‘TURKEYS VOTING FOR A
CHRISTMAS’ By Bill Aitken
The introduction of
Joint Regional Planning
Panels (JRPPs) to
determine local planning
matters with a price tag of
$10million or more has
council’s everywhere
concerned.
Given Hornsby Council’s
controversial Housing
Strategy, it is not hard to
see that there could be
many developments
initiated well above this
value in coming years and
neither councillors nor
residents will have any say
whatsoever in their
determination.
Another area of concern
is how will Section 94
developer contributions be
arranged?
Will these go into one
corporate melting pot used
to fund the large
infrastructure such as
transport, hospitals and
Larool Pre-school
Director, Michelle Healey
said,
“We are delighted to be
given this opportunity. It
has provided some Larool
and fun experience, that
often. The kids danced up
CROSS~tALK
THE KYLE SANDILANDS SAGA…
THE PROBLEM WITH RELATIVISM
We all saw it coming. One of the Australian Idol judges we
love to hate, FM radio personality shock-jock Kyle
Sandilands, pushed the envelope too far this time. A recent
interview on live radio that discussed the sexual behaviour
of a 14 year old with her mother present disclosed a prior
rape incident and sent listener feedback lines into meltdown.
Instant reaction from most of the community: outrage and
disgust. Sandilands was in the firing line for airing the
disclosure in the name of ratings and not caring enough for
the victim.
The point is, Sandilands has always pushed the envelope of
bad taste and offensive content in the name of ratings. It is
interesting to note that in this instance, community buttons
were pushed that ran deep, very deep, and he got caught
out. Rape crisis clinics were outraged. Community leaders
were appalled. A line had been crossed. But don’t we live in
an age of tolerance and relativism, where freedom of
expression is enshrined in our cultural values?
Truth is, relativism breaks down when we get such
appropriate moral outrage as witnessed in the Sandilands
saga. It’s simply not true to say that a society that allows
anything in the name of freedom and sophistication and
maturity is immune from crossing the line. Trouble is,
without an absolute to help guide us, how do we know
where the line is that we shouldn’t cross? I believe there
are some absolutes that shape our shared life experiences
and values. One is that abuse of any description is wrong –
and we all know it. God has given us a guide for discerning
truth…it’s written in His Word, the Bible. Check it out –
you’ll be surprised at how
liberating absolutes can be when
given by an unconditional Lover.
Additionally, boarding
houses with one car space
per 10 rooms will be
allowed in commercial and
residential areas previously
exempt from this type of
development.
Low density residential
areas could find large
boarding houses ‘plonked’
in streets where council
zoning laws would have
prohibited this.
Hornsby Council’s
response to JRPPs was
raised at Council’s
Planning Meeting on
August 5.
It was recommended
that Council withdraw the
nomination of its Planning
and Environment
Managers to the JRPPs and
replace these with the
nomination of the General
Manager.
While technical and
legal expertise will
obviously be sought for
these panels, if paid
council employees are
going to be co-opted to
these, community
representation and views
will be stifled.
Clr Michael Hutchence
moved an amendment that
would see the Council
lobbying the State to
increase the threshold on
which it could determine
developments from $10
million to $50 million.
His fellow councillors,
apart from Clr Martin, felt
THE ELEPHANT AND THE ANT By Bill Aitken
Leader of the Federal
Opposition, Hon. Malcolm
Turnbull, visited Pennant
Hills on July 30 to discuss
with constituents jobs for
Australians and issues
facing small business.
Part of a whistle stop
tour around the country at
the time when the media
was inflamed with the
‘ozcar’ debacle, the Liberal
leader appeared tired and
somewhat jaundiced.
It did not help when the
first questioner, a selffunded
retiree, avoided the
topic of employment and
led with a somewhat
confusing diatribe on the
impact of the global
meltdown on her
dividends, bad financial
advisors, the Jackie Kelly
letterbox drop affair, the
that they had more chance
of success if they aimed to
have the threshold
increased to $30 million.
This was moved and
carried.
In arguing to push for
the $50 million cap, Clr
Martin said,
“We should give people
at grass roots the power to
make decisions at a local
level.
“This way, we are like
turkeys voting for a
Christmas.”
Unfortunately, the
impact of planning
changes in NSW may see
all of us on Macquarie
Street’s yuletide menu.
Godwin Gretch email and
honesty in politics.
Turnbull’s tinderbox
reaction was akin to an
elephant stepping on an
ant.
