CELEBRATE PSYCHOLOGY
BY THERESA FIORI
Last April the Psychology Department
held their 2 nd annual “Celebrate Psychology”
banquet. Each spring the department
is proud to honor their outstanding
students, faculty, and alumni. The Edinboro
chapter of Psi Chi and Psychology
Club fundraise throughout the year to offset
the cost of the dinner with activities
such as Café Mondays (see page 4). Held
in the south wing of Van Houten Dining
Hall, the university provides an excellent
dinner and atmosphere to celebrate psychology.
This past spring Edinboro recognized
the immense accomplishments from
their students and faculty in academics,
research, and community service. Students
presented research on cognition, behavioral
neuroscience, sexual abuse, creativity and
arts, close relationships, behavioral technology,
and aging. Faculty also recognized
students‟ accomplishments in community
service. Students donated much of their
time to NAMI, CEC, and The Ophelia Project.
In addition, students were recognized
for their participation within the department.
This year students were praised for
their involvement in the Compton Cup; a
miniature golf tournament between faculty
and staff. Their involvement in hosting a
movie night, College Bowl, and Brain
Awareness Day also tied together faculty
and students. Faculty were also recognized
for receiving thousands of dollars in grant
money to continue research. In addition,
our professors were awarded fun awards
such as “The Morning Person Award” –
Dr. Edwards, and “The Atlas Award” – Dr.
Legin-Bucell (Holding up the world of
Compton to students).
Alumni were and will be proud to
return to Edinboro. Bill Rothenbach („76)
returned to Celebrate Psychology this year
to enlighten us all on his accomplishments
as an Edinboro alumnus. He received his
M.A. at the University of Akron in industrial/organizational
psychology. This a
field relatively unrecognized by Edinboro
students. Industrial/organizational psychology
is the scientific study of the workplace.
Mr. Rothenbach has been able to
help corporations run smoothly for the past
two decades and is a true role model for
other Edinboro alumni, students, and staff.
This spring the Edinboro psychology
department will hold their 3 rd annual
Celebrate Psychology Banquet will be held
April 27 th , 2012. For further details please
feel free to contact Dr. Joyce Jagielo.
Clockwise from top left: Dr. Legin-Bucell introduces a panel of alumni, who talked about their various careers; Dr. Edwards receives the welldeserved
Morning Person Award from Kerry Schutte (see interview, next page); the Celebrate Psychology lunch and dinner were a hit as always;
Senior Michael Frank reflects on his training at Edinboro as he prepares for graduate school; Keynote speaker Bill Rothenbach ‘76 relates
his desire to give back to the program that helped start his successful, multi-faceted career.
