2012 NORTH AMERICAN 5o5 CHAMPION is HYC's TYLER MOORE
Submitted by Henry Amthor
Tyler Moore, along with his crew Rob Woelfel, are the 2012 North American 505
Champions. This is Tyler's 4th NA Championship. He won this title in San Francisco
and it was a hard fought regatta. The win was especially sweet for team HYC 1 as
the west coast 5o5 sailors have proven to be the best in the world in heavy air conditions
and hate to lose on their home waters.
Tyler and Rob had a huge battle with two-time 5o5 World Champion and 18' Skiff
Champion, Mike Martin who sailed with Jesse Falsone. Mike is a graduate of ODU
and has recently turned pro sailor to help run the America’s Cup as the Chief Umpire.
Third place finishers were Howie Hamlin and Andy Zinn. Howie has won two
World Championships in the 18' Skiff Class & one in the 5o5.
Team HYC 2 Henry Amthor and Dustin Romey placed 12th. Henry and Dustin finished
ahead of another strong team from California, skippered by Ed Conrad, that
was the top US boat at the France Worlds in July.
Host club San Francisco YC is located north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Tiburon
and is a stark contrast to St. Frances YC to the south, as the sun shines without fog (all day). The sailing area (Berkley Circle)
is still COLD, wet and windy this time of year. Henry said there is a ton of sea life. While there the HYC contingent
ran into notable HYC visiting members, Rob and Andi Overton and Eben Russell who sailed with HYC's Steven Hunt at
the 470 Olympic trials. Eben was sailing with Dave Parker, but they had some breakdown issues but still managed to have
a few good legs in the Big Breeze.
COMMODORE’S LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP
Submitted by David Eberwine
By the time most of you receive this newsletter, the Caribbean 1500 participants will be making way to warmer waters
and softer breezes. Thanks to our membership for supporting this significant yachting event through dockage, lending
a helping hand in readying boats and particularly this year, by loaning our clubhouse out for their Departure Party on
an ever-popular Friday evening. The Board and I are proud to have had this opportunity to show our full support of this
popular event in this way. Sailors from all over the eastern seaboard get the chance to experience, firsthand, the hospitality
of HYC members by our willingness to fully support this prestigious yachting event. To express our gratitude to
our members, the Board, Rich and I decided to move our Friday festivities to Saturday, Nov. 3 with the addition of live
entertainment with our friends from the ever popular, ‘Phoebus Rio!’ Thanks again, to all the members for supporting
this year’s Caribbean 1500!
In order to finalize the Donor’s Plaque for the elevator project, names of all donors who have contributed at the $500
and above level by December 31, 2012, will find their name inscribed on this special plaque. Thanks to all the members
who have forwarded their contributions through checks and monthly pledges, leaving only $15,000 remaining to
cover the full cost. Nothing but positive comments continue to roll in about this wonderful addition to our club!
Coming soon......NEW lighting and ceiling for the downstairs hallway to be followed by wall art and refurbished
Commodore pictures.
Check this Mainsheet for details on upcoming Adult Sailing Programs to take us through the Fall and Winter months.
ALBACORE 2012 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Submitted by Leigh Chapman
Hampton Yacht Club hosted the International Albacore Class on the weekend
of October 6-8 for their 2012 National Championship. The fleet of 18
boats enjoyed three days of impressive breeze, and even more impressive
Race Committee work. Race Officers Gary Bodie and Brian Deibler ably
managed their fleet of committee members to provide three solid races each
day despite some rather harrowing weather conditions on Sunday and Monday.
Many thanks to Peggy Hayes for providing a resting spot on her porch
for several sailors attempting to get out of the lightning storm on Sunday. I
think her hospitality and hot coffee will be the stuff of legends in the Albacore
Class. The sailors were thrilled with the event's success and have
asked to come back next year. Now that HYC has its own new Albacore
sailor (Sterling Spruill), future regattas with this great fleet are a sure thing.
Sterling, sailing with his 13-year-old daughter, was surprised and flattered to receive the fleet's award for Most
Improved over the course of the weekend.
Series standings after 9 races (3 each day, Oct 6,7,8):
Skipper/crew total points
1. Barney Harris/David Byron 12
2. Marty Hublitz/Steve Swenson 15
3. Marty Minot/Jordan Minot 27
CCV Fall Series
Reprinted from Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use # 613, Lin McCarthy editor
Racing for this Series, spread over 3 Fall Sundays, concluded with familiar names in the top spots. The final day of the
series was abandoned for two of the four fleets due to a sudden and unexpected total lack of wind (mid-race) plus an
exuberance of unopposed current. Boats drifting aimlessly, some backwards, on the course, is never a pretty
sight. The Fall Series races constitute part of the Cruising Club of Virginia High Point standings, Spring Series,
Founders Race, Sunday of SBRW, and the Moonlight Triangle making up the rest. The High Point winners will be
announced and trophies presented at the annual CCV Awards Party and Year End Bash on Saturday, November 10th ,
hosted this year at Hampton Yacht Club. (For info on the party, ressies and cost, contact Steve Taylor at
757.722.7861). FALL SERIES RESULTS: PHRF A (12 boats) – 1.Dave Eberwine, Sea Star (J36); 2.Phil Briggs,
Feather (J36); 3.John & Bev Blais, Stardancer (Beneteau 36.7). PHRF B (14 boats) – 1.Ben Weeks and Michele
November Membership Program
Around Cape Horn - a film by Irving Johnson
Monday, November 12 - 7:30 PM
In 1929 the last great days of commercial sail were passing. During that year Captain Irving
Johnson sailed aboard the massive barque PEKING. In this program he narrates the passage
in the style that had made him a favorite on the lecture circuit around the world. The most
spectacular scenes are filmed during a wind storm as the ship rounds the feared Cape Horn.
