Two of my best friends when I was growing up lived across
Every time you sponsor a new member your name
will be entered into a contest for a prize to be drawn
the road from our family. We went to the same grade school,
made mud pies in our playhouse and basically did what kids
for at the District Convention April 13, 2013.
did back then to entertain ourselves. It was, however, a little
difficult for those two friends of mine. Both of them were born IN A WORLD OF SERVICE
without arms. Their hands were on their shoulder sockets.
So it was not easy for them to do certain things, and in some
instances, impossible. Riding a bicycle was not one of their
pleasures. Their daily routines like combing hair, pulling on
jeans and tying shoes were not easy. One of the other kids
would simply step in when it was their turn to swing the bat or
catch the ball.
Brighton donated $200 worth of school supplies to the two
elementary school of the Washington School District.
Columbus Junction donated $200 to
local girls’ 4-H club for helping serve
at breakfast fundraiser, raised $1488 at
breakfast, KidSight screening for 95 preschool
and elementary children.
An old rock song’s lyrics say, “If I could make a wish, I think
I’d pass - can’t think of anything I need.” I’m sure if we would
have asked that boy or girl, they would have wanted to make a
wish. Some wishes cannot be granted, however. There are times
Fairfield sold Harper Brush, Quinn
brooms and light bulbs door to door in
Fairfield.
when each of us just needs someone to care about us and for us. Fort Madison screened sixty children. Served 842 people at
This time of the year we receive pleas from non-profits and
their annual Tri State Rodeo pancake breakfast.
other organizations for food and clothing to help people prepare Iowa City donated $2,000 to Iowa Lions Foundation, $50
for the holidays and the winter ahead. There is a great need, for memorial brick in memory of Bob Libby, $100 to Local
many worthy needs. And we want to help those in need. We, as Food Connection, TV coverage for KidSight Screening, three
Lions, provide food and clothing for hundreds of people in our members screened twelve children and sent thank you notes to
communities each year. But sometimes there is a more difficult those participating in golf tournament.
need to fill. There may be some who do not need a winter coat
or hat or gloves or even a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. As
our new International Director, Judy Hankom’s theme suggests,
give us “a caring heart.“ Sometimes, people just need us to sit
with them, hold their hand when times are tough, put our arm
on their shoulder and tell them to call day or night if they need
us, take them for a ride in the country, or tie their shoes. And
Keokuk did preschool eye screening for approximately sixty
children.
Knoxville donated $7,000 to the Knoxville High School athletic
department. The club prepared pancakes for the Nana Jana Fun
Run to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer at the Dan D Farms corn
maze in Knoxville. Over 180 runners participated.
not just during the holidays, but every day of the year, “In a Lone Tree donated “So Much More To See” books to the Lone
