AT GROUND LEVEL . .
with MARC TURRI - E.D.F.L. General Manager
ROUND 1
Round 1
On behalf of the EDFL I welcome all players, officials and
supporters to another season of EDFL football.
It has been an exciting off-season for the EDFL with the
addition of two new clubs to the competition. East Sunbury
joins the EDFL from the neighbouring Riddell District Football
League. Still in its infancy, East Sunbury will be fielding
underage teams in the EDFL in season 2012 with a view to
forming a senior division of their club in the coming seasons.
The inclusion of East Sunbury allows the EDFL to establish
itself within the Sunbury region whilst further cementing our
foothold within the Hume City Council. Sunbury has grown by
11,000 people in the past 10 years and is predicted to grow
by a further 29,000 people over the next 20 years.
Lead by President Peter Methven, the club has shown
tremendous enthusiasm in making the switch to the EDFL
and we welcome the people of East Sunbury to our proud
competition.
Burnside Heights are a new club playing its inaugural
season of competitive football in 2012. The Burnside Heights
Bears will field U10s and U12s in season 2012 and with
the population growth in the eastern corridor of the Shire of
Melton, the club is destined to grow rapidly as the population
within the area continues to expand at a rapid rate. The
area has seen the creation of new suburbs such as Hillside,
Taylors Hill, Burnside and Caroline Springs and continues
to grow. The club is ideally located with a great venue, an
Auskick with strong numbers and a close working relationship
with the neighbouring Kororoit Creek Primary School which
continues to expand in student numbers.
Justin Peagram has done a tremendous job of creating the
club from the conceptualisation stage and it will be a proud
moment for the club when they play their first competitive
match for premiership points in round 1 of the junior division.
The EDFL has also made a name change to the
competitions. The Westpac A Grade competition will be
known as the Westpac Premier Division, the B Grade
will be known as Division 1 whilst a third tier of the senior
competition will be introduced in 2012, to be known as
Division 2 (commonly referred to over the preseason as C
Grade).
Supporters will notice that only the first 13 rounds of the
Division 1 competition have been fixtured. At the end of
13 rounds, the teams that finish in the top 8 will remain in
Division 1, whilst the teams that finish in the bottom six will
form the inaugural Division 2 competition.
The EDFL’s live Match of the Day Broadcast continues in
2012. Tune into 98.9 North West FM from 2.00pm every
Saturday for the live broadcast. The Round 1 broadcast
match will be the premiership flag unfurling for Strathmore
against Aberfeldie. Teo Pellizzeri returns to anchor the
broadcast and will be joined by experienced VFL caller Chris
Weaver, with Alex Spangaro joining the team as Boundary
Rider.
Congratulations to Keilor and Strathmore on the success that
was Good Friday. It is great to have clubs working together
and there is no doubt that this initiative will be beneficial for
these two clubs as the seasons progress.
Finally, congratulations to all club officials who have worked
tirelessly during the off-season to get their club ready for
round 1. All clubs enter the new season with renewed vigour,
enthusiasm and hope and I wish all Clubs, players and
officials the best for the 2012 season.
WESTPAC PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW
with Cody Winnell - Leader Newspaper
IT’S a great time of the year to be alive, ain’t it?The
chill’s back in the air signalling footy season’s here
again, and to blast out of the gates with a cliché:
What a big pre-season it has been in football.
Big-name recruits, retirements, ex-AFL champs
signing up for cameo appearances in Division 1 only
to be sacked before playing, and an actual gladiator
signalling his return to the battlefield by the name of
Kouta. Enter cliché two: “Wowee”.
Essendon District Football League fans have
questions aplenty: Can Strathmore rise again and
capture its eighth A Grade (Premier Division) flag
after last year’s resounding success? How much will
ex-Essendon power forward Scott Lucas be missed
down at Greenvale? Can Keilor, a perennial finalist for
as long as one can remember, return to September
action after a one-year hiatus? How will a hungry
Pascoe Vale Panthers outfit fare in its return to A
Grade? And with a top-four setup for finals, which are
the very good sides that will end up missing out?
While Round 1 will be run and won this Saturday,
with five tantalising clashes on offer across A Grade,
already we’ve seen a glimpse of what Strathmore has
to offer in its back-to-back bid.