His anger was palpable
and he flashed back by
referring to the comments
as ‘mealy mouthed’ stating
his abhorrence of bogus
emails and letter drops and
reiterating that he and his
party had relied on the
sworn testimony of a
Treasury official and were
blameless in the Gretch
affair.
When the questions
moved back on course, the
gathering brought forward
concerns on a range of
issues including: the
difficulty in operating
businesses nationally due
to conflicting state
industrial laws and awards;
Making their business his business, Hon. Malcolm Turnbull
in discussion with local businessman Jay Thorogood of
Signpac, Hornsby.
the additional costs to
business of workers’
compensation and OH&S
arising from the extension
of the retirement age to 67;
age discrimination against
employees over 45;
disincentives to
employment due to
changes to unfair dismissal
laws; disincentives to
employ apprentices due to
costs and red tape; the
need for a greater point of
difference between the two
major parties on business
and finance policies and
the turn around in
immigration policy towards
family reunions and away
from skilled migrants.
The object of this
exercise was to take on
board constituents’
comments with a view to
formulating policies. While
commitment was sought
on many of the issues
raised none was given.
Mr. Turnbull indicated
that he favours the
introduction of allowing
previous years’ tax losses to
be claimed retrospectively
by businesses and
recognises that overregulation
at all levels of
Government must be
addressed. Aside from this,
his assurance that “Labor
in government believes it
knows best, a Liberal
government enables you to
do your best,” must have
sounded rather hollow to
the unemployed 50 year
old woman in the third
row.

It will become the home
ill offer space for
ornsby Council’s
onsiderable art collection,
resently in storage, to be
ung on a rotation basis
nd open for viewing by
If successful and when
Hornsby Art Society has
developer trade off and
ociety at a subsidised
ental which Council
laims is costing it $57,000
er annum in strata fees
nd foregone commercial
Despite inadequate
arking, low ceiling
eights and the
mpairment of viewing by
own columns, the gallery
as been made viable and
successful by virtue of
Council’s subsidy but
Council had given notice
of a rent hike to $17,000
per annum which would
have meant the end of the
Society’s operation.
With the decision to
proceed with ‘Wallarobba’
Council intends leasing or
selling the existing asset
and using this money to
restore the new Centre.
President of Hornsby Art
Society, Linda Baranov and
a packed gallery of
members of a number of
local arts groups were
overjoyed at the
unanimous decision.
“This indicates Hornsby
is serious about the Arts
and the centre will attract
grants, joint arts projects, a
sharing of ideas and skills
and allow us to further
develop our youth work.
“The rich cultural
heritage of the building
with its high ceilings offers
a much more appropriate
gallery space than that
which we have and one
which we simply couldn’t
afford,” Linda Baranov
said.
Despite the euphoria,
this was not unanimous as
the Willow Park centre is
currently leased on
peppercorn week by week
rentals to a number of
community groups
including, Hornsby
Chamber of Commerce,
St.John’s Ambulance and the
Church. These groups were
MAJOR UP-GRADE
Ku-ring-gai Council has
commenced work on a $1.6
million upgrade of South
include three re-built ovals,
modernised cricket practice
nets, a new youth area
including a rebound wall,
landscape works and a new
represented at the meeting
and all claimed that they
had had little
communication other than
vague indicators of
council’s intent until a few
days before the meeting.
The displacement of
these groups could mean
their closure. If they apply
to Council in writing
before September 18, they
will be offered assistance
by Council staff to find
alternative premises but
whether these will be
within their budgets is
open to conjecture.
Local Member, Judy
Hopwood went into bat for
these groups on August 17
saying she was ‘floored’ by
the way in which Council’s
decision was taken.
Completion of the work
is scheduled for March
A major upgrade of
The works include: Reconstruction
of the three
ovals with new drainage,
irrigation and regraded
Wallarobba at Willow Park, Hornsby will be refurbished
as a new Arts Centre but other community groups
could be the losers.
would support the concept
of a visual arts centre in
Hornsby, but this should
be a purpose-built facility
that can be used for a
variety of arts endeavours.
Other worthy
organisations should not
be sacrificed to provide
one sector of the
community with a
temporary home.
“Council has made a
decision that will have a
huge impact on many in
the community; without
those most affected given
ample time to have their
say,” she said.
