Ten Tips for Strengthening Your Marriage!
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly,
since love covers a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)
I want to share some personal and practical suggestions on
how to keep your marriage together when the world tries to tear
it apart. Mary Ruth and I have used these principles for 36 years
and they work!
1. Build a strong spiritual foundation for your marriage. Pray daily together,
read God’s Word, attend church and serve together. Couples who
authentically follow Christ together will divorce-proof their marriage.
2. Talk about everything and listen with intensity and curiosity.
3. Make your mate your best friend. It is almost impossible to divorce your
best friend.
4. Assume personal responsibility for the health of your marriage. Like
maintaining physical health, you need to work on keeping your
relationship in good shape by dating your mate. Love is spelled “t-i-m-e.”
5. Be honest and transparent with one another. Secrets bust your trust.
6. Resolve conflict immediately or it festers into bitterness. Don’t fuss about
trivial matters (Proverbs 19:11) Forgive generously. Don’t be afraid to
seek Christ-focused counseling.
7. Act in kindness towards one another all of your life. Simple kindness
costs so little and gains so much.
8. Develop marriage mentors who will provide good patterns for you to
emulate. Health is contagious.
9. Develop a growing array of shared interests. Share a walk and talk
around the neighborhood or a road trip. Sporting activities, work
projects, mission endeavors, watching movies and cooking meals
together create special bonds that glue you to each other.
10. Laugh together. Make sure there is laughter in the walls of your
home. Take your marriage health seriously but don’t take yourself too
seriously—lighten up!
If you want your love to last a lifetime, stay strong in Christ. Don’t walk out but
talk it out. Work through your challenges, and commit your marriage to His glory!
Follow Jesus together and He will make
a masterpiece of your marriage!
