Best and Fairest
Congratulations to our award winners at the Dick
Reynolds Medal Count on Monday night. Mark Lynch
(Premier Division), Mark DeSousa (Division 1) and
Tumay Hamza (Division 2) are all deserved winners of
their best and fairest awards.
Mark DeSousa is only the second person to win the
Hutchison Medal in the history of the award, with Clinton
Casey taking out the award in 1980-82 with Aberfeldie.
In another night for firsts, Cheyanne Bucard-Daniels
from Pascoe Vale won the inaugural EDFL Youth Girls
award ahead of Alexandra Quigley from Sunbury Lions.
Congratulations to these girls and to all players for
competing in the inaugural season of the Youth Girls
competition. Interest in the competition continues to
grow and it is hoped that more teams will be playing in
this competition in 2013.
Congratulations to all award winners from the night.
Division 1 Grand Final
This Sunday will feature an intriguing Division 1 Grand
Final between West Coburg and Airport West. The last
two games between these two teams have finished with
a 13 point margin to West Coburg and a 6 point margin
to Airport West.
Both teams enter the Grand Final full of confidence and
another close margin is expected.
Best of luck to both clubs.
Future Arrangements for Football in Country Victoria
Changes to the governance of the VCFL have recently
been announced. As of November 1, the VCFL will
effectively become a department within AFL Victoria
rather than operate as a separate entity.
One of the key announcements was the creations
of 13 regional commissions in 2013 to oversee the
governance of 82 country football leagues.
It is understood that these 13 commissions will represent
all stakeholders in the region, with the authority to
develop the strategic plan for the regions and make
independent local decisions.
The EDFL will be meeting with AFL Victoria this week to
receive feedback on club meetings held over the past
six weeks and will gain an insight into AFL Victoria’s
thoughts on the direction of football in Melbourne’s
Western and North West regions.

A LATE flurry of votes for Essendon Doutta Stars’
Mark Lynch captured the RS Reynolds nudges medal
on Monday night as the Essendon District Football
League premier division’s best and fairest player.
Lynch trailed Greenvale’s Rowan Nayna by eight
votes after round 14 in the count at the Moonee
Valley Racing Club but stormed home to take the
count with 26 votes to Nayna’s 24.
Lynch polled two votes each in rounds 15
(Strathmore) and 16 (Avondale Heights), moved
within one of Nayna with three votes against
Maribyrnong Park in round 17 and then claimed
victory with the last votes called on the night by
polling three against Keilor in the final round.
Nayna failed to poll a vote after round 14.
Strathmore’s Daniel Jones, runner-up to
Craigieburn’s Barry Brooks last season, claimed his
second consecutive podium finish with 18 votes in
third.
Lynch is the first Stars player to win the medal since
Aaron Ramsey tied with Strathmore’s Dale May in
2006.
Lynch was named in his own club’s best on seven
occasions, four of them first best, and booted 22
goals for the season.
Nayna was never named first best for Greenvale
during the home-and-away season but did
make the best in nine of his 16 appearances
and kicked 10 goals.
Lynch, 25, was raised in Tweed Heads
and played for Coolangatta, then QAFL
for the Southport Sharks before moving
to Victoria.
He did a pre-season with Essendon
Doutta Stars before playing with
Central Murray league outfit Nyah
Nyah West United.
But after a season travelling to
Swan Hill on a weekly basis he
decided to stay in Melbourne.
"There's no comparison compared
to the start of last year," Lynch said.
"Having a few more mates around the club, it's jelled
together and been a great year."
Lynch in his acceptance speech said he probably
played better in 2011.
"There were more good players in the team this year,
I don't know, maybe it's one of those things, I didn't
think I had a good enough year to win the league
medal."
Lynch's decision to move to Melbourne was one he
said was primarily football motivated.
But Nyah Nyah West United was a long way from his
then-St Kilda residence.
"I'd done three years of my apprenticeship with
plumbing and thought if I could finish it in Melbourne
I'd play footy in Victoria.
"A few of my mates Lance Oswald and (current
Stars teammate) Justin Kahlefeldt were moving so I
decided to do something different with my life."
Lynch shaved his head during the
season and laughed at the suggestion
it may have helped him win more
votes.
"The umpires must have liked it so I'll
keep it for next year...my girlfriend
won't be too happy though."
Essendon Doutta Stars coach
Marcus Barham said Lynch's
versatility was a key to him
standing out.
"I let him play his own game, he's
one of those players you can put it on and they
respond," Barham said.
"There were many times this year I whispered in
his ear that I need something and he does it.
"He tackles, he wins his own footy, he gets it
outside, he kicks goals and he can even go back if
needed.
"You look at a lot of the guys that play midfield and
they don't play many other positions but Mark can
play all over the ground.

"I reckon he had as good a year last year but you
get noticed when you're winning more games. Last
year was no different to this year and you know what
you're going to get."
Barham said Lynch had every right to leave after
the Stars recorded just one win and a draw in 2011
but his staying at the club was key to this year's
improvement and any future success.
"The hair was a bet to start off with and they ran with
it, beards, no hair, he's his own person and very laid
back. And he's a great winner of the medal."
Taylors Lakes’ Mark Desousa etched his name into
EDFL history by winning the Bill Hutchison (B-grade/
division 1) medal for the third time, having tied with
Pascoe Vale’s David James in 2009 and winning the
medal outright in 2010.
The Lions’ on-baller was a runaway winner with 33
votes from West Coburg’s Abdikane Fitaax on 21 and
Airport West’s Daniel Harris on 19.
Desousa joins Aberfeldie’s Clinton Casey, who won
the Hutchison medal in three consecutive years
1980-82, as the only three-time winners.
Hillside’s Tumay Hamza won the division 2 medal
with 15 votes from East Keilor’s Daniel Bonnici on 14.

West Coburg and Hadfield play off in their second straight
Under 18’s Division 1 Grand Final. Last year it was Darcy
Troy the hero kicking seven goals for the Burgers to record
a comfortable win over the team that had beat them in the
earlier Qualifying Final.
Come season 2012 not much has change with West Coburg
led by competition best and fairest winner Omar Saad, runner
up Ruairi Cleary and Calder Cannons player Omar Abdallah
they have once again asserted their dominance over Hadfield
throughout the season and also two weeks ago where they
touched the Hawks up by 100 points to advance to this
week’s decider.
If there were a betting market West Coburg would enter as
the shortest backed favorites in any Grand Final to be played
on Sunday and with good reason, considering their brilliance
but also the sporadic form of Hadfield.
The Hawks should welcome back Victorian Under 17 rugby
representatives brothers Callum and Xavier Toi but were lucky
to even be in this position after last weeks come from behind
five point win over Taylors Lakes.
Reserves
Airport West have been the team to beat all year, led by
former Hadfield captain Daniel Orr who continues to lead his
team with great distinction. They face the Glenroy 46ers who
recorded an impressive win over West Coburg last week, led
by Adam Barden who kicked five goals as midfield changing
half forward and also Callum Ronaldson, both of whom have
quality firsts football experience in 2012.
Airport West possess similar quality across the park and are
looking for back-to-back Division 1 Reserves Premierships.
Their two encounters with Glenroy this season have yielded
20 and 42 point victories.
Seniors
West Coburg and Airport West have been the two dominant
teams all season in the Division 1 senior competition and
it is only fitting that both are playing off for the chance of
premiership glory and also the opportunity to head up to
Premier Division football.
For West Coburg it has been a year of making a mends
for their loss to Pascoe Vale in last years decider and they
have given themselves every opportunity to do so with their
emphatic win two weeks ago against the Eagles allowing
Coach Neil Taylor said at EDFL Presentation night on Monday
that “we were bullied and intimidated last year and the boys
who played in that game have hopefully learned from that
experience and will make up for it Sunday.”
For Airport West they are in the similar position to Pascoe
Vale of 2011, the outright favorites to take out the premiership
all season and as a club are intent on getting back into the
Premier Division landscape.
Following the Qualifying Final two weeks ago, West Coburg’s
win all of a sudden through a spanner in the works and cast
some doubt over the surety of the Airport West hierarchy and
playing staff and made people stand up and take notice of
West Coburg’s credibility as a genuine premiership contender.
The return of captain Ricky McVeigh, centre half forward
Clayton Rogers and Western Jet Billy Iles was the impetus
the Eagles needed last week to spark them back into action
and a 111 point victory over Taylors Lakes suggests they have
unfinished business to sort out with the Burgers.
The midfield battle is going to be exceptional, the hard
nose nature approach of Rabee Haoucher, Robbie Hudson
and Marwan Abdulwahed up against Daniel Harris, Adam
Contessa, Guy Barbuto and co will be something to admire,
whilst the run and spread of the McVeigh brothers up against
runner up in the competition best and fairest Abdikane Fitaax
will go a long way to seeing who can outlast one another at
Windy Hill.
Two weeks ago the influence of Adrien Deluca and Marcus
Kenny was well quelled by the West Coburg defence,
however the return of Clayton Rogers gave the Eagles
another dimension and one that looked extremely dangerous
and has the potential the split the contest to pieces.
Wiggins and Fulton will get Smith and Grainger up the other
end but the question riding on the result is whether or not the
potent nature of the Eagles big men up front can be contained
by West Coburg.
As good as West Coburg were two weeks ago the Eagles
were equally as good in their Preliminary final, all is set up for
a classic Division 1 Grand Final played on the best stage in
EDFL football.

