3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
When the metal is treated at high temperatures, zinc or oxide zinc fumes may be produced. Inhalation
of zinc fumes may cause zinc fume fever resulting in flu-like symptoms. Ingestion of zinc dust may cause
gastrointestinal disorders. Zinc fumes may cause local eye irritation (more than 900 °C) .
4. FIRST AID MEASURE
Fumes and dust
Inhalation:
Ingestion:
Skin:
in case of inhalation of dust of fumes, immediately terminate exposure
and move to fresh air. Obtain medical attention.
it may cause vomiting (if the person remains conscious). Obtain
medical attention.
wash skin with abundant water and soap.
Eyes:
rinse eyes with large amounts of water, including under the eyelids.
In case of irritation, seek medical advice.
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURE
Suitable extinguishing media:
dry powder fire extinguishers; sand
Advisable extinguishing media:
no specific indications.
Special exposure hazards:
Special equipment:
noxious zinc oxide fumes may be produced at very high
temperatures.
approved full face masks and suitable protective clothing should be
worn.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURE
Personal precautions:
Environmental precautions:
Methods for cleaning up:
avoid zinc dust formation.
none in particular.
collect spilled material using suitable means and recycle it or return
to supplier for recovery

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling:
Stoccaggio:
avoid breathing zinc dust or fumes. Use an approved respirator if
the time limit of exposure is over.
store in a dry area, away from incompatible materials or products.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROL / PERSONAL PROTECTION
Occupational exposure limits:
ACGIH, 1994-1995 edition.
TLV-TWA: zinc oxide - fumes: 5mg/m3 -
dust: 10mg/m3.
Sufficient ventilation must be provided to maintain dust concentration in the air below the
occupational exposure limit.
Respiratory protection:
Hand protection:
Eye protection:
Skin protection:
Personal Hygiene:
use an approved and appropriate respirator if dust concentration in
the air exceeds the occupational exposure limit.
wear appropriate gloves.
wear safety goggles if eye contact is possible.
wear appropriate clothing
maintain a good personal hygiene. Avoid inhalation of zinc dust or
fumes. Wash hands thoroughly before eating and before drinking
or smoking.
