European Alumni Keep the Spirit Alive
German Alumni Meet in Trier
by Birgitta Holtrup (93C) Cologne, Germany
t
he German Alumni Club
held its 2002 annual meeting
this past October in the
beautiful city of Trier. Attended by
over 150 alumni, some of them from
outside Germany, the meeting was
very successful.
After a Halloween night on the
town, some of the group had an
opportunity to go on a sightseeing
tour of the historic city the next day.
Others visited an old people’s home
to play games and make Christmas
cards. After UWP had ceased
operations, the German Alumni
Club decided to add a community
service/involvement activity such as
this to every meeting in order to
keep the UWP spirit alive.
The group also enjoyed an
interesting talk given by Hiro
Nishimura (87B) about the plans and
future of UWP. The day ended with
a special wine tasting event arranged
by the “advance team” in the vault of
an old winery.
The next day, Saturday, was the
day of the General Assembly ( JHV)
and meeting of all members (MV) of
the German Alumni Club. Many
topics were discussed and three
board members elected. The day’s
meetings were concluded with talks
by UWPIAA Information Systems
committee chair Kimmo Vallema
(90D) and UWPIAA vice president
Coleen Scott (93A), who both gave
interesting insights into the work of
the UWPIAA.
The final day ended with a big
celebration. An alumni band playing
at this party has become a tradition
for the German Alumni Meeting
over the past years and went until
early morning. On Sunday, some
people were able to meet for a
brunch while others had to be on
their way home. A wonderful
weekend with meeting old friends
and getting to know new ones was
over.
The next German Alumni Meet-
ing will take place from Thursday to
Saturday, October 2–5, 2003, in the
Youth Hostel Possenhofen in 82343
Poecking (close to Munich, Switzer-
Swiss Meet in Appenzellerland
by Karin Schönenberger-Scharpf (89E), Unterägeri, Switzerland
t
he UWPSAA General
Assembly took place the
weekend of October 18,
2002, at the Hotel Krone in Swiss
Appenzellerland. The weather was
rainy, cool and misty, but no spirits
were dampened.
In addition to conducting official
business on Saturday, the attendees
were also given an introduction to
the Appenzeller alphorn, which a
few “Uppies” even tried to play
themselves. Later, Tamara Kiener
(94B) and Walter Belcher (89C)
. . . there are plenty of smiles!
land, Austria, Liechtenstein, Czech
Republic and Italy). For further information,
please contact Christina
Schempp (90D) at cschempp@gmx.net.
When alums get together . . .
played several songs, one of which
we all knew, so we joined in and sang
out loud — complete with swingclaps!
On Sunday, we held our traditional
Olympic games. The group
was split into two teams and had a
lot of fun. There was something on
the agenda for everyone: guessing
songs, a Willisauer-Ringli relay or
the eating of ice cold apples. In spite
of the bad weather, the weekend was
a great success.
Special thanks to everyone who
helped organize the event and we
look forward to next year’s General
Assembly Weekend already.
President’s Message
The Opportunity to Serve
News and views from the UWPIAA President Bill Becker (87A)
first, let me publicly express
my gratitude to Coleen Scott
and Stu Shepherd for stepping
forward last August while I fulfilled
a professional opportunity. The
association was in good hands while
they managed the day to day operations,
including a board meeting in
Mexico, without missing a beat. My
sincere thanks go to Coleen, Stu, the
officers and the entire board.
This experience reminds me of
the importance of the many volunteer
positions available within the
alumni community. The association
is certainly bigger than any one
person, and it is our responsibility to
ensure that our current leaders are
assisted, surrounded and eventually
succeeded by qualified, committed
and capable individuals.
These are exciting times for the
UWPIAA. This summer, the
association will come under new
leadership with Stu Shepherd as
president. We will hold our third
reunion completely sponsored,
organized and managed by the
UWPIAA and alumni volunteers, as
well as continue planning for reunions
in 2004 and 2005. The new
online community is opening doors
for alumni to reconnect and network,
and the opportunities to expand the
uses of our website to benefit alumni
seem endless. Thanks to many
generous alumni, the association’s
financial position has strengthened
over the past two years, and we now
have some more flexibility to discuss
and try new ideas that will best serve
the alumni community in the
coming years.
