The <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> Judiciary, the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> Bar Association, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

Police Chief’s Association are pleased to announce the eighth annual <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

<strong>Day</strong> <strong>Contest</strong>. The <strong>Contest</strong> is open to all <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> 10 th <strong>and</strong> 11 th grade students<br />

attending school in <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong>, but only to those grades. Through the generosity of the<br />

<strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> Police Chief’s Association <strong>and</strong> Cardi’s Furniture, the winning essay author<br />

will receive a Scholastic Award in addition to an internship opportunity with a <strong>Rhode</strong><br />

<strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> state court judge, <strong>and</strong> an engraved trophy cup. The winner’s school receives a<br />

permanent plaque <strong>and</strong> the annual <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Day</strong> <strong>Essay</strong> Award Trophy to display until the next<br />

<strong>Contest</strong>. We encourage all 10 th <strong>and</strong> 11 th grade <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> students to participate. The<br />

following guidelines <strong>and</strong> rules apply:<br />

The 2011 <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Day</strong> <strong>Essay</strong><br />

Describe, in no more than 800 words, how one of the following topics present 10 th <strong>and</strong><br />

11 th grade students with significant challenges in accepting their legal responsibilities.<br />

1) Posting Personal Info./Cyber bullying<br />

2) Sexting<br />

3) Same-Sex Marriage<br />

Background information on these topics can be found on our website. Students are also<br />

encouraged to draw on additional resources, but all outside information must be properly<br />

credited.<br />

A completed Student Entry form, signed by the sponsoring teacher, must accompany<br />

each essay entry. <strong>Essay</strong>s must not exceed 800 words. The essays are reviewed <strong>and</strong> the<br />

winner is selected by members of the faculty of the Roger Williams University School of<br />

<strong>Law</strong>. All entries must be received at the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Isl<strong>and</strong></strong> Bar Association no later than<br />

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Winners shall be announced on or before June 3,<br />

2011.<br />
