature of
good sportsmanship at all times. Abuse of anyone will not be tolerated.
