ITISM'12
0
Introduction:
In today's competitive market, the steel industry is constantly pressed for higher
productivity and quality besides ensuring safety, energy efficiency and
environmental standards. The need for continuous improvement in methods of
production & products to gain competitive advantage, by improving efficiencies,
reducing costs while meeting the market demand is always a prime concern. Tight
profit margins and customised products emphasise the need for automated
manufacturing. Automation and information technology has a critical and crucial
role to play in achieving these goals.
Steel makers always look out for innovations in the steel making technology. The
continuous advancement in the Automation & IT for iron & steel industry has
changed the way steel is made. Modern process control and production
management technologies play a big role in satisfying the demand to improve
product mix, save energy, reduce pollution and enhance competitive edge.
Reduction and control of CO
2
emission is a major issue being faced by steel industry.
Adoption of several energy efficient equipments can surely facilitate adherence to
tight environmental norms. Also, green technology, energy efficient control
systems, wireless technology, machine vision system, modeling & simulation,
automated tailor made manufacturing, computerised business process etc. have
undergone revolutionary changes.
The continuous research & development in the above areas has necessitated
exchange of technical information and experiences with implementation issues
among the steel and automation fraternity. Deliberation on challenges and
nd
opportunities that exists today is the need of hour. Keeping this in view, 2
International Conference AITISM'09 was held during December 9-11, 2009. The
Conference witnessed an overwhelming participation from India and overseas by
Steel Producers, Technologists, Academicians and Technology vendors.
rd
In this series the 3 Conference on “Automation & Information Technology in Iron &
Steel Making : Process Improvement and
Energy Efficiency (AITISM'12)” is being
organised by Computer Society of India
(CSI), Ranchi Chapter, in association with
R&D Centre for Iron & Steel (RDCIS), SAIL,
Ranchi, Centre for Engineering & Technology
(CET), SAIL, Ranchi and MECON Limited,
Ranchi during February 8-10, 2012.