Finally, we have a renewed
opportunity to work with UWP. The
new WorldSmart program is going
to need the support of alumni to get
2 spring ‘o3
the program off the ground; recruiting
new students, opening doors to
university partnerships and hosting
students are just some ways alumni
can support the new program. Our
recent alumni survey returned an
overwhelming mandate that the
UWPIAA board be integrally
involved with the renewal of UWP
— and we are fulfilling that role.
We continue to need alumni to
serve as committee members,
chapter/club leaders, cast reps and on
the board of governors itself. Over
250 alumni are currently filling these
roles, and are giving their time,
creativity and resources to maintain
the legacy of the UWP experience.
Volunteers make this association
what it is, and that reality will
continue in the coming years. We
need people who are willing to make
UWPIAA a priority in their lives for
their term of service, who can fulfill
the responsibilities as outlined for
each position and who are interested
in advancing the interests of alumni
through the UWPIAA. Service is
always voluntary, and depending on
the position in which you are interested,
travel expenses to meetings are
UPB
EAT
at your own cost.
If you are
interested in
serving on the
board of gover- Bill Becker
nors, on one of
the board’s standing or special
committees or want to get involved
regionally, please contact a board
member (listed to the side of this
letter). We would like to expand the
international representation on the
board, so non-U. S. alumni are
especially encouraged to consider
getting involved. It is a great opportunity
to serve and to maintain a
connection with the greater UWP
community outside of your own cast.
I look forward to seeing many
people this summer at the reunion in
Boston. The reunion is a wonderful
opportunity to reconnect with dear
friends, make new connections and
recharge your batteries with the
energy in a room filled with Uppies.
You don’t want to miss it. See you
there.
Yours,
Editorial Guidelines
UpBeat welcomes your articles, photos
and story ideas on the huge array of subjects
that affect alumni around the world. Please
be aware, however, that we have a limited
amount of space available in each issue of
UpBeat. For this reason, we often cut, revise
or reformat original material to make it fit
the space available.
We offer the following editorial hints and
guidelines:
• Focus, focus, focus. Make sure that every
sentence of your article is relevant to the topic
at hand.
• Be concise. Say what you want to say in the
fewest possible words. Try to avoid long
introductory phrases and clichés which can
bog down your text.
• Make your article title specific to the story.
UpBeat may change it, but if your
original title clearly points to the content of
your article, it will be a lot easier for us to
track during the editing process.
• The length of the article should be: for short
articles on events or programs: 250-500
words (5-6 paragraphs of 2-3 sentences
each); for long articles, profiles, human
interest stories: 400-1,000 words (3/4 page
to 2 pages single spaced with one-inch
margins).
Getting your article to us ...
All articles and story ideas should be sent
to Cheryl Alspach (95A), UpBeat Coordinator.
Whenever possible, we ask that you e-mail your
article or idea. Make it part of your
e-mail message, since not all software is easily
converted from one format to another. If you
are not on-line, you can mail your article to
Cheryl, or call her with your idea. To submit an
mMost of us look ahead
only a few months in
planning our lives. Some
of us prefer to live day to day. But Jeff
Hoag and Hiro Nishimura (87B),
CEO and COO of UWP, respectively,
are looking all the way to fall
2004 — the tentative launch date for
the WorldSmart Leadership
Program. The program is rapidly
gaining momentum as Jeff and Hiro
secure partner universities and host
communities, begin to recruit potential
students and establish the
working aspects of the program.
With prudence in mind, Jeff and
Hiro are systematically rebuilding the
company to last and will not launch
the program until the financing and
all elements of the business are
soundly in place.
Diversity a Goal
Enrollment plans for
WorldSmart continue to move
forward: There has been a terrific
response from prospective students
who have registered on the web site.
Jeff and Hiro are focusing on developing
cultural diversity in the program.