Clr. Michael Hutchence
summed up the decision
for the new centre with,
extended cricket practice
nets; A new baseball
practice cage; A new all
weather youth precinct with
a rebound wall, which
allows users to train in a
variety of sports without the
need for a partner; New
baseball and softball pitches
and New landscaping
including new paths and a
picnic area.
“This may not be the
‘Taj Mahal’ Civic Centre
that some in the
community have been
calling for and which we
simply cannot afford. We
must take opportunities as
they arise otherwise we
will be sitting on our
hands for the next 10
years.”
pass, I will accept it,” he
said.
Peter Waite of Pennant
Hills, offered a compelling
argument that the state
should immediately take
over the quarry as ‘a state
significant problem’ and
enumerated many reasons
why the quarry and its
problems were beyond the
power, funding and
expertise of Council to
solve.
The Council is also
seeking to separate the Old
Man Valley section of the
land from that of the
quarry so that the two sites
might be considered
separately in terms of
developing them for public
recreation and open space.
The decision was to
prepare an overall Master
Plan for the lands,
including the
redevelopment of the
Hornsby Aquatic Centre.
The resident who would
not be silenced said,
“All of this is only
possible not definite.
Council won’t be filling.
This won’t pass noise
impacts or environment
studies. This is an
environmental disaster and
a Masterplan for Old Man
Valley will only be done to
allow for re-zoning of the
land to residential. There
shouldn’t be a Masterplan
for a possible
development.”
Obviously, there will be
a great deal more venom
before the first load of
VENM goes into the hole.
FREE RANGE EGGS, THE COUNCIL AND THE CAKE
On August 12 at its
Ordinary meeting the
council passed the
following motion.
That Council request that
all egg based foods supplied
by Council’s caterers for
Council functions be
prepared using free range
eggs.
This was a progressive
move for animal welfare
especially and ties in with
the news from Woolworths
that they are gradually
phasing out many ranges
of cage eggs from their
supermarkets and even
McDonalds in Australia
have shown their intention
to convert to free range
eggs in the near future.
However, after the
council meeting the
councillors retired to the
councillors’ room to enjoy
a cake purchased for a
birthday celebration. Then
arose a moral dilemma.
The cake was made with
cage eggs, should they eat
it bearing in mind the
motion just passed. They
ate the cake because it was
bought before the motion
was passed.
But what would they do
next time? They would
need a free range cake and
they reckoned that the
nearest supplier was
Chatswood, about 10k
away. It was so far away,
such a difficult problem to
solve. So what’s the
solution? It’s all too hard
let’s reverse the motion we
just passed. Let’s put in a
rescission motion.
As the mover of the
motion which I am
prepared to vigorously
defend, I think they
missed the point. The
purpose of the motion was
for the council, as a user of
catering in the area to
generate a requirement for
free range products and
encourage their availability
to the people of the Shire.
As you can see, at the
moment people living
between Hornsby town
and Chatswood are unable
to buy free range cakes
and that’s the way it will
stay if this motion is
reversed.
The rescission motion is
being considered on
September 9 at 6:30pm at
Hornsby Council
Chambers. If you support
my action I will be glad to
see you there on the night.
While the intersection
A number of other
The one so called “gross
pollution trap” I look at
periodically is in Davidson
Park Normanhurst, which
was installed early in the
program. It has never
collected anything like
enough to justify its cost. I
wonder how typical it is of
the hundreds of other
devices around the Shire.
Recently Council
proudly announced that in
the past year these
pollution traps had
removed 1200 cubic
metres of “pollution”. As
the 5% rate surcharge will
provide about $3.3M this
year, this equates to $2750
per cubic metre. This is
dreadful! Especially when
95% of this “pollution” is
just leaf litter.
I just wonder if more
could have been achieved,
at much less cost, by
simply doubling the
frequency of ordinary
street sweeping, but at
appropriate times.
There is more. This rate
is supposed to be used
only for the purpose for
which it is raised. What
appears to be happening is
that up to about 10% (my
guess) is creamed off the
top by Council officers for
things listed as “Executive
support”, “salaries for
Customer Service Unit”,
“Corporate Cost
Allocation” (whatever that
is) and several other
strange things. This money
is supposed to be held in a
restricted account and the
interest earned should be
added back to that
account. However a 2005
Council report states that
up until that time the
interest was being diverted
to other purposes. This is
not proper. Is it still going
on?
This CRR was used to
fund the Kangaroo Point
Pump Out Facility, where
boats on the Hawkesbury
go to have their sewerage
pumped ashore to holding
tanks. Surely this cost
should not have been
spread over all rate payers
by the CRR, but should
have been met entirely by
the boat owning fraternity.