The Mores comfortably accounted for Keilor in a
Good Friday blockbuster last weekend by 44 points.
This weekend, the Blues will be hoping to hit back
when they travel to JP Fawkner Reserve this
Saturday to take on the might of Oak Park.
Elsewhere, Pascoe Vale will be on the road to
Essendon Doutta Stars at Buckley Park, Greenvale
will host Avondale Heights at Greenvale Reserve,
Craigieburn will take on Maribyrnong Park at Highgate
Recreation Reserve, and Strathmore and Aberfeldie
will do battle at Lebanon Reserve. The first bounce
for all games is 2.15pm.
THE WHISPER
It’s been a massive build up to season 2012
with the inaugural Good Friday clash between
Keilor and Strathmore already decided with
Strathmore running out 42 point victors to
kick off their premiership defence. A great
initiative by both clubs and the league with
a crowd of over 2000 people watching the
action on a beautiful autumn day at Keilor with
the ground in picture perfect condition. It also
saw 15 year old Nick O’Kearney captain of
the all conquering EDFL Under 14 Victorian
Metropolitan Junior Championships side make
his debut for Keilor in Friday’s game.
Much of the talk in the off season has
surrounded the introduction of a third tier of
EDFL Footy which will be known as Division 2
once Rd 14 Hits. So what does this mean for
the EDFL structure? Following the Victorian
Amateur Football League’s lead the EDFL has
renamed A Grade as Premier Division, B Grade
as Division 1 and Division 2 will be around once
each Division 1 club plays each other once and
then the bottom six clubs will break away to
form this.
As always the EDFL is set to deliver block
buster games which put the league and it’s
respective club in the spotlight and gives it the
exposure it deserves. Such games include;
Premiership flag unveilings; Strathmore versus
Aberfeldie Rd 1 and Pascoe Vale versus Oak
Park in Round 2 which marks the return of two
Moreland Council heavyweights to Premier
Division, ANZAC Day clash between Avondale
Heights versus Aberfeldie and the Grand Final
replay between Strathmore and Oak Park will
also be one to watch.
Throughout the season in both Premier Division
and Division One supporters will have the
chance to see some former AFL stars strut
their stuff. Anthony Koutofidis headlines this
act lining up with Moonee Valley in this rounds
game against Keilor Park, Michael O’Loughlin
will don the white V in the ANZAC day clash
for Avondale Heights in a one off match for
the former Sydney superstar, whilst Daniel
Harris, Simon Wiggins, Darcy Daniher, Steven
Baker and Xavier Clarke will join the already
established former AFL players in the EDFL
like Damien Peverille, Hayden Skipworth,
Joel Reynolds, Lance Whitnall (now Glenroy
formerly Craigieburn) and Barry Brooks just to
name a few.
The general feel amongst EDFL community
is that Strathmore will be the ones to beat in
2012 adding former Strathmore junior and
SANFL star Andrew Horne and Collingwood
and Northern Bullant Adam Iacobucci to their
already impressive list. Aberfeldie are also the
ones to watch adding former Bomber and Tiger
Tom Hislop to it’s list and other former Bombers
Courtney Johns and Darcy Daniher will be
looking to overcome injury to have an impact
at either end of the field for Abbers, with their
need to make a mends for their sloppy second
half of last season which cost them a top four
spot. Greenvale and Maribyrnong Park will
also be around the mark as per usual but one
can’t help but feel that it may be a Strathmore,
Abbers one, two come seasons end.
In Division One, with the introduction of Division
Two looming interest is ripe around who will
go up and who will go down. Some Division
One clubs are fixed on making sure they
avoid the drop, which will be their number one
priority for the majority of the season. Will this
fear of falling mean that we will see improved
performances across the board with life or
death writing on every match?
Lance Whitnall has joined Glenroy as their
playing coach, which will cover the loss of
Aaron Kite to Myrtleford, while Westmeadows
have signed Balraj Singh a local footy goal
kicking machine to their list, however either
team will be hard pressed to compete with
Airport West who with Adam Contessa as
coach, Daniel Harris and Simon Wiggins on
board enter 2012 as premiership favourites.
One must not discount West Coburg and
Taylors Lakes, both who will be wanting to
make it back to Premier Division sooner rather
than later.