Their goal is to build a program
that will benefit many regions
of the world from the outset. Initial
plans are for programs to go to Japan,
Europe and North America. Students
can expect to participate with
other young people from 20 different
countries.
To help recruit students, Hiro
attended the German Alumni Club
meeting last October and the European
Alumni Meeting in Stockholm,
Sweden, in February, and the Japanese
Alumni Club meeting in March,
speaking with alumni and potential
students. There are also international
students to draw from who wanted to
travel in 2001. The final source of
enough international students to
attain the desired diversity is you, the
alumni. Both U.S. and non-U.S.
alumni will be very valuable in
helping develop the enrollment for
the initial program in fall 2004 and
for subsequent semesters (see “Opportunities
to Help,” page 12).
Partners in Global Leadership
Currently UWP has established
partnerships with Carroll College in
Waukesha, Wisconsin; Hawaii
Pacific University in Honolulu,
UPB
EAT
WorldSmart: The Beat Goes On
by Sheila Walsh Dettloff (84D), Communications Chair, Macomb, Michigan
Hawaii; and the University of
Denver in Denver, Colorado. Jeff
and Hiro are in discussions with the
University of Arizona and several
other potential partner universities
throughout the world. The process is
expected to take longer outside the
U.S. due to the differences in school
systems.
Enrolling through a partner
university carries advantages for the
student. The university can help with
financial aid and will award academic
credits for participation in
WorldSmart. Young people can
also enroll independent of a partner
university. Anyone interested in
studying abroad can consider the
program. With a proposed age range
of 18-26, WorldSmart could even be
a practicum for a graduate program.
UWP is developing a proprietary
WorldSmart Leadership curriculum
to develop global leaders. It will
integrate all of the unique learning
experiences of the program and
consist of over 300 classroom-style
group learning exercises taught by
qualified educators who will travel
with the group.
Community Connections
As in the past, UWP is building
relationships with communities and
potential host families throughout
the world. The goal is to establish
long-term partnerships with 40
European, Asian and North American
communities . The students and
staff will visit each community for
one week on their learning tour.
While they are learning, they will
also volunteer for activities that meet
the needs of that community.
Music Is the Universal Language
And it’s also the universal
question among alumni. Just what
will the musical component of
WorldSmart be? With the planned
launch of WorldSmart approximately
17 months away, the musical
aspect of the show continues to be in
development.
Jeff and Hiro have been talking
to several key production personnel
previously involved with UWP, from
the creative team to management. In
short, they are focusing on two goals
for the musical element, which is
intended to be an interactive community
event, not simply a perfor-
mance. Music will
be used to contribute
to student
learning and as a
Jeff
primary tool for
communication,
particularly in areas
where language is a
barrier. It will not be
a source of revenue.
While there are still
Hiro
many details to be
decided, it’s safe to say you can
expect to hear some familiar UWP
music in WorldSmart host communities
in the future.
Focused Leadership
Over the past few months, there
have been some major changes in the
composition of the UWP board of
directors. One very large board has
become four smaller groups, each
with a distinct purpose. The formal
UWP board of directors now
consists of 16 members, four of
whom are new to the group. The
board of directors has the legal
responsibility to oversee the policies
and finances of the organization.
The UWP international advisory
board is made up of seven people
who serve as valuable advisors to the
board of directors. This group will
grow in number in the coming
months. The advisory board helps in
many ways, but does not have any
legal responsibility for the organization.
Additionally, there is an honorary
lifetime board of directors
consisting of 16 people who are
longtime great supporters of the
organization, and another group
made up of chairmen emeriti: Dr. J.
Blanton Belk, chairman emeritus,
UWP, and Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda,
chairman emeritus, UWP Japan. Dr.
Belk and Dr. Toyoda serve as senior
advisors to UWP.
Another important milestone is
the exchange of senior management
between the boards of UWP and the
UWPIAA — a step which strengthens
the relationship between the two
organizations. Jeff Hoag will serve
on the UWPIAA BOG and Bill
Becker (87A), president of the
UWPIAA, serves on the UWP
board of directors. Stu Shepherd
(78E), president-elect of the
UWPIAA, holds a position on the
UWP international advisory board.
