President’s Message News and views from the UWPIAA President Stuart Shepherd (78E) As I write, it’s 6:30 a.m. and I’m sitting by the pool at the Tucson Hilton El Conquistador Hotel watching the sun rise over the Catalina Mountains. I can hear quail in all directions calling the desert to awake for another beautiful day in the Ole Pueblo. Rajean and I are in Tucson to meet with the Tucson host committee, who are busy coordinating the 2004 UWPIAA Reunion. We are joined by several members of the board of governors who are here to assist in the planning. It has been an amazing two days, not only because of the breathtaking reunion location, but the energy, the enthusiasm, the expertise of the Tucson host committee. What an incredible group of alumni! The executive team includes Mia Hansen, Tim Polito, Pamela Traficanti and Brennan Evans. Together with 25 other alumni, they have spent hours and hours researching locations, prices, transportation and the many other issues included in setting up a reunion. They are creating a reunion you won't want to miss! It is a privilege to serve as president of the UWP International Alumni Association. The last four years serving as treasurer have provided excellent training. In fact, the last four years have really been years of tremendous growth for the Association. In that time, UWP closed its operation. Because the Association had been funded by UWP, we really had to get our act together if we were going to survive. We did get our act together and we can all be proud of the organization, the financial position and the leadership. We have produced outstanding reunions, and established the UWPIAA web site and Online Community. I also look forward with great pride in the new members of the board of governors we have recruited to provide leadership for the next several years. It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated, talented group of alumni. I don’t know when they sleep! It doesn’t seem to matter whether I email at midnight, 4:00 pm or 4:00 am ... someone is always there to provide the information needed. There are several things I’d like to ask you to do this year. Please register on the Online Community (www.memberconnections.com/olc/ pub/UPW) and encourage everyone in your cast to register also. As you visit with alumni in your casts, ask them whether they receive UpBeat. If they don’t, that's a good indication that we don't have an updated address. We are missing 4,000 alumni and need your help in locating them. Visit the UWP web site (www.upwithpeople.org) and learn about the new WorldSmart program that will begin in August 2004. Exciting things are happening at UWP and you’ll want to keep up on the latest developments as we all look forward to welcoming new students to the program. Your support enables Stuart Shepherd the Association to send you UpBeat four times a year and maintain the UWPIAA web site (www.uwpiaa.org) and Online Community. It costs $40,000 annually to provide these three communication tools. If we each contributed US$25 we could cover these important expenses of keeping in touch with each other. The most personal part of serving as president is the honor of meeting, working and communicating with alumni from all over the world. I look forward to reading your emails and hope you will keep in touch. If this is a reunion year, I look forward to seeing you in Tucson. If it's not a reunion year, come anyway. B UP EAT UpBeat is published quarterly by the Up with People International Alumni Association. Editorial Guidelines UpBeat welcomes your articles, photos and story ideas on the huge array of subjects that affect alumni around the world. Please be aware, however, that we have a limited amount of space available in each issue of UpBeat. For this reason, we often cut, revise or reformat original material to make it fit the space available. We offer the following editorial hints and guidelines: • Focus, focus, focus. Make sure that every sentence of your article is relevant to the topic at hand. • Be concise. Say what you want to say in the fewest possible words. Try to avoid long introductory phrases and clichés which can bog down your text. • Make your article title specific to the story. UpBeat may change it, but if your original title clearly points to the content of your article, it will be a lot easier for us to track during the editing process. • The length of the article should be: for short articles on events or programs: 250-500 words (5-6 paragraphs of 2-3 sentences each); for long articles, profiles, human interest stories: 400-1,000 words (3/4 page to 2 pages single spaced with one-inch margins). Liz Cotter Schlax (90B) Admissions After her student year, Liz traveled on Education staff for 94A and 95A. She lives in the Raleigh- Durham, North Carolina, area of the U.S. and is in the management training program at John Deere. As admissions chairperson, Liz is thrilled to be working closely with UWP’s vice president for enrollment on ways to involve alumni in recruiting and enrolling UWP’s future. Greg Shockey (88E) Alumni Products Greg is a