on the short side with line 100
taking a half hour and line 200
taking 40 minutes from start to
finish, although, the length of
your tour will depend on how
much time you spend sightseeing
off the bus. Bus number 100
takes a more direct route down
the Unter den Linden and
number 200 detours slightly
through the modern shopping
area around Potsdamer Platz, the
museums in the Kulturforum,
and the Philharmonie. It also
passes by Berlin’s embassy
district and provides excellent
views of the diverse architecture
on display. The routes both begin
and end between Alexanderplatz
and the Bahnhof Zoo, so you can
choose your point of departure.
During your ride you are able
to see the Rotes Rathaus,
Museumsinsel (Museum Island),
and the Unter Den Linden where
the bus stops frequently making
it easy to get on and get off when
you please. The 100 bus takes
you past the Brandenburg Gate
and the Reichstag and then past
the Tiergarten. The bus drives by
the Siegessaule, also known as
the Victory Column, but if you
want a closer look, get off the
bus at the Nordische Botschaften
stop and follow Hofjagerallee
into the park. The end of the
100 line takes you close to
Kurfurstendamm (Ku’damm)
and Breitscheidplatz. A typical
sightseeing bus tour of Berlin
geared toward tourists cover the
same routes, but cost more than
10 €. KATE NEUSWANGER
EINSTEIN CAFE ON UNTER DEN LINDEN
Charlottenburg
Einstein
afé culture is alive and well Cin Berlin, and you won’t
have to walk far to find a café
serving an easily recognisable
brand. For a true taste of Berlin,
however, visit one of the many
Einstein Kaffee coffee houses
dotted around the city. Einstein
Kaffee started life in Berlin
in the 1990s and has since
expanded across Germany into
Belgium and has recently added
Egypt to its ever extending
franchise. It certainly rivals
many of the more famous global
brands, and this was recognised
in 2002 when it was awarded a
prestigious Food Service Award.
A wide range of sandwiches,
snacks and biscuits are on offer
but the star of the show has to be
the coffee. Order a milchkaffee
for a creamy and satisfying pick
me up, Berlin style. The menu
is reasonably priced, with hot
drinks costing anything from
1,80 € to 4 €, and a hearty
sandwich on freshly baked
bread costing 2 € - 5 €. Licensed
premises also offer a wide range
of alcoholic beverages, but
these push the budget somewhat
with a glass of wine costing
approximately 5 €. CATE HOPKINS
the historic heart of
the city, Unter den
the main thoroughfares
Originally named
Berlin could boast Unter
affection for the street lead to Hitler
reversing a decision to replace the
linden trees with Nazi flags, such
was the popular discontent at the
Lorsqu’on
projet : « Studio Dumbar’s design expresses authority
and efficiency without sensationalims...
