The 2012-2013 Lady Knights basketball season really began at the conclusion of the 2012 GCAC tournament. After watching the SUNO men celebrate winning the tournament championship rising seniors April Perry, JaNee Morton, Sheanice Rhoden and Rose Boatner went to Head Coach Elston King and stated, “That will be us next year”. When the Lady Knights took the court that fall, they played with a steely determination and sense of urgency each and every game. Led by their core of seniors and bolstered by junior center Sabrina Scott, junior forward Sharilyn Reed and freshman Alisha Drayton, the team won 14 of its first 16 games. SUNO gave notice that it would be one of the nation’s toughest teams in a 57-56 loss to Westminster College (Utah) in The Castle. Westminster would go on to finish 7th in the nation and the ladies in blue and gold took them down to the wire, with an opportunity to win the contest on their final possession. But it was in conference play where the team really found its way. April Perry provided an electric scoring touch over the course of the season, with Morton, Boatner and Scott anchoring one of the nation’s top front courts. The team finished just one game behind Xavier University for the regular season conference title. From the outset of the GCAC tournament, the Lady Knights played like a team on a mission winning their first two contests by an average of 27.5 points. In the final, SUNO hung on to defeat a very tough Tougaloo squad behind a combined 51 points from Perry and Morton. This sent the Lady Knights back to the NAIA tournament for the first time in more than a decade. After a close first half, SUNO fell to Lubbock Christian ending their magical season. However, the memories that this team provided to each other and their fans will not soon be forgotten. 2013 Women’s Basketball Achievements Won second GCAC tournament championship and made second NAIA Women’s Basketball Championship appearance. Defeated nationally ranked Xavier University on the road. Led nation in Field Goal Percentage Defense. Led GCAC in Scoring Offense, Field Goal Percentage Offense, Field Goal Percentage Defense, Total Offensive Rebounds and Assists per game.
This season Southern University at New Orleans experience great team and individual success. The athletic program finished 3rd in the standing for the All-sports conference championship while regularly fielding fewer athletes in track and field than competing schools and operating fewer athletic programs overall than a number of conference foes. In addition several individual athletes were singled out for their achievements at both the All-Conference and All-American levels. Women’s basketball coach Elston King was named GCAC Co-Coach of the Year.
