BACK TO IT
THANKS TO THE FALL ELECTIONS, there’s a new crop of
Georgia lawmakers joining the veterans this year – at least three dozen in
the House of Representatives and five in the Senate. At presstime, two
races in the House and one in the Senate had not been decided.
There are some leadership changes this year – some expected, some
surprising; but the Republicans have increased their numbers and
strengthened their majority.
Legislators new and old will be challenged by more belt-tightening
and budget-cutting, and there are pockets of government distrust among
the state’s voters that may make tough jobs tougher.
There’s likely to be some ethics reform legislation, some debate over
gun legislation and some tinkering with the unintended consequences of
HB 87, the anti-immigration law that has snarled some applications for
some professional and business license renewals. It should be an interesting
session.
Georgia Trend’s Legislative Guide provides contact information for legislators
and other elected officials. Associate Editor Christy Simo compiled
and updated the House, Senate and Congressional delegation
information.
The interior of the Capitol on the guide cover was photographed by
Becky Stein. Photos of the General Assembly members are the work of
Tyna Duckett, Liz Erikson, Alana Joyner, Wayne Parham, Jennifer Stalcup,
Becky Stein and the House communications department.
Information that was not available at presstime is indicated by NA.
Special elections for House Districts 71 and 21 are scheduled for Feb. 5; a
runoff election for Senate District 11 is set for the same day. Two other
Senate seats were determined via special elections as we went to press:
Brandon Beach (R) won District 21, vacated by Chip Rogers; and Mike
Dugan (R) will represent District 30. All other information in the guide
was correct as we went to press but may have changed since. For updated
information, readers should check online at www.legis.ga.gov or call the
House Communications Office at 404.656.0305 or the Senate Press Office
at 404.656.0028. – The Editors
