One <strong>of</strong> the most strik<strong>in</strong>g trends <strong>in</strong> education <strong>in</strong> the past two or three decades has been the<br />

rapid <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> female educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment. From the cohorts born <strong>in</strong> the 1950’s onwards<br />

women quickly caught up with men <strong>in</strong> educational <strong>in</strong>vestment. Furthermore, it is clear that the<br />

growth <strong>in</strong> the educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> women has not stalled at gender parity. At the<br />

moment, female educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment clearly dom<strong>in</strong>ates male educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>in</strong> a<br />

majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrialized countries. This is true for several measures <strong>of</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ment. Women<br />

are <strong>in</strong> clear majority among secondary school graduates, among students enrolled <strong>in</strong> tertiary<br />

education, and among tertiary graduates. Furthermore, judg<strong>in</strong>g from recent trends it seems<br />

likely that gender gap <strong>in</strong> educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment will keep on widen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> women <strong>in</strong><br />

the future.<br />

These trends imply a dramatic change <strong>in</strong> the composition <strong>of</strong> the skill supply <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrialized<br />

economies. Whereas <strong>in</strong> the post WWII <strong>in</strong>dustrialized world men were substantially<br />

overrepresented among the highly skilled workers, this will not be true <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g decades.<br />

And this change happens at a time when educational <strong>in</strong>vestments are becom<strong>in</strong>g more and<br />

more important for labor market outcomes. In particular, the recent trend <strong>of</strong> employment<br />

polarization will likely lead to more pronounced differences between the labor market<br />

fortunes <strong>of</strong> high- and low-skilled workers. <strong>Gender</strong> differences <strong>in</strong> educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment imply<br />

that these highly rewarded high-skill workers will be predom<strong>in</strong>antly female and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

disadvantaged low-skill workers will be predom<strong>in</strong>antly male. <strong>Gender</strong> gap <strong>in</strong> educational<br />

atta<strong>in</strong>ment can therefore have far reach<strong>in</strong>g labor market implications.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this article is to provide an overview <strong>of</strong> the trends <strong>in</strong> gender differences <strong>in</strong><br />

educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment and to exam<strong>in</strong>e their potential causes as well as implications for labor<br />

market outcomes. When it comes to document<strong>in</strong>g the trends, the emphasis <strong>in</strong> this article will<br />