Or possibly a loan from
the CRR, repayable over 10
years by boat owners
might have been more
equitable.
It has been used for
stormwater recycling
projects. While these
projects are no doubt
admirable I don’t think
such use is within the
purpose for which the
money is collected.
For the above reasons,
while maintaining my
support in general, I
express some concern
about how the rate is being
used. I would ask our
Councillors to look
carefully at the possible
benefit of more frequent
street sweeping, and to
keep faith with us
ratepayers by ensuring that
every cent collected is used
only for the purpose for
which it is collected.
I understand that many
animals using the Halal
method. It is also
understood that many
halal method of killing.
This procedure is cruel,
and the meat stinks quite
literarily. Why does an
animal’s throat need to be
slit and allowed to bleed
to death while the animal
is still alive? It is
inhumane.
Dr. R. Pohl
(address withheld by
Sir,
On 14 August 2001
Hornsby Councillors and
staff met with CSR who
offered to withdraw their
application to acquire
their Hornsby quarry on a
‘win win’ basis. One
proposal was Council
agree to allow CSR to fill
their quarry and rezone 6
hectares of their site for
housing, then CSR would
give Hornsby Council the
filled quarry, its
surrounding lands for
open space in return.
Instead Council paid
CSR $25.1 million and
now has to restore the
quarry and surrounding
lands.
Whilst knowing this for
over 5 years Council is still
refusing to release the
instructions to its solicitors
explaining why this
happened.
On 14 August 2006
former Mayor John
Muirhead indicated
Hornsby Council had
banked on selling the
quarry site to recoup the
costs should the price
reach $25 million.
The situation now is
that; after eight years
Council admits the quarry
must be filled. It will be
by road. It is estimated it
may take 50 to 100 years.
Has Council paid CSR
$25.1 million that it did
not have to do? And once
again, resolved to ask the
community what should
be done?
Councillors should
direct council staff to
release the legal
documents explaining
what went wrong.
Peter Waite
Pennant Hills
Sir,
Last year, Hornsby
Council hired the
consultants Bang the
Table ‘to provided a
platform for Hornsby Shire
Council to engage its
community about the
rehabilitation of a disused
quarry’.
I am flummoxed by
Bang the Table’s
conclusions that ‘The
consultation gave Council
confidence that the majority
of the community were
comfortable proceeding with
the rehabilitation process
and that the views expressed
through the local media
were not representative of
the ‘silent majority’ of
locals’.
Can anyone enlighten
me, what exactly is this
rehabilitation process that
Hornsby Council is
proceeding with?
Also, what were the
views that were expressed
through the local media
that were not
representative of the ‘silent
majority’ of locals?
If Council has the
psychic powers to know
all the ‘ views’ of this
‘silent majority’ then there
is no need to waste our
money hiring consultants.
A. Bruins
Hornsby
Sir,
We require a decision to
be made on the F3/M2
tunnel.
Currently we have
Philip Ruddock and Greg
Smith vacillating on the
subject of the F3/M2
Tunnel. They are calling
for the construction of a
tunnel, or a genuine
western orbital or a
combination of both
options. I would have
expected them to be more
politically astute and
realise that throwing every
option on the table to
Infrastructure Australia
will not advance finding a
real solution for the
missing link in our
national highway. This is
not the decisive leadership
we need from our elected
representatives and this is
something both parties
have lacked over the last
forty years. Too much time
is taken planning strategies
to remain in power at the
expense of responsible
development.
It is now 2 years since
Hon. Marla Pearlman,
completed a review of the
tunnel options and
recommended that
planning for the western
option commence
immediately. We are still
waiting on this planning to
commence.
The western option offers
demonstrably more
benefits and opportunities
for both road and rail
transport than the ‘no
solution’ tunnel and
should be rigorously
pursued with visionary
leadership by our elected
representatives. They
should ensure that the “No
Solution” tunnel is
removed from the
infrastructure agenda
forever. We deserve the
road and rail link that will
take our state into the
future.
Michael Stove
Beecroft
Sir,
I am sure the quarry is
at the forefront of our
minds, since we all have
our rate notices. The
preference for parkland on
the site is not only sensible
but also risk averse
because of expert opinion
on the danger of
subsidence. If Council
had been prudent and
insisted on remediation
by CSR, then the long
suffering rate payers would
not be footing this bill, so
do not expose us to any
more financial burdens
like compensation.
