Message from Department Head IE Connections This year we are seeing growth in many parts of the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering including students, sponsored research and faculty. Undergraduate students come “into the major” at the start of their junior year, assuming they Paul Griffin satisfy certain requirements. In 2007, we had 92 entering students into IME. By last year, this number had risen to 174. This fall we will have a jump to more than 240 entering students, a 40 percent increase over last year. In addition, the number of incoming freshman that declared industrial engineering as their first choice of major is at an all-time high. Obviously we are excited about the interest and growth in our program, but this will also present some challenges for us in the near term. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality education for our students with a “hands-on” learning approach. Our focus is that undergrads “learn to be an engineer by being an engineer” and we will certainly maintain that teaching approach even with the increased number of students. Our research portfolio has also grown significantly this year. This includes increased funding for the Center for Service Enterprise Engineering directed by Dr. Terry Freisz and for the Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems directed by Dr. Harriet Black Nembhard. In addition, IME faculty are part of two joint research programs with the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). In March, the Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) funded a $4 million center in Innovative Metal Processing. The center will advance new technologies for highly engineered and critical metallic systems to the Department of Defense and U.S. industry. Drs. Sanjay Joshi and Tim Simpson are the primary IME faculty involved with the center. In addition, DARPA is funding a $50 million grant called iFAB Foundry; a program aimed at compressing at least five-fold the development timelines for new complex cyber-electro-mechanical systems such as military vehicles. Dr. Soundar Kumara, is the principal investigator for the College of Engineering and Dr. Mark Traband, who received his Ph.D. in IME and is with ARL, is the overall project director. Other IME faculty involved in this research include Drs. Sanjay Joshi, Christopher Saldana, Tim Simpson and Robert Voigt. We are excited about new research opportunities in manufacturing and service, and the funding helps us to support and educate our graduate students as well as impact industry technology and practice. With regards to faculty, I am happy to report that there will be two new members joining us in the fall. We will share more about them in the upcoming fall issue of IE Connections, but let me give a brief preview. Dr. Chia-Jung Chang received her Ph.D. from Georgia Tech and works in the area of system informatics and control as well as applied statistics. Applications of her work are in manufacturing, energy and health care. She has won several awards including a best paper award in the QSR section of INFORMS and is an IIE Gilbreth Fellow. Dr. Uday Shanbhag received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and has been on the faculty at the University of Illinois since 2006. He works in the area of optimization where he considers the complicating factors of nonlinearity, hierarchy, risk and uncertainty and dynamics. His primary applications have been in power systems and markets. Just last month he was awarded the extremely prestigious National Science Foundation Career Award. Dr. Shanbhag has also won the triennial A.W. Tucker Prize for outstanding Ph.D. dissertation and the Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of Illinois twice. We are thrilled to have both of these scholarly individuals become a part of our faculty. Unfortunately, I have the displeasure of announcing that Dr. Deborah Medeiros will be retiring this summer. Dr. Medeiros works in the area of systems simulation, facilities design and CAD/CAM. She has spent her entire academic career with the Marcus Department and over that time has won many awards, made numerous contributions to the profession and helped to make our department what it is today. More importantly, she has made a difference in the lives of our students that have been fortunate enough to have taken her classes or been her advisee. All of us will greatly miss having her as a colleague. Overall, it has been an exciting year for the Marcus Department. We are in the midst of implementing a significant change to our Ph.D. program and also currently in the middle of a review of our undergraduate curricula. We are also expanding our reach into new areas such as energy, medical imaging, and advanced analytics. I look forward to updating you about these changes and connections in future issues.