UPB
EAT
Denver Alumni Baby Boom
by Cheryl Alspach (95A), UpBeat Coordinator, Denver, Colorado
when UWP closed in
December of 2000, we
not only lost an organization
that was close to our hearts,
but many of us working in the
Denver office also lost our jobs. But
as my fellow officemates and I were
closing down the physical structure
of UWP, the most often expressed
concern wasn’t “How am I going to
pay my bills without a job?” but
rather, “What would happen to the
group?”
We were a family and we wondered
what would happen when we
wouldn’t be seeing each other on a
daily basis. Over the next two years,
the answer to that question became
pointedly clear — one thing our
family would become was bigger.
Our family expanded, literally. I
guess when you have a bunch of
alumni with a whole lot more time
on their hands … well, you’ll see
where I’m going with this.
Denver has become the “birthplace”
of a new generation of UWP
students. As I was researching for
this article, I found at least 13 new
babies born to Denver-based UWP
former office and road staff since
December of 2000. (Do the math.
That averages one new baby every 56
days!)
The momentum started when
Daniel Masami Nishimura joined
our clan on April 16, 2001, just four
months after UWP closed its doors.
His parents, Hiro Nishimura (87B),
current COO of UWP, and Kristin
(Ueland )Nishimura (90E) keep quite
busy with Daniel and his older
brother, Markus Yuki. Their biggest
challenge with the boys was at their
birth. Hiro says, “It was very difficult
to decide the names for both sons
since over 1,000 names already had
faces attached to them from our
experiences with our former students
and staff!”
David “DB” Burton (94E) and
Ann-Michelle (Walker) Burton (91A)
continued the trend with the birth of
their son, Dylan Walker Burton
New Era Reps Needed
july 2003 is a month of change
for the UWPIAA Board of
Governors (BOG). Every two
years, some members rotate off the
BOG to make room for new alumni
who are interested in serving the
UWPIAA.
This July, four Era Representative
positions will be vacant. Era
Reps represent the interests of
alumni who traveled in a given fiveyear
time period — for example,
there is an Era Rep for casts that
traveled from 1965 to 1970, another
for casts that traveled between 1971
and 1976, etc. There are a total of
seven Era Reps, and they are essential
players in keeping our 18,000
alumni together.
Era Reps are elected every two
years at reunion by the cast representatives
of their era. You don’t have to
attend the reunion to stand for
election, but you do need to submit a
written one-page biography and
explain why you would like to be an
started to grow in 2002. It was about
this time that a few of us started to
realize we were no longer going to
Denver UWP parties like we used to,
we were now all going to baby
showers!
The world didn’t know what hit
Era Rep. This document will be
given to the cast reps at the reunion
so that they can make an informed
choice when they vote. You must be
an alumnus/a of a cast that falls
within the era you wish to represent.
Responsibilities include:
• Representing the approximately
25 casts in your era, working with
the cast reps and helping to identify
and recruit new cast reps if any cast
is without one
• Providing a direct link between
casts and the UWPIAA, maintaining
regular communications with all
cast reps, forwarding information to
the cast reps and bringing your era’s
issues and concerns to the BOG
• Actively promoting reunion to
all casts in your era
• Attending and participating in
BOG meetings (including reunion),
UWPIAA activities and other
special projects
Being a member of the BOG is
hard work — everyone is a volunteer
it when Madelene Gledhill
Kleinhans decided to arrive on
Valentine’s Day 2002. The daughter
of Sarah (Clarke) Kleinhans (88C)
and her husband Kip, Madelene
practically came out of the womb
wearing mini skirts and animal
prints, just like her mom!
February 28, 2002, brought
another “Maddy” – this time,
Madeline Marie Schmidt, daughter
of Paula (Gaughan) Schmidt (88E)
and Brian Schmidt (89C). Paula says,
“Hooray for ‘older’ moms!”