EORGE MOVES ON
George Papallo
George Papallo, Chief
Executive Officer of
Macquarie Community
College, is retiring after
15 years of most
meritorious service.
When he arrived the
college was struggling to
stay afloat. He leaves with
it being the most
successful college in NSW,
EMORIES OF PNG RE-KINDLED
Pennant Hills author,
Ken Wighton whose
excellent first novel
Endless Dream was
reviewed in our May
edition has received
unexpected praise of his
ork from former radio
guru, John Laws.
Ken sent a copy to Mr.
Laws knowing that he had
been born in Wau in 1934
and evacuated with his
sister and mother at the
beginning of WW11, first
to Port Moresby and then
to Australia aboard the
Katoomba, in much the
same way as Ken’s
if not Australia – a great
credit to him.
Early in his service,
George organised the
purchase of the
Carlingford Infants School
from the Education
Department and paid off
the borrowings on time, at
the same time he oversaw
renovations of the old
buildings into prime
condition.
A successful consortium
brought a large number of
students into the
Australian Government’s
Adult Migrant English
Program to give migrants
basic English so they could
be employed. This has
been most successful.
This year the College
boasts over 9,000 students
in 1,200 courses on 300
sites.
George arranged with
Ryde Council to restore
character, Beth.
In reply, John Laws
writes:
“I am sure you have
brought back many
memories to people who
remember fondly or
otherwise of New Guinea. I
must say I only remember
it fondly, very fondly. Going
to school in Wau, dancing
around the maypole which
the school used to hold,
crossing the creek in Wau
to go back to my house,
which was beneath the
trading store called
Greenwood and Laws, the
Laws obviously being my
The Parsonage at Top Ryde
at the College’s expense
with a concession rent for
15 years. It looks great
and it is used extensively.
Some years ago, he took
over the college at
Chatswood which was in
administration and he
expanded its work
dramatically. He also
negotiated the purchase of
a floor in a building near
the western entrance to
and from the railway and
the College is now
digesting the opportunities
arising from this.
George has supported as
many community activities
as possible, of which : Ryde
Business Forum; Ryde
Eisteddfod; Granny Smith
Festival; Christian
Community Aid and
Gladesville Fun Run are
but a few.
George sees this as the
father. It was close to the
picture theatre, which was
on the corner of the street.
I can remember it all so
clearly and could draw you
a plan of the house and
garden even now!”
Mr. Laws recalls many of
the places mentioned in the
novel and at least one
character, the publican,
Mrs. Stewart
“You talk of Mrs. Stewart,
who owned the top pub. I
presume that’s Ma Stewart,
who I think also owned the
pub in Lae or Salamoa.”
He recalls his short time
in PNG as the happiest of
ARDEN STUDENTS
OFFER HOSPITALITY
Year 11 Hospitality
tudents from Arden
chool worked alongside
taff from the Epping
lub to organise and host
he prestigious annual
illSip Awards for
ocational Excellence on
Wednesday, August 19.
This was made possible
through the Adopt-A-
School project, supported
by the Epping Club and
sponsored by HillSip, an
organisation that links
workplaces with students
studying TAFE accredited
courses at school.
The students were
involved in every facet of
the event from planning to
serving the guests.
BOUNDARY CHANGES
To ensure equal
representation,
periodically, the
Australian Electoral
Commission (AEC) is
forced, through
population growth and
distribution, to adjust
electorate boundaries.
This process has now
been completed for
Federal electorates in NSW
and some changes have
occurred locally.
appropriate time to change
his vision and to focus on
his work for Rotary as
District Governor of
District 9680 in 2010-
2011.
The College and
community thank George
for a job well done and
trust that his years of
service to the community
through Rotary will be as
successful and enjoyable as
those spent at Macquarie
Community College.
his life and concludes
“Thank you for your
reminder of it all, even
though it saddens me, it
brings back wonderful
memories. Thank you.”
SALUTING OUR SUBURBS - BEECROFT
EECROFT- One of Sydney’ Hidden Treasures A Recollection by Trevor Patrick
Beverley and I came to
eecroft in 1965 when we
urchased Dan Finlay’s
arlisle Crescent home.
an recalled an incident
n his time of living in the
rea.