Looking forward to a wonderful 2012 season
and providing you with plenty of whispering
words.
BURNSIDE Heights will also join the EDFL ranks in 2012
starting their club and image from scratch
Much like Roxburgh Park and Meadows Heights of many
years back Burnside Heights will be a strictly junior club and
start their process from scratch as opposed to East Sunbury.
The EDFL's open offer for clubs to join its ranks may have
attracted interest from the Sunbury region, but it was the
Melton Shire that provided it’s first new arrival.
The Bears have been busy with getting their Auskick and
junior programs underway and aim to field three teams
across under-10s and under-12s next year. The club
hopes to grow into a senior outfit within a decade, aiming
to build their junior culture before heading into the senior
competitions.
Both the EDFL and Western Region Football League
were interested in the expansion club, but it was Burnside
Heights that ultimately decided on its home after hearing
presentations from both competitions.
Burnside Heights president Justin Peagram said small
differences between the EDFL and WRFL swayed the club.
"The parents felt that a two-year age gap in juniors compared
to one year was a preferred model," he said.
"Things like [EDFL] licensing fees are also lower than the
WRFL, so we had to look at it from a financial point of view.
"The grading of the club was also an important issue. With
eight divisions, there's that opportunity to be competitive with
our teams."
Peagram said being on the border of EDFL and WRFL
territory, but surrounded principally by WRFL clubs, gave the
opportunity to provide a point of difference.
"We're confident in fielding under-10s and under-12s next
year and maybe under-14s, which would be a bonus.
"We're blessed with having one of the best grounds going
around for juniors. Hillside (seniors) played there this year;
interleague has played there. It's a good place for community
sport and for building an identity."
EDFL general manager Marc Turri was understandably rapt
to have a new addition from an area his league considers to
be a major population growth corridor.
"We hoped the structures we've got for juniors would be seen
in a positive light and I'm pleased (Burnside Heights) viewed
it that way," Turri said.
"With the growth that's happening in this particular area, it
has the potential to become a powerful club."
It remains to be seen how successful Burnside Heights will
become however we must heap praise on the administrators
and supporters down at Burnside for all the hard work they
are putting in to get the club up on his feet and providing an
opportunity for it’s kids to enjoy and prosper as footballers
and people.
EAST SUNBURY
ENCOURAGE THE PLAYER SUPPORT THE GAME
THE Essendon District Football League
has a new northern outpost with the
recruitment of East Sunbury into its
junior ranks for the coming season.
Aspiring to field a senior team in the
EDFL's third division by next year,
the club, formerly known as Rolling
Meadows, is the first Sunbury presence
in the metropolitan competition.
Rolling Meadows Football Club was
established in 2000 after a number of successful years
holding Auskick clinics at the Goonawarra Primary School.
Rather than see players leave and try their luck at
established clubs such as Rupertswood, Sunbury Lions or
Sunbury Kangaroos, the administration decided to form a
club.
"We had a good nucleus of kids at that stage that all wanted
to keep playing together," Abdilla said.
"We came in at under-9s ... one of the biggest hurdles we
had was finding a venue to be our home."
Growth in the junior numbers peaked about three years ago,
while the introduction of under-18s at the start of the 2010
season did not lead to realistic prospects of Rolling Meadows
fielding a senior side in the RDFL.
Rolling Meadows took a vote on the club's future and had an
88 per cent return on a move to the EDFL.
East Sunbury will have juniors from under-10s up to under-
18s in its first EDFL season.
"There's certainly a few [ex-EDFL players] in the club who
say there is a difference in the standard," Methven said.
"But we've been fairly competitive in the second division in
RDFL so we'll be all right in the third division of EDFL.
"It's going to be one of those great unknowns."
Abdilla said: "Based on what the EDFL has told us, we're
best placed within that third division to be competitive."
Gardener said he doubted the players would find the
changes difficult to adjust to.
"Travel-wise it's about the same. These are kids who just
want to play the game and get out there and play.
"Regardless of the opposition, I don't think there will be any
problems adjusting to the new teams.
"I did take the time to go and watch some EDFL juniors last
season. They have some bigger and stronger boys playing
and that might take some adjustment."