graduate of Indiana University. He currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he works as a tour director for On Stage Productions. Greg wanted to participate in the board of governors because he says it will allow him to finally give something back to UWP. As alumni products chairperson, Greg is responsible for researching and developing marketing and affiliation programs for alumni through the UWPIAA. Karen Isaak Valdez (78A) Reunions Karen is the cast rep for 78A and has been a flight attendant for United Airlines for 18 years based in Denver, Colorado. She has also volunteered extensively with the Junior League of Denver. Karen has served many years on the BOG, first as the North American rep, then the Reunion chair until 2001. She reports she is now refreshed and ready to help Tucson have a great event. Angie Morey (94E) Alumni Contacts Angie is not new to the BOG, but she has agreed to take on a completely new appointed position. Her new role on the board is to find all of our “lost” alumni. She says she’s excited to be in a position where she can help alumni get reconnected with the Association and maybe even with each other. Angie currently lives in East Boston, Massachusetts, and works for Boston UP BEAT Introducing the New BOG Members University in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Jin Kawamura (98C) Asia-Pacific Rep After traveling as a cast member, Jin was also Japan event coordinator for 99D, and North American event coordinator in 2000. He now lives in Tokyo, Japan, and works for an event production company producing corporate events overseas. Jin wanted to be the Asia-Pacific rep because he thought there are so many things we can do as UWP alumni if we get together regionally. Jin would like anyone who lives in the region and has suggestions to email him. Claudia Vos (95C) Europe/Mid-East/Africa Rep Claudia lives in Hertogenbosch, in the south of The Netherlands. Before being chosen as the next EMEA rep, Claudia was on the board of the Dutch alumni association, AlumNet, from 1998 until 2002. She says that working with the Dutch alumni club gave her great pleasure, so when her four-year term was over, she decided to apply for the European rep position with the UWPIAA. She soon discovered that her region had been expanded to include Africa and the Mid-East as well. Johnny Quintana (90E) North American Rep Johnny Q, as he’s known, is from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he works for Musical Theatre Southwest as their events coordinator and educational director for the Center for Theatre. He is also a full-time student at the College of Santa Fe studying Business Administration in the Arts. Johnny Q is excited to be joining the BOG as the new North American rep. Remco Voogd (97C) 1996-2000 Era Rep Remco has stayed in close touch with UWP and the UWPIAA over the years, first as an alumni interviewer, then as his cast’s mailing list moderator and webmaster. He became active in the Dutch Alumni Association (AlumNet) and is also the 97C cast rep and a key member of the UWPIAA Web Team. He lives in Eerbeek, The Netherlands, and works for an insurance company as a claims handler. Christine Geissler (91B) 1991-1995 Era Rep Christine stayed on with UWP as education coordinator for 92B and 93B after her student year. She lives in Frankfurt, Germany, where she works for Lufthansa German Airlines in corporate human resources. Christine applied for the era rep position because of a strong belief in the potential that UWP alumni have. If you traveled between 1991 and 1995, Christine would love to hear your suggestions and requests! Tania Massa (90A), 1986-1990 Era Rep Tania lives in Stoughton, Massachusetts, and is employed as a dispatcher for the Massachusetts State Police as well as a personal care attendant for a gifted and brilliant handicapped young man. Among other reasons, Tania wanted to become an era rep to make sure alumni have every opportunity to continue their relationships with their cast members and forge new friendships with other alumni. Lissy Castillo (78C), 1976-1980 Era Rep After her cast year, Lissy was employed by UWP until 1989 as promotion manager and tour manager, both in the office and on the road. She now lives in Mexico City and is a partner and executive producer with a production company. Lissy already has many goals as an era rep, including increasing the number of alumni from her era at reunions and helping casts keep better contact records. Dave Martin (68/69/70C) 1965-1970 Era Rep Besides traveling in Cast C, Dave also spent part of 1970 with the Smithfields. Dave works as a desktop publisher, business manager and manufacturer of notebooks and folders. He serves on the local Chamber of Commerce and Board of Education. He has also done the layout and pre-press work for UpBeat since 1994. Dave wanted to serve on the BOG because “I have been associated with some amazing people in the time I have spent working on UpBeat and I want to do what I can to help keep the organization and (more importantly) the spirit alive.” Dave lives in Sunbury, Ohio.
