I really wanted to lose weight and get fitter. ‘In the first three weeks, I lost 9lbs, my clothes fitted better and I didn’t feel so tired, especially on the early shifts.’ Stoke MDEC has demonstrated its commitment to workplace health by winning a bronze and silver award in association with Staffordshire County Council. The awards were developed by the council to recognise businesses that value a healthy workforce and commitment to a healthy workplace culture for employees. The manual data entry centre had to demonstrate high standards in various processes such as its approach to sickness, implementing wellbeing initiatives, raising health and safety awareness and participation in local community initiatives. Work area manager Teresa Barlow says: ‘Now we want to achieve the gold award, and our employees are all getting involved to help us get there.’ John O’Neill, operations manager at Stoke MDEC, adds: ‘To be a part of a select few businesses within the county to win these awards makes me proud, and it was worth all the hard work. Like the Team GB Olympians in 2012, we are going for gold!’ full steam ahead for art event Art on display... Sandra, who is the site’s CWU learning rep, organised an art exhibition at the Steam Museum in Swindon. She did it with support from Royal Mail and the CWU, as well as Unite, Unionlearn, ATL, Swindon New College and BT. ‘The exhibition was all about creativity in the workplace, featuring art, poetry, songs and sculptures by our postmen and women,’ says Sandra. ‘It was a great opportunity for people to show friends and family – as well as the general public – what they get up to in their spare time. ‘The event was inspired by a project in Northern Ireland where trade union members produced works of art inspired by their workplaces. We wanted to bring this idea to Swindon, and had a great response.’ Splash out for spring win! Priya rescued a disabled customer Lifesaver Priya rescues trapped customer Plucky postwoman Priya Ponton saved an elderly disabled man who was stuck in a fire at his flat. ‘I was on my usual walk when I heard a fire alarm in a block of flats,’ says Priya, based in Gravesend. ‘I went in to take a look and found smoke coming from an open door. ‘I heard the man call for help, and found him in his wheelchair with a blazing fire caused by the toaster.’ He had already pulled a cord in his home linking to the emergency services, but Priya wheeled him outside and told all his neighbours in the same block to evacuate too. Priya adds: ‘I was running a little bit late that day, but in the end I’m glad I was, or he could have been stuck in there for longer.’ Mark raises the alarm On-the-ball postman Mark Gorthy helped save a woman’s home from serious damage. He called the fire brigade when he came across a house fire on his walk in Monifieth, Angus. Mark, based at Dundee East, heard a smoke alarm and a dog barking in the property. He looked through the letterbox and spotted smoke billowing from the kitchen, and made the 999 call. ‘The smoke was quite thick by the time I looked in,’ he says. ‘The firemen said there could have been devastating consequences if it was left any longer.’ The dog escaped unharmed, and Mark featured in various articles in Dundee newspapers praising his efforts. Quick-thinking postman Gary Scobbie leapt into action to make sure his customers were safe from a fire. Gary, from Dundee, was approached by a man who had already rescued his two children from the fire in his living room, and wanted help alerting neighbours. Gary said: ‘I went to the flat and the fire was already out of control. I quickly called the fire brigade, then knocked on all the neighbours’ doors to make sure they knew to evacuate.’ Alarming situation...