Playing in the RDFL as the Rolling Meadows Thunder, the
club will be known as East Sunbury in line with the cricket
club that plays out of the same facility at Goonawarra.
"We'd like to be known as being a competitive club, and a
growing club.
"We have to aspire to become a division 1 EDFL club."
Methven said East Sunbury had every intention of fielding a
senior side in the EDFL's third division by next year.
"We've got the start of seniors with 15 players that go to
open age next year.
"We hope that the move to EDFL will attract players that
want to play firsts footy.
"The EDFL has given us an entry point to establish
ourselves, and I'm fairly confident we can be competitive in
that third division.
East Sunbury's administration is optimistic about its longterm
prospects as an EDFL club.
"We've got that point of difference. If [Sunbury Lions juniors]
had also come across to EDFL with us we wouldn't have had
that," Methven said.
"The population in our immediate area is set to explode and
we're ready to tap into that."
Obviously with already being an established club East
Sunbury has the upper hand in an administration sense to
Burnside Heights which will ultimately assist their ability to
form into a senior club.
We look forward to following the progress of these two new
clubs as they take their first steps in the EDFL and onwards
to greater success.
DIVISION 1 PREVIEW
with Cody Winnell - Leader Newspaper
THE battle for spots in the finals will be an exciting one in
EDFL Division 1, but just as intriguing will be the desperate
plight of clubs to avoid the dreaded drop zone.
At the end of Round 13 the bottom six sides in the 14-
team Division 1 competition will split to form a Division 2
competition for the first time in league history.
Should the ladder replicate the 2011 standings, Jacana,
Roxburgh Park, Moonee Valley, Hillside, Hadfield and
Glenroy would all become third-grade pioneers.
But all clubs want to head the other way, up to Premier
Division, and so footy fans won’t want to miss a second of
Division 1 action this year.
Moonee Valley has made headlines in the offseason after
announcing it would shelve plans to have Jason Akermanis
play a one-off game, replacing the outspoken ex-Brisbane
Lions and Western Bulldogs champion with a Carlton Football
Club hero in Anthony Koutoufides.
Kouta will line up for the Valleys in their Round 1 clash with
Keilor Park at Ormond Park this Saturday.
But the Devils will hold no fear first-up, with a new-look side
under a new coach in Rob McCluskey eager for early wins.
The former Tasmanian State League, AFL Queensland,
Western Region and Ballarat Football League coach knows
his stuff and hinted pre-season that about 10 new players
would run out in Round 1.
Kouta will pull a crowd to Ormond Park, but speaking of ex-
Blues, Lance Whitnall has taken over down at Glenroy.
Whitnall, who will be a playing-coach this season, will lead
his side into battle on the road to Airport West at Hansen
Reserve first-up.
But it won’t be easy. The Eagles have recruited boldly in the
summer, with Daniel Harris, Adam Contessa, Clayton Rogers
and Simon Wiggins all aboard.
East Keilor under coach Steve Kolyniuk will hope to play
finals again and will kick-start its season at home to Jacana.
Reports suggest the Jaguars have had a strong off-season,
but East will be favourites.
Former Essendon gun Alan Ezard’s first game as coach of
Hillside will be a twilight game at Hillside Reserve against
Roxburgh Park. Hillside is favourite here.
Elsewhere, Tullamarine will host Hadfield at Leo Dineen
Reserve, Taylors Lakes will play host to West Coburg at
Lionheart Reserve, and Westmeadows will tackle Northern
Saints at Willowbrook Reserve.
FORMER PLAYERS DRAFTED TO AFL
Brandon Ellis and Michael Talia are former EDFL junior players for their respective clubs and have both been a key part of the
Calder Cannons program before being drafted.
Brandon played his junior football with West Coburg and moved through the junior ranks before being picked up with Pick 15
in the 2011 National Draft by the Richmond Football Club, making his debut in Round 1 of this season against Carlton in front
of a blockbuster MCG crowd, slotting into their backline.
Michael Talia has joined his older brother Daniel who is at Adelaide on an AFL after being drafted by the Western Bulldogs
at Pick 39 and also joins the club where his grandfather Harvey Stevens played in the 1954 Premiership team. Michael was
a Greenvale Football Club junior player and excelled at Assumption College in the football program there. Touted as a key
position player, Talia looks like having a promising career as a bulldog.