“I was always interested
n numbers and had the
obby of remembering
otor vehicle number
lates. One afternoon, I
oticed a new vehicle
arked in Hannah Street
nd mentally filed the
umber. Police came to my
ouse that evening
nquiring if our house had
een broken into, since
here had been a series of
urglaries that day. I was
ble to recall the number
nd description of the
trange vehicle and on
nvestigation, the police
ade an arrest.”
Carlisle Crescent was
ined with brick veneer
omes the construction
ystem of which became
opular following the
herrybrook Homes
xhibition promoted by the
aster Builders Association
nd Australian Woman’s
eekly.
Each house was on a
quarter acre of land which
was particularly fertile.
The reason for the
fertility was that the
Byrne’s Dairy had
previously occupied the
site and there was an
abundance of manure
added to the soil over the
years. Our block flourished
with macadamia nut,
lemon, mandarin and fig
trees along with a variety
of camellias.
The Beecroft shops
offered an interesting range
of services in the 1960s.
Over time some of the
businesses moved location
whilst others simply
closed.
Beecroft Pharmacy had
the distinction of having
telephone number ‘one’
when the service to the
district commenced.
Pharmacist Fred
Westerly developed a
product called Rustiban.
The formula was a strong
acid that dissolved the red
stain of rust in fabrics.
Sadly the product is no
longer available.
HANNAH STREET
The Bank of New South
Wales was located second
shop from the corner of
Hannah Street and Beecroft
Road in the early days. The
building was modernised
and became Westpac when
the corporate name was
changed. Financial change
saw the bank leave the
suburb and a retail
clothing shop now
occupies the building.
The Post Office was on
the corner of Hannah
Street and Beecroft Road
opposite the Bank of New
South Wales until sold and
the business moved into
the Arcade.
The Children’s
Bookshop started in a
quaint building on
Wongala Crescent near the
Fire Station until
demolished. A move to
Hannah Street offered
larger premises and books
to please everyone.
Stuuts chain of
hairdressers began in the
Hannah Street shop with a
store at Pennant Hills and
Round Corner- Dural.
BEECROFT ROAD
Brian McGill managed
the Shell garage on
Beecroft Road until it was
closed and demolished. A
garage was on this site
from 1929
BEECROFT ARCADE
A dry cleaner operated
in the shop facing Hannah
Street with Serendipity gifts
next door offering
beautiful glass and ceramic
figurines amongst
hundreds of intriguing
object d’art.
Henry Butler maintained
a pet shop where birds and
goldfish attracted young
children who would ask to
take one home.
For the athletic person,
Kay and Jeanette offered a
range of tennis wear and
equipment in a shop at the
top of the ramp leading
from the car park.
The Merchant of Tennis
shop followed and still
operates in the arcade.
Mrs Sage conducted a
successful business titled
Scan offering a beautiful
range of local and
imported gifts. The aroma
of fresh baked cakes and
especially hot apple pies
from the corner bakehouse
added to the attraction of
shopping in the Arcade.
Woodside Meat Service
seemed an unusual name
for the butcher shop in the
arcade. The owner was
American and had come
from Woodside USA and
kept the name as a
reminder.
James Denny owned the
pharmacy in the Arcade on
the eastern side
WONGALA CRESCENT
Mr & Mrs McPherson
opened an antique store on
Wongala Crescent in two
adjoining shops which
have seen a number of
different businesses
including a butcher and a
grocer. Today, one side is
home to The Art of Hair,
the other to Chicken &
Fish Head café.
Sparks Shoes holds
claim to being the longest
serving business in the
suburb.
There are two
supermarkets serving the
suburb with Franklins in
the Module and IGA in the
Arcade.
A boutique garden
nursery in Hannah Street
supplied many a home
with colorful border plants
and herbs for the kitchen
garden.
In recent times Graham
Ross invigorated the local
passion for gardening with
a display centre on
unfortunately closed due
to some bureaucratic
decision.
for recreation to the
people of Cheltenham.
The property has a
unique historical
background as its roots are
linked with the earliest
colonial days in New
South Wales.
In 1790, Surgeon John
Harris of the NSW Corps
arrived in Sydney aboard
H.M.S. Surprise. In 1800 he
became Magistrate of the
City of Sydney, then Naval
Officer-in-Charge of the
Port of Sydney. He was
granted 100 acres of land
at Parramatta and part of
this inheritance passed to
his great, great grand
nephew, Mr. William
Harris.
In 1906, Edensor
Cheltenham became the
home of the Harris family.
At the Club’s inception,
croquet was played, to be
followed by Lawn bowls
for gentlemen and forty
years later the ladies’ club
formed. There are now two
bowling greens, two
croquet lawns and six
tennis courts, two of
which are under lights.
Thus the Club provides a
range of competitive, social
and family activity.
Cheltenham Recreation
Club Ltd has fostered
many successful sportsmen
and women since it was
founded in 1913. It is
more than ‘just a club’.
The latest addition to
Beecroft Village Arcade is
a new hairdressing salon,
Par Excellence offering
family hair services at
family prices.
For owner, Adam Hajal
‘family’ is the key word to
his professional life as he
literally grew up in the
hair and beauty industry.
“My parents have owned
and operated a ‘School of
Cosmetology’ in Jerusalem
since I was a child, and
they recently opened a
Hair and Beauty store in
Leon, Spain. So I could
hardly avoid this career
path,” Adam said with a
smile.
Adam has worked with
most of the popular hair
colours, hair care and
styling brands like L’Oreal,
Schwarzkopf, Goldwell,
Wella and Keune
He developed his
professional skills and
knowledge travelling
throughout Europe before
moving to the USA where
he worked for the Regis
Corporation, the world’s
largest operator of hair
salons with more than
13,600 company owned or
franchised salons.
He settled in Scottsdale,
Cheltenham Recreation Club today
Arizona and, while there,
obtained his license in
Cosmetology from the
Arizona State Board of
Cosmetolgy.
“The key for success is
never stop learning, as
fashion changes,
techniques change,” Adam
said.
During his four years in
the USA, Adam worked
both as a hairdresser and
an artistic trainer in
hairdressing workshops in
Scarsdale and Las Vegas.
At Par Excellence Adam
aims to provide the best
possible hairdressing at
family prices for all
members of the family –
mum, dad and the
children.
Services on offer cover
BEECROFT IN BLOOM - SEPTEMBER 18-20
ARASOLS RATHER THAN UMBRELLAS
Traditionally, Beecroft
in Bloom, Beecroft’s
celebration of Spring has
een held on the first
aturday of September.
or the last three years
he event has been more
ike Beecroft in Deluge
nd so in an attempt to
void the bad weather,
his year, organisers,
Beecroft – Cheltenham
Lions Club and Beecroft
Business Group, have
gone for a broader format
and have moved the
celebrations to later in the
month.
This year Beecroft in
Bloom will commence with
a Cocktail Party to open a
week long Art Show on
Friday evening, September
18.
The Art exhibition will
be held in vacant premises
on the upper level of
Beecroft Module Shopping
Centre and will run for a
full week.
The following day,
Saturday, September 19,
Beecroft will come alive
with flower displays, street
theatre, street music,
displays and activities
throughout the shopping
precinct.
There’ll be face painting,
jumping castle, a fire
engine display and an
animal farm for the kids.
There’ll be sausages
sizzling, tastings, bargains
EAL ESTATE - BOOM OR BUST?
In the face of the
epressing ‘global
conomic meltdown’ local
eal estate Principal,
teven Evans of Beecroft
eal Estate and BRE
latinum, (the prestige
ivision of Beecroft Real
state) and grandson of
eecroft’s original agent,
.G. Hurst (see photo) is
he bearer of good news!
“We are BOOMING and
o are prices!!!,” Steve
nthusiastically claimed.
“We are experiencing a
assive shortage of good
uality homes on the
arket FOR SALE now,
nd the bank up in
emand is forcing prices
higher!,” he said.
Steve and the team at
Beecroft Real Estate have
been serving the
community for almost 20
years and their current
results are astounding,
defying the so called
‘Global Economic Crisis’ -
(there’s simply too many
examples to list, however
Steve is more than happy
to share those results
upon request).
“ I think it comes down
to doing the basics better,
treating every client like
you would like to be
treated yourself, and
providing the type of
service that continues to
achieve record results. We
have a great team of multi
- lingual speaking staff
offering Mandarin,
Cantonese, French,
Italian, and English
languages. We have
identified that this service
ensures we have the
marketplace covered for
every aspect and specific
target market
demographic,” Steve said.
Steve currently holds
the record for the lowest
‘Average Days On
market’, (i.e. the time it
takes to sell a property),
and sale price achieved.
“We are selling
properties faster, for more
money, and have never
had so many tokens of
gratitude from our happy
clients, who really are the
toughest judges of our
service and results. We
keep things really simple
and offer things our
competitors simply cannot
match,” Steve said as he
happily offered these tips
for marketing and buying
real estate.
