Healthy Child Care Iowa
Healthy Child Care Iowa (HCCI) was started in 1997, and modeled after the Healthy Child Care America Call to Action to
develop a system through the Iowa Department of Public Health to improve health and safety in child care. HCCI is a
program in the Bureau of Family Health, which is a division of the Iowa Department of Public Health
HCCI developed a system of Child Care Nurse Consultants that has grown from 5 part time RNs in 1998, to a statewide
system of RNs who are specially training to work in child care, and within the rules and regulations of DHS for child care.
The training of CCNCs is based on the National Training Institute for Child Care Health Consultants, at the University of
North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
HCCI serves as the advisory agency to DHS on health and safety issues in child care, in particular, infectious disease
control and injury prevention. HCCI bases their recommendations on national experts on health and safety in child care
such as the Centers for Disease Control, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The National Resource Center for
Health and Safety in Child Care, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), etc.

1. Asthma Action Plan
Asthma Action Plan is a multi-color 1 page (8 1/2 x 11) form child care businesses may use when
planning the care of a child with asthma.
2. Asthma Care Brochure
Asthma Care Brochure is a multi-color 2 page (8 1/2 x 11) document to help child care businesses
complete the Asthma Action Plan.
3. Child Care Weather Watch Poster
This 2-page poster provides information on weather and when it is safe for children to be out-of-doors.
The poster prints full color, on legal-size paper. English only. Front has weather chart, back has weather
related health information.
4. Child Health Exam Form
This 8 ½" x 11" form meets Iowa's child care regulations that require an annual physical exam for the
young child.
5. Child Injury/Incident Report Form
This form can be used by child care providers/centers to record an injury incident and the type of
treatment given.
6. Cleaning, sanitizing, or disinfecting, which should I do?
This handout guides child care providers in decided if they need to clean an item or surface or if the
surface needs to be sanitized or disinfected. The handout prints on 2 sheets 8"x11" paper.
7. Diapering Poster
This 2-page poster provides information on diapering procedure. The poster prints full color, on legalsize
paper. Page one is in English, page two is in Spanish.
8. Disinfectant Use
Use Disinfectants Wisely is a multi-color 2 page (8 1/2 x 11 landscape layout) document child care
businesses may use when making purchasing decisions for cleaners and disinfectants.

12. First Aid Kit Checklist
The checklist includes the supply items early childhood care and education providers should have to
appropriately respond to injuries occurring in the classroom, playground, or vehicles. The checklist
format allows each first aid kit to be checked on a monthly basis.

This poster provides information on gloving.
14. Guide to Childhood Illness
This 11" x 17" poster provides recommendations for parents, schools, and child care facilities about
common childhood illnesses.
15. Hand washing Poster
This 2-page poster provides information on hand washing. The poster prints full color, on legal-size
paper. Page one is in English, page two is in Spanish.
16. Head Lice Brochure
This brochure provides tips and treatment information about head lice as recommended by the Iowa
Department of Public Health. The size of this brochure is 8 1/2'' by 11''.
17. Infant Daily Report
This handout provides child care providers with a method for communicating with families about the care
of their infant. The document contains a section for parents to report the status of their infant upon arrival
at child care. And, the document has space for the child care provider to report the infant's status and
care to families.
18. Infant Sleep Positioning
"This handout provides child care consultants and child care providers with important information
discouraging the sleeping of infants in swings, bouncy seats, and car seats outside a vehicle."
19. Insect Repellent Fact Sheet
"This brochure provides facts and preventive tips for insect bites and stings."

This 8 1/2 " x 11" form meets Iowa Administrative Code 441-109 Child Care Centers and IAC 441-110
Child Development Homes physical exam forms for Iowa child care providers, employees, substitutes,
and volunteers.
21. Iowa School-Age Care - Health Status - Parent Statement
This 8 ½" x 11" form meets Iowa's child care regulations that require an annual parent statement about
their child's health.
22. Mandatory Reporting Poster