We congratulate both boys on their induction into the AFL and look forward to them progressing and representing the EDFL
with distinction.
“Congratulations to former EDFL players Brandon Ellis – West Coburg F.C
and Michael Talia – Greenvale F.C on being drafted into the AFL”
BRENDAN HOSKING - ONE TO WATCH
ENCOURAGE THE PLAYER SUPPORT THE GAME
The next time you roar ‘‘ball!’’
at the footy there’s a chance
the man answering your pleas
for a free kick will be Brendan
Hosking.
The 22-year-old former
Essendon District Football
League junior and umpire is on
the verge of his AFL debut after
earning a call-up to the national
panel of AFL umpires.
Hosking sat on the boundary
for his third AFL game as an
emergency umpire at the North
Melbourne v-GWS Giants match in Tasmania on Sunday.
After officiating in last year’s VFL grand final and a number
of NAB Cup matches during the AFL pre-season, Hosking
is eagerly anticipating his first assignment to be one of the
three field umpires in a home and away game.
Hosking’s fitness and running ability has put him on the fast
track to taking control of AFL games. After three years in the
VFL, his impressive training and 5000m times caught the eye
of AFL umpires director Jeff Gieschen.
The call-up to the highest level marks a steady rise for
Hosking from boundary umpire in the EDFL in 2003, to field
umpire in 2005, to the VFL development squad in 2009.
Hosking started out as a footballer in under-10s at Taylors
Lakes, playing and umpiring in tandem until he finished his
under-16s top-age year at Keilor.
‘‘I was a bit smaller than other guys and getting knocked
around in under-16s,’’ Hosking said.
‘‘I decided to concentrate on my umpiring rather than keep
playing (under-18s) footy and get knocked out of every
game.
‘‘I love the game and miss playing it from time to time ...
to still be a part of the game is really good and the highest
level, it’s unreal.’’
Hosking won the 2008 golden whistle in the EDFL before
being invited to the VFL development squad, going on to
officiate a number of senior games through the 2009-11
seasons.
His first televised VFL game was a big landmark in realising
what it would take to cut it at a higher level.
‘‘I remember umpiring really poorly in my third senior VFL
game.
‘‘It was a TV game and it was a big eye opener that I had to
step it up and be the best I can.
‘‘I was still quite young and lacked a bit of confidence, but
due to the coaching I got through the VFL with Kevin Mitchell
and Adam Davis. Those two guys helped me with a lot of
things.’’
A solid 2011 season with the whistle snowballed into a
strong finals series showing for Hosking, almost catching
him by surprise that he was in charge of the grand final.
After running the 5000m time trial in 17:13, well inside the
AFL umpire benchmark of 18:45, the ambition of joining AFL
ranks became a reality.
Hosking got his first crack at AFL level in the NAB Cup triseries
between Geelong, St Kilda and Sydney and was also
in charge of North Melbourne’s match against the Western
Bulldogs.
‘‘It was an absolute thrill to receive the call from Jeff
(Gieschen) and Rowan (Sawers).
‘‘(AFL) players are great players, but nothing changes; you
just have to umpire as you see it.’’
Running and positioning remain the two big focuses for AFL
umpires’ training, while Hosking is optimistic about his ability
to handle the mental side of things.
‘‘You have to be tough-skinned. My family and friends have
been very supportive but after every decision, regardless
of whether I’m umpiring or not, they’re coming to me for an
explanation.
‘‘In the two years I did on the VFL senior list I’d go to AFL
games and observe umpires, because they’re miked up you
can listen in, be able to look at the way they work together
and communicate.’’
Hosking works as a strength and conditioning coach in
Cairnlea fitness club Run With Me.
He will wear the number 16 shirt this season, vacated by Jeff
Dalgleish, who has taken the number seven that formerly
belonged to umpiring games record holder Hayden Kennedy.
Mathew Tomkins joins Hosking as a former EDFL umpire
in the AFL this season. He was called up to the national
boundary umpire pool, and was one of the four officiating
in the round one match between North Melbourne and
Essendon. Other EDFL umpiring graduates heading to VFL
level this season are trio Tom Christie, Adam Havelburg and
James Davey.