When you are selling
your home: find an agent
who believes your home is
as valuable as you do;
who will treat you like
you are his only client;
who can provide you with
at least 6 recent
and giveaways.
There’ll be a chance to
take a trip down Memory
Lane with the Ray Park
Heritage Group’s display of
historical photographs and
memorabilia.
And, there’ll be a chance
to steal a march on the
upcoming season’s fashions
with an elegant Fashion
testimonial letters from
satisfied clients; who has
at least a decade of
experience and is not
learning a ‘new trade’ on
your valuable asset, and
most importantly has a
proven strategy that will
get your home SOLD
within 28 days.
The agent will need to
provide you with factual
sales figures and be able
to give you a 100%
GUARANTEE to prove to
you that he can market
your property more
comprehensively than the
Parade in the Village
Arcade.
This year, for the first
time, the celebration will
carry over to Sunday with
a fabulous Street Market,
including some organic
produce, in Hannah Street
and as a finale to the
festivities a great Charity
Auction will be held in the
other agents you are
considering.
The reason why this is
crucially important is that
the simple fact is… time
equals money. The longer
the property stays on the
market for sale, the
greater the erosion of
confidence is in the value
of the property being
offered, and hence the
opportunity of achieving a
premium price rapidly
diminishes as time goes
by. The reverse is true
when buying.
Steve laughs as he
afternoon at Ray White,
Real Estate in the Module
Centre.
All monies raised during
Beecroft in Bloom will be
applied by the Lions Club
to local charities and
projects.
Rain, hail or shine
Beecroft in Bloom is
always a friendly, family
event and this year
hopefully you can pull out
a parasol and leave the
umbrella in the hallstand!
openly claims that he is
NOT the agent to see if
you are looking for a
bargain, but he does offer
a 100% guarantee for all
his clients selling their
property and he loves
looking after rental
property owners with
some ‘special conditions’
developed over decades to
protect the property
investor.
HERITAGE UNDER-FUNDED
This year, Hornsby
Shire Council received 21
applications requesting
over $600,000 in
assistance from the Local
Heritage Assistance Fund.
The fund had a budget of
just $60,000.
Clr Robert Browne who
is a member of the
Heritage Committee
sought support at the
meeting on August 5 to
have the funding increased
to $80,000 for the 2010/11
Budget. His colleagues
were unwilling to rush in
offering only an
undertaking to ‘consider’
the matter in due course.
Clr. Browne explained
that while, of this year’s
submissions, one was for
$200,000 for the
refurbishment of
commercial premises, of
the 21 applications only 12
heritage ‘listed’ properties
could be helped with the
greatest amount totaling
$20,000.
The meeting was
shadows in its past.
A free display in
Pennant Hills Library by
Hornsby Historical Society
from September 5 -13 will
explore the double murder
in Stevens Street in 1907,
investigations by ABC’s
Four Corners team which
led to the Royal
addressed by Mr. Robert
Olsen of Salamander Bay,
owner of the Vintage
Cellars premises (pictured)
at 100 Beecroft Road,
Beecroft, which he
described as an ‘in your
face’ landmark if you are
traveling north on the
road. He claimed that he
had approached Council
on three occasions for
assistance to restore the
building which represents
an excellent architectural
example of its period (circa
1908). On all occasions he
was disappointed. He
claimed hardship with the
ON’T JUST ‘STUMBLE IN’ By Bill Aitken
Chef, Con Constantine will set your tastebuds alight at
Thornleigh’s newest restaurant Stumble In
The last thing I wanted
to do after a busy week
was to dine out, but the
table was booked and we
were keen to sample the
fare at Thornleigh’s
newest restaurant,
Stumble In Bar and Grill
located just off Pennant
Hills Road, cnr. Bellevue
Street and Railway
Parade.
Being in a ‘grumble
bum’ frame of mind my
first complaint was ‘the
table is uneven’ – this was
easily overcome and I
relaxed back into the
comfortable padded tub
chair and surveyed the
décor.
Soft greens and muted
coloured walls are
complemented by the use
of sandstone in the bar
area and a selection of art
deco and period prints
offer conversation points.
The restaurant is intimate
(54 seated) and the food,
for once, lives up to its
claim of ‘fine dining’.
The fully licensed
restaurant offers a diverse
menu and an
Italian/European
influenced cuisine
masterminded by Chef,
Con Constