2007 WILL, I BELIEVE, BE SEEN AS A WATERSHED YEAR FOR THE ARTS AND EDUCATION COUNCIL. 

A 

strategic plan was initiated and adopted. Input was sought from a variety of constituents; 

the community was engaged; focus groups were consulted and the committee worked 

thoughtfully to develop the plan. To all the participants, we are deeply grateful. 

The result is an ambitious goal to increase fundraising in the next five years by almost 60% 

to $4 million a year. The importance of realizing that goal for the arts and for our city 

cannot be overstated. The arts in St. Louis are superlative. They add immeasurably to the 

quality of life and are a significant attraction for new employees and tourists. The arts also 

are a major contributor to our economy. Maintaining and nurturing the arts and arts 

education in our community is critical for the vitality of our region. 

In order to achieve the strategic plan goals, there will be a particular emphasis on increasing 

workplace giving campaigns. In 2007, the Arts and Education Council realized the impact 

of workplace giving thanks to Edward Jones, who raised nearly $250,000. Bravo and a 

heartfelt thanks to the leadership who provided enthusiastic support and to those who worked 

on the campaign to make it such fun and such a success. The creativity and excitement of 

the campaign can be a model and inspiration to others. 

The strategic plan also revived the campaign cabinet as a way to carry the message of the 

Arts and Education Council into the community. Using experience from the history of 

the Arts and Education Council and from other united arts funds like that of Cincinnati 

(which raised $11 million) the cabinet will involve community leaders to engage donors. 

The development and adoption of the strategic plan has been an exciting and energizing 

process. The Arts and Education Council is now poised to make significant new contributions 

to the arts and thereby, to St. Louis. A deep debt of gratitude is owed to the many 

generous supporters who provided the donations that allowed the Arts and Education 

Council to provide crucial funding to 80 diverse and inspiring arts organizations, enhancing 

the quality of our lives and of our region. A special thank you again to all those who 

participated in the Strategic Plan process, who recognize the critical role played by the 

Arts and Education Council and who committed the Council to enhancing that role. 

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Jim Weidman, who in 2008 will retire as President of the 

Arts and Education Council. Under his leadership the Council moved into the Centene 

Center for Arts and Education with 13 other arts organizations and adopted the Strategic 

Plan. He energized the Arts and Education Council and laid the foundation for great things 

to come. As a result the Arts and Education Council is better able to keep art happening ® .

FROM THE PRESIDENT 3 

In 2007 the Arts and Education Council laid a solid foundation for the future. The 

Centene Center for Arts and Education grew to 14 occupants–near capacity; a new, 

five-year Strategic Plan was developed and adopted by the Board of Directors to take 

the Council to new levels; a new controller was hired with solid experience in non-profit 

accounting; and the staff was reorganized to support a restructured annual campaign led 

by a cabinet from the Board of Directors. 

During the first full-year in the Centene Center, it was exciting to see what can happen 

when you move 14 arts organizations into one building with great office space, superb 

technology and adequate common spaces for meetings, storage, events, rehearsals and 

performances. The evolving synergies were amazing to watch. Collaborations among arts 

organizations began. Organizations like St. Louis ArtWorks began to grow. Their summer 

programming for inner-city youth flourished throughout the building, a computerized arts 

program began and a new business–The Boomerang Press–was founded. 

Thanks to the generosity of Mary Strauss, the marketing offices of Dance St. Louis prepared 

to move into the vacant offices on the first floor to manage the Emerson Box Office–another 

great opportunity for collaboration among the performing arts organizations in the building. 

The Council’s capacity to fund arts and arts education organizations grew, thanks to the 

generosity of thousands of donors. This capacity was led by a record workplace giving 

campaign at Edward Jones–raising nearly $250,000, more than has ever been raised in such 

a campaign in the Council’s 44 year history, and exceeding their goal of $190,000 by more 

than 30 percent. As a result, $100,000 more grant monies were awarded to arts organizations 

and two were elevated to the next level of grants for 2008–Circus Flora to operating support 

and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra to the sustaining support level. 

And yes, the Strategic Plan also began the process of looking for my replacement in 2008. 

