MIDLANDS GIVES May 5, 2015 – An Online Day of Giving
Complainant Jane Doe completed an intake with the South Carolina Fair Housing Center
(SCFHC) regarding a reasonable accommodation for her disability of low vision. To help her
navigate the steps to her rental, Jane put up lighting, as displayed in the picture. The lighting
assisted her in the daytime, but particularly at night.
After successfully using such lights for some time, Jane’s landlord demanded that she remove
them. To be compliant, Jane removed the lights, but asked that she be allowed to put them back
up as a reasonable accommodation. She was denied & told that management would put up
lights. This did not happen. While waiting, Jane fell twice.
Ultimately, she contacted the SCFHC and filed a complaint. The SCFHC initiated contact with
the housing provider, advocating for the immediate reinstallation of Jane’s lights. Within days,
Jane’s lighting was reinstalled. To the center, Jane had these words:
“Thanks for all your help in getting my lights back so that I can
feel safe again where I live.”
When giving to the center on May 5th during "Midlands Gives", you will be supporting the
continuation of enforcement work like what was accomplished for Jane. The following donation
amounts can provide:

$25.00 donation = training one fair housing tester

o
Fair housing testers assist in determining if housing has been unlawfully denied, if
there has been unlawful treatment in terms and conditions, eviction of domestic
violence victims due to the actions of their abusers, etc. . . .

$75.00 = completion of one test to ensure that prohibited characteristics are
not used to deny a mortgage loan
o For example, female headed households with children have increased by 11.8% in
South Carolina, yet receive mortgage loans at less than ½ the rate of male headed
households. Testing determines why this gap persists
$100.00 = conducting one education and outreach session with a local
community organization, non-profit group, business, etc. . . .
o Such sessions include the presentation of information regarding what the Fair
Housing Act means and how to enforce one’s rights. Presentations have been held
in Florence, Charleston, Columbia, Marion, Rock Hill, Estill, Allendale, Lake City,
and more. One attendee noted: “This will help me when I deal with
tenant/landlord issues. I will definitely use this knowledge in my everyday
routine.”
We hope that you will give on that day to the South Carolina Fair Housing Center. As this is an
ONLINE giving day, giving can be made from anywhere in the United States, not just those
residing in the Midlands. To give:
