Please join us in celebrating the Alfred Z. Solomon Stage this
summer and every summer, and in giving thanks to the Solomon
Trust and its trustees, Robert E. Ingmire and Harry D. Snyder.
A generous grant from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust
of Saratoga Springs has enabled Saratoga Shakespeare Company
to design and construct the Alfred Z. Solomon Stage.
Our 2007 production of Much Ado About Nothing marks the
debut of this permanent, portable playing space. Designed
by Lary Opitz, Louis Allen, and Bill Fritz, and constructed by
Bill, the stage aims at a modern version of the playing areas
of Shakespeare’s time, at the Globe and other theaters. It
features twin doors for exits and entrances; raised platforms
for balcony scenes; a trapdoor for ghosts, graves, and pits;
and a hidden “discovery” area. We hope it provides you, our
audience, a sense of what it was like to watch Shakespeare’s
plays in 1600—by daylight in the open air, with your imagination
joining with the actors speaking this beautiful language
to create theatrical magic.
Much Ado About Nothing
SynopSiS
Setting: Leonato’s house in Messina, Sicily
The play explores different dramatic approaches to love with its two contrasting
couples: Hero and Claudio, who fall in love at first sight, and Beatrice
and Benedick, who continually squabble until their discord reveals itself as an
aspect of their psychologically complex love.
With the help of Don Pedro, a Spanish prince, Claudio wins the hand of Hero,
daughter of Leonato, Messina’s governor. Beatrice, Leonato’s sharp-witted
niece, resumes a long-standing war of words with Benedick.
Beatrice and Benedick’s friends decide to play a practical joke on both of
them. In parallel eavesdropping scenes, the men trick Benedick into believing
Beatrice is in love with him, and the women play the same deception
on Beatrice. Benedick and Beatrice end up acknowledging the love lurking
behind their battles with each other.
Don John, Don Pedro’s wicked bastard brother, plots to wreck Claudio and
Hero’s wedding. He makes Claudio and Don Pedro believe they have seen
Hero entertaining a man the night before the rites. At the wedding, Claudio
denounces Hero, who faints. Friar Francis persuades Leonato to spread word
that Hero has died of grief and shame. Beatrice enlists Benedick to kill Claudio
in a duel, but Claudio refuses to take Benedick’s challenge seriously.
Meanwhile, the watchmen working under the incompetent constable Dogberry
have arrested Don John’s henchmen. With Dogberry’s bumbling assistance,
they expose the plot against Hero, confirming her innocence.
Claudio mourns Hero and agrees, as penance, to marry another niece of
Leonato, who appears veiled at the altar.
She is revealed to be Hero, alive and still in love with Claudio. Benedick and
Beatrice announce their impending marriage, to everyone’s astonishment,
and the play ends with a festive dance.