Retirement for me was delayed by the opportunity to work with the board, the staff, 

Steve Trampe and Vince Schoemehl on the development of the Centene Center for Arts 

and Education and the subsequent Strategic Plan. 2008 will provide the perfect time for 

a transition for me personally and for the Council, which will be led by a new person, 

continuing the course set when I started in 2002 of expanding awareness and increasing 

funding in support of the arts in our great city.

The Arts and Education Council enriches the vibrancy of the 

St. Louis community by investing in arts organizations and 

growing the base of local arts supporters. 

2007 was a year of transition for the Arts and Education Council... 

a year to chart the future for both the Centene Center for Arts and 

Education and the Council itself. In addition to raising funds for the 

arts, the board and staff worked diligently on a five year strategic plan, 

setting goals and outlining tactics for the next five years. 

IT BEGAN IN FEBRUARY WITH THE FORMATION OF THE PLANNING COMMITTEE.

The committee, along with Collaborative Strategies, Inc., decided on 

several areas to research and evaluate. The general goal was to develop a 

robust plan for adding value to the arts in St. Louis and raising more 

money. Focus groups were assembled to gather information. John 

Bachmann and Gretta Forrester met with past board members and 

chairs. Jim Weidman and Lisa McMullin met with executive directors 

of sustaining and operating grantees. Collaborative Strategies conducted 

meetings and discussions with several additional groups. 

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE RESEARCH, A VISION FOR THE FUTURE WAS CREATED.

FOUR STRATEGIC PRIORITIES WERE AGREED UPON: 

1 ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY Clarify and raise awareness of AEC’s purpose 

in the community to implement the development plan and highlight 

the organization’s leadership role in the arts. 

2 DEVELOPMENT PLAN Reinvigorate the annual campaign to significantly 

increase contributions and reach the targets established in the vision. 

3 PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Leverage the resources of the Centene Center 

and evaluate the range and reach of strategic training and advisory 

services for arts organizations. 

4 CAPACITY Align professional staff and mobilize a growing cadre of 

influential and engaged volunteers to support AEC’s contribution to 

the vitality of the arts in the St. Louis community. 

These four priorities have ambitious, yet achievable goals for each year 

– all reaching towards the ultimate goal of raising $4 million annually 

by 2012. We plan to meet this goal and continue to grow the base of 

local arts supporters for a long time to come.

In 2007, the Art and Education Council 

continued its fundraising mission 

stressing the importance of “One gift. 

Thousands of benefits.” Your one gift to 

the Arts and Education Council provides 

benefits to the entire non-profit arts 

community– supporting music, dance, 

theatre, film, literary arts, visual arts, arts 

education and outreach programs. 

Saint Louis Ballet 

This support comes from all branches of 

our community–from individuals, corporations 

and foundations. Special events, 

such as St. Louis On Sale ® and St. Louis 

Arts Awards, provided additional fundraising 

opportunities for us. And workplace 

giving campaigns again comprised about 

a third of our income. The Council raised 

over $2.5 million in 2007–bringing the 

total in our 44 year history to $95 million. 

But most importantly, we were able to 

provide funding to some fantastic arts 

organizations. They in turn gave St. Louis 

programs that enhance our quality of life, 

teach us, inspire us and make us happy.

That Uppity Theater Company DisAbility Project 

Foster Dance from ANNONYArts, 

serves at-risk teenage girls 

in the foster care system. It is 

dedicated to empowering young 

women with a sense of belonging 

and self-worth through dance, 

and instills awareness of regular 

physical activity. A CASA (Court 

Appointed Special Advocates) 

mentor noted: “During our last 

court date, the presiding judge 

took time to recognize my kiddo’s 

involvement in Foster Dance, 

thanked me for getting her 

involved, and encouraged her 

future involvement, as it showed 

that she was open and receptive 

to new ideas and people, and 

provided her a sense of belonging 

and involvement that was important 

to her personal growth.”

t the Centene Center for Arts and Education, arts and culture are flourishing 

like never before. The building is being utilized to its full potential with seminars, 

events, performances, rehearsals and meetings filling each and every space. 

Prison Performing Arts and AIGA, the professional association for design, moved 

into the facility, bringing the total number of residents to 14. And Dance St. Louis 

moved several offices to the first floor in preparation for their management of the 

Emerson Box Office. Funding for the move was provided by Mary Strauss.