ENCOURAGE EAST KEILOR THE PLAYER WINS DIV 2 PREMIERSHIP
CELIK Aliaj was East Keilor’s hero as his last-minute
goal sealed an eight-point win against Moonee Valley
and the Essendon District Football League division 2
premiership on Saturday.
Some may have dubbed it the premiership no
team wanted to win after six teams were relegated
mid-season from division 1 to form the league’s
newest competition. But the grand final was fiercely
contested at Windy Hill in the 11.10 (76) to 10.8 (68)
result.
East Keilor opened a match-high 25-point lead
55 seconds into the final quarter when Nick Grigg
marked with the flight and goaled for the Cougars.
But Moonee Valley had the running in the final term,
albeit repeatedly breaking down across half forward
as they depserately chased the game.
Goals to Tom Wilson and Leigh Sporle gave the
Valley hope mid-way through the quarter, before
Dermott O’Connell’s long bomb closed the gap to
eight points after 21 minutes.
When Liam Johnson roved the spill and ran into an
open goal two minutes later it looked like the Valley,
two points down, might pull off the comeback.
But Aliaj would win the day as he unleashed an
ambitious shot on goal from 55m out in the 25th
minute.
It looked like Moonee Valley’s Reilly O’Brien, the
lone man behind the ball, would get back and spoil it
through for a point.
But somehow the ball floated enough to evade
O’Brien’s desperate outstretched hand and bounce
through to restore East Keilor’s eight-point lead.
Moonee Valley won the next centre clearance but
Mark Stevens could not mark inside forward 50m.
East Keilor would sweep the ball out of the backline
and the siren sounded with the ball in midfield.
Scores were level at quarter time after Moonee Valley
started faster with the first three goals.
The second term was an arm-wrestle with the margin
never greater than six points either way, before East
Keilor made its move in the third term.
Grigg started the third quarter with a 30m goal
from the boundary before Aliaj produced a miracle
snap from the forward pocket, followed by Vincent
Maddafari and Jake Linardon goals in time on to
make the margin 19 at the last change.
Michael Turner won the best-on-ground medal for
East Keilor while teammate Daniel Bonnici was
prolific in midfield.
Ned Wilson was full of run for Moonee Valley and his
team’s best in midfield, while ruckman Bevan Newell
was impressive going head-to-head in ruck against
East Keilor’s iron-man David Bruno.
East Keilor had changed coaches in May, with
Steve Kolyniuk replaced by his assistant Bill Asani,
six games before the mid-season relegation of the
bottom six in B-grade to form division 2.

The return of captain Ricky McVeigh, centre half
forward Clayton Rogers and Western Jet Billy Isles
was the inspiration Airport West needed as they
played themselves back into premiership winning
form.
A seven goal, eleven behinds first quarter with the
wind at Coburg City Oval was enough from Airport
West to put the game beyond doubt before the
quarter time siren in their preliminary final clash
against Taylors Lakes on Sunday.
Skipper McVeigh kicked four in the first
quarter to put his mark back on the
competition and give his side the spark they
needed to put a shock
loss again West Coburg last week behind
them.
Taylors Lakes were unable to get their
hands on the ball as Airport West
continued to pile on the scoreboard
pressure heading into half time 54 points
up with the result almost a foregone
conclusion.
The Lions continued to try and rough up
Daniel Harris as they did all day but the
Airport West superstar was not to be
deterred kicking a goal at the start of
the third quarter to continue to drive
the nail in the Taylors Lakes coffin.
There was a slight injury
concern to Jesse McVeigh
however during the third
quarter, with the youngest
McVeigh brother rolling
his ankle and taking
no further part
in the game.
The three quarter time margin was a whopping 96
points and with Marcus Kenny entering Sunday’s
Preliminary Final against Taylors Lakes sitting on 95
goals he was looking to emulate Scott Grainger’s
feat of becoming the second player this season to
kick 100 goals in the Division 1 competition focus
turned to trying to get their main man up forward his
hundredth major.
With an early goal in the quarter taking him to 99 the
scene was set.
Then Dave Corouzou had a free kick on a very
tight angle 15 meters out from goal then
received a 50 meter penalty to bring him to the
line. As he was walking in Kenny snuck around
the back received a handball and snapped truly
from ten meters out.