Gabriel Adalbert Mahoney,
named after his grandfather, joined
sister Brynn (5) and Anna (3), on
April 10, 2002. The busy household
is led by parents Pete and Nancy
(Whorowski) Mahoney (E92).
April showers brought with
them Jordan Elizabeth Mygatt on
April 16, 2002. Her parents, Jennifer
(Smith) Mygatt (88B) and Brian
Mygatt (85B) couldn’t be prouder of
their little girl. Jen says, “We look
forward to all of the babies growing
up together!”
Ashley Boozer (83A) and Mia
See Baby Boom on page 12
— but the rewards are tremendous.
In addition to making a difference to
18,000 alumni worldwide and being
at the heart of the action when it
comes to alumni news and special
events, BOG members have the
added benefit of forming a whole
new set of lifelong friendships.
The following Era Rep positions
are vacant for the 2003–2005 term:
• 1965–70
• 1976–80
• 1986–90
• 1991–95
• 1996–2000
Alumni can also stand for
election for any of the other Era Rep
positions that are currently filled —
1971–75, 1981–85 and 1991–95 —
if you would like to challenge the
incumbent to an election.
For more information, or if
you’re interested in running, please
send your biography to President-
three or four people. The final date for reserving rooms under this
special rate is June 22, 2003. The rate is available for three days
to alumni. Please remember -- your booking at the Sheraton
Boston Hotel helps ensure next year's reunion, and the future of
the UWPIAA.
Things to know…
Eras
This is a term you will see frequently throughout
reunion. It refers to all the casts from a given year.
For example, the 98 era includes Casts A, B, C, D
and E 1998. Each era will be given their own
meeting room at the Sheraton for individual cast
meetings or informal gatherings during the
reunion.
Functions
Your reunion nametag (included with your registration
package) will be required for admittance to
all main activities. If you lose your nametag, the
replacement cost is $60.00.
Alumni Era Show
Each era will have time to rehearse for their
performance. Rooms are provided and preassigned
for rehearsal time. Most rehearsals take
place Saturday, July 26. Bands begin rehearsing
on Friday, July 25.
Hotel Rooms
In order to have a smooth check-in at the hotel,
please communicate with all your roommates to
confirm who will be sharing your room BEFORE
making a room reservation. This way, those
arriving early can check into the room, resulting in
less confusion or double booking, which can lead
to greater costs or disappointment for you.
Calling Cast Webmasters
Are you developing a web site for your cast?
Do you already have one? Are you just thinking
about it? There will be an informal meeting during
reunion to share ideas, tips and techniques with
other cast webmasters. Check the information
board at the registration desk for the time and
place. Some topics that may be discussed are:
• Pros and cons of free sites (like Geocites) vs.
paid sites
• Using MS-Frontpage or other web page
development programs vs. hacking HTML
with a text editor
• How to register a domain name
• Website design
• Use of Frames
• Use of META tags
• HTML utilities
• Page backgrounds
• Menus for accessing multiple pages
• Scanning photo prints into digital files
• Uploading your tour or reunion photos to
your web page
• URL links back to UWPIAA and online
directory
EAT
Audio/Visual Equipment
TV/ VCRs and boom boxes are available on loan.
(You will have to leave a piece of identification,
such as a credit card or driver’s license, as a
deposit.) Other equipment can be rented from the
hotel at an additional charge to you. You must
make these arrangements with the Sheraton
directly.
On a budget?
Here are some money-saving tips for Reunion
2003.
1. Save up to $100 by registering before May 3.
2. If you are bringing a spouse/partner or family
members, take advantage of the special couple/
family package
3. Double and triple up in your hotel room to
share room costs.
4. Consider making flight reservations early. Fare
sales have been coming and going, but the deals
won’t last forever.
5. Leave the rental car at the airport – you won’t
need it. The airport is right on the metro line
(called the “T” in Boston), and tourist attractions
and restaurants are within walking distance of the
hotel. The “T” should only cost you $1.00 from
the airport to the hotel. (Taxi service is also
available from the airport to the hotel.)
