Dear SUNO Community, This has been another tremendously successful year for the Southern University at New Orleans athletic department. As you know, our university has a great tradition of success in intercollegiate competition but each year we strive to build upon that tradition with each new group of athletes that enter our program. The 2012-2013 athletic year was particularly eventful. Our student athletes were winners in the classroom and on the field of competition and continued to show a commitment to their community. We won a conference tournament championship for the second consecutive season, set a number of records and saw two of our teams earn national rankings. Our volleyball team started the year in great fashion, finishing the season with a 23-9 record, setting team records for regular season wins (21), total wins (23), regular season conference wins (8) and consecutive wins (9). During the Indoor Track Season, Bruce McLean (60 meters) and Warith Fennoy (Triple Jump) both put up qualifying efforts for the NAIA championships on the Men’s side. For the Women, Leonie Robinson (60 meters, 200 meters), Yoniece Martin (200 meters, 400 meters), Adriana Brown (60 meter hurdles), Mackola Joseph (800 meters), Orenthia Bennett (400 meters, 800 meters), Tamara Hunter (400 meters) , Safia Jenkins (400 meters) and the 4x400 relay team all qualified for the national championships. Our men’s basketball team entered the season ranked in the top-25 after its run to the second round of the NAIA basketball championships in 2012. The team struggled during the regular season , finishing tied for 4th in the GCAC, but made it to the semi-finals of the GCAC tournament before falling to runner-up Dillard. The Lady Knights basketball team earned an invitation to the NAIA tournament after winning their first GCAC tournament title in more than a decade. Finally, during the outdoor track season, SUNO was able to send a number of athletes to the national championships with Sheldon Williams earning the NAIA title in the Men’s 400 meter hurdles, the first individual championship for SUNO since 2006. As proud as I am of the accomplishments of our student-athletes for what they have accomplished during athletic competition , the mission of our University is to provide them with a quality education as they move forward in their lives. This year, we were able to celebrate the graduation of 12 athletes and the overall Grade Point Average for student-athletes continues to outpace that of the University as a whole. This report will give you greater detail about the Southern University at New Orleans athletic program, our current achievements and our vision for the future. Athletics is one of the cornerstones of the collegiate experience and as Athletic Director I understand and cherish the legacy of SUNO athletics that I have been charged to protect and to nurture. This season a total of 37 student athletes earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The women’s track team led the way with 80 percent of the squad meeting that mark. In fact, Southern University at New Orleans had 15 athletes earn a GPA of 3.5 or high and 4 with a 4.0 for the 2012-13 academic year. All told, SUNO athletes posted a cumulative GPA of 2.91.