to celebrate with him
although there was to be no
crowd invasion.
His haul his season has
remarkably come from only 12
games with a personal best
of 21 against Jacana.
Kenny went on to kick six for the day to head into
this week’s Grand Final sitting on 101 with his
opposing full forward Grainger on 117.

PREMIER DIVISION FINALS REVIEW
Things didn't start as planned for Brodie Holland and
Maribyrnong Park on Saturday, but in the end the
Lions went home happy.
They ousted Aberfeldie from premiership contention
with a 10-point win at Coburg City Oval, finding form
when it matters at the pointy end of the season.
Holland was set to pull on the boots for what would
have been just his second match of the year but
tweaked a hamstring in the warm-up.
"Luckily we had an emergency ready to go who got a
call-up," the coach said.
It was an early setback, but one that did not hold
back the side during the match as it held a two-point
lead at quarter-time before breaking out to a 28-point
advantage at the main break.
(Aberfeldie) were the leading goal-kickers on the
ground, each booting five majors.
Kevin Whichello in the middle and Shylo Smith off
half-back were the best of the Lions, while David
Fanning and Damien Peverill impressed for the Abers.
Strathmore has just one more hurdle to clear in its bid
for premiership glory.
The Mores brought up win No.19 for the season
on Saturday with their nine-point semi-final victory
over Greenvale at Highgate Reserve ensuring their
unbeaten season rolled on.
"We're very excited," Strathmore coach Digby Morrell
said of the impending grand final.

Four goals to one from Aberfeldie in the third term got
it back into the game, but Maribyrnong Park was able
to hold on.
"We were extremely pleased with the efforts of the
players," Holland said.
"We were going in as underdogs having had an up
and down season. But we really got it right on the day
and I thought it was a well deserved win at the end of
the day."
While it was season over for the Abers, the Lions are
now set to face Greenvale in the preliminary final this
Saturday, with a spot in the grand final on the line.
"They've obviously got some injuries, so do we,"
Holland said. "But they're always fantastic games so
we're really looking forward to it.
"It's not going to be easy, but we feel we're up for the
challenge."

Just three teams remain in the race for the Premier Division
flag, with that number set to be cut to two following this
weekend's preliminary final.
Saturday's clash between Greenvale and Maribyrnong Park
should be a cracker, with a grand final berth against the allconquering
Strathmore on the line.
The Mores moved through to the season decider with a
nine-point victory over Greenvale last weekend, a game they
largely controlled after halftime to record their 19th win on
the trot.
While a minor blow for the Jets, Greenvale coach Anthony
Rock says his side is hungry to move through to the grand
final and turn the tables.
“They took their chances in front of goal and we didn't,” Rock
said of last weekend's match.
“We kicked 2.6 in the last quarter including three posters.
That's what it came down to.
“We would obviously just like to get another opportunity to
play Strathmore in a grand final, but what we need to do
is concentrate on this week. Maribyrnong has obviously
improved and we need to get the job done there.''
The Lions are a side that Greenvale has beaten twice this
season, but if the last match between the sides is anything to
go by, we should expect a close affair one way or another.
The Jets got the points in that Round 11 clash after getting
over the line by two points, but Maribyrnong Park coach
Brodie Holland has confidence his side's abilities this week.
“Finals are a different game. Sometimes the form doesn't
carry through from the home-and-away season and you've
just got to make it happen on the day,'' he said.
“They've obviously got some injuries, so do we. But they're
always fantastic games so we're really looking forward to
it. It's not going to be easy, but we feel we're up for the
challenge.''
The Lions head into the game in good finals form, having got
over the line in their semi-final last week by 10 points over
Aberfeldie.
Both teams are expected to head into this week's preliminary
final near full-strength.