Registration Costs
(All costs are in U.S. dollars)
Note: Early and Advance Registration Deadlines
are effective as of 12:00 midnight on the date
given above. Online, fax and telephone reservations
will not be taken after Tuesday, July 15, at
12:00 midnight Eastern time. After that date,
registrants will need to register on-site at Reunion.
Registrations sent by mail must be postmarked
by July 10 to ensure the registration is
processed in time for Reunion.
Individual Package
Includes: One person attending all events,
whether alumnus, alumna, or guest. Does not
include any children.
Couple/Family Package
Includes: One person, one spouse/partner and up
to two children aged 3 – 13 years attending all
events (includes child meals for children). Registrations
for additional children may be purchased
with the “Additional Child” or “Youth” options.
Additional child
Each additional child age 3-13 when there are
more than two children included in a family
registration OR a child attending with and
individiual registrant. Children 2 and under do not
need to pay.
Youth
With the Individual or Family packages, youth
aged 14 to 18 may be added by purchasing youth
registrations (includes adult meal).
Child Care
The Sheraton Boston Hotel does not provide
childcare services, so you will need to contact an
outside company if you need babysitting services
during Reunion. One such company, which is
bonded and works with the Boston hotels, is
"Parents In A Pinch," at phone 617-739-5437. The
UWPIAA does not endorse or recommend any
outside vendor, but is making this information
available for your convenience. You may also
contact the concierge at the Sheraton for further
referrals.
Sightseeing in Boston
With so much to do in the Boston area, you are
encouraged to arrive early to Reunion or stay after
it ends (special Reunion rates at the Sheraton are
valid three days before and after Reunion, subject
to availability). As the birthplace of the American
Revolution, Boston has numerous historical sites
and museums, including several children’s museums.
Other attractions include sports venues, a
zoo and aquarium, beaches, and even whalewatching
on nearby Cape Cod. More information
will be given in the summer issue of UpBeat, or
visit www.bostonusa.com.
Cast Representatives
Your cast reps will have the most up-to-date information regarding all of the activities at the
reunion. Keep in touch with them for updates! If your cast doesn’t have a representative, or you
are unable to get in touch with your designated rep, contact your Era Rep for information.
welcome a new sibling in April 2003.
Our Denver UWP family has
definitely grown — and each addition
brings joy to not only the
parents, but the “honorary aunts and
uncles” as well.
Keep your eyes on UpBeat and
on the alumni web site for more
additions to our group. As for me?
I’ve stopped drinking the water in
Denver, just to be safe. I’m usually
not superstitious, but you just never
know.
WorldSmart Leadership Program:
Opportunities to Help
According to Jeff Hoag, CEO of UWP, the biggest opportunities to
help right now are assisting UWP secure relationships with universities
and making a financial contribution. If you have a contact with a
university that may be interested in the WorldSmart Leadership
Program, please contact Hiro Nishimura, COO of UWP, at
hnishimura@upwithpeople.org. He can send you a packet of information
to forward to the university.
Also, alumni are strongly requested to educate themselves about
WorldSmart by visiting www.upwithpeople.org, then identify potential
students who match the criteria. Consider siblings, sons, daughters,
fellow students, even the kids you used to baby-sit. Within the section
of the web site titled “Student” there is a summary of the program and
criteria for enrollment. Qualified students shoud be referred to the web
site to register and note their interest in enrolling.
Other opportunities to help exist as well. Monetary donations will
accelerate the progress and are always welcome, and now you can
contribute online at the www.upwithpeople.org. According to Jeff,
UWP has an endowment of more than $7 million (U.S.), but use of
those dollars is currently restricted — primarily being designated as
scholarships funds for students once the program is again operational.
He estimates that up to $3 million (U.S.) in start-up resources will be
needed to launch the new program.
The new UWP also needs assistance with developing questions
and answers about the program in local languages and interviewing
applicants locally.
Hiro urges all alumni to sign up for the e-mail list on the web
site. Anyone interested in volunteering to make WorldSmart
successful from its first semester should contact Hiro at
hnishimura@upwithpeople.org.
