NFPA80 Basic Check List Swing Doors
No open holes or breaks exist in surfaces of either the door or the frame
Glazing, vision light frames & glazing beads are intact and securely fastened in place, if so
equipped
The door, frame, hinges, hardware & noncombustible threshold are secured, aligned, and in
working order with no visible signs of damage.
No parts are missing or broken
Door clearances at the door edge of the door frame, on the pull side of the door, do not
exceed clearances listed in 4.8.4 (the clearance under the bottom of the door shall be a
maximum of 3/4 in) and 6.3.1 (top & edges 1/8 in)
The self-closing device is operational, that is, the active door completely closes when
operated from the full open position
If a coordinator is installed, the inactive leaf closes before active leaf
Latching hardware operates and secures the door when it is in the closed position
Auxiliary hardware items that interfere or prohibit operation are not installed on the door or
frame
No field modifications to the door assembly have been performed that void the label
Gasket and edge seals, where required, are inspected to verify their presence and integrity

Fire Door Hardware
(A Key Component)
Door latches (lock sets), Closers, Coordinators & Flush bolts:
These hardware components usually relate to swing type fire doors
(office & corridor), found on your property.
Closers are required to make sure the doors close.
The coordinator is a device found at the header (bar, roller or other)
that ensures the doors close in proper order so they latch properly.
The flush bolts (often automatic) are found on the “in-active” door,
and will engage when the active door closes.

Panic Hardware
Panic Hardware is usually in the form of a “cross
bar” style configuration, and is designed to
allow high volume egress… Can be fire rated.
Come in many variations for single or double doors
Can be manual or electrified (access control)
Can be “exit only” or designed for two way traffic
Can provide high level security & traffic monitoring
Comes in various grades of quality & durability

Various Types of Roll-Up Doors
This category covers most warehouse overhead doors
including:
Overhead Coiling (Rolling Steel)
Drop Testing and Annual Follow-Up
General
This Technical Data Sheet provides facility managers with guidelines for evaluation of rolling
fire doors
designed and tested to provide the automatic closing fire protection indicated on the fire
door label. The
automatic closing of the door must be tested at the time the door is installed, and the door
shall be inspected and tested not less than annually as required by NFPA 80. The doors must
be checked regularly for conditions that may affect the operation of the door. DASMA
recommends that the following procedures be observed:
Inspection
Inspect fire doors for damage to guides, curtain and end locks, bottom bar, hood and
operating mechanism.
Refer to DASMA Technical Data Sheet #270 (“Recommended Rolling Door Maintenance
Practice”)
Refer to NFPA 80 (Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives)
Ensure that the door’s operating mechanisms, fuse links and release chain/cable are not
painted, coated
with dust or grease, and/or covered with debris.

Open and close the door to inspect for any indications of damaged parts.
Remove flammable substances on each side of the firewall opening near the fire door.
Drop Test
Have a trained door systems technician perform an inspection and drop test of all fire door
automatic
closing features.
Establish a contract with the door service provider regarding the cost of the inspection and
drop test. Fire door deficiencies identified during the pre-drop test inspection should be
corrected before the drop test.
The drop test contract should acknowledge the fact that components may fail during the drop
test that are
not the fault of the service provider and are not included in the cost of the drop test.
Document the drop test with the attached Drop Test Form.
When subjected to drop testing; the door must close completely and rest on the sill. NFPA 80
states that the average closing speed must not exceed 24 inches per second and must be at
least 6 inches per second.
The door must be drop tested twice – once to verify proper operation and full closure, and a
second time to verify that the automatic closing device was properly reset.
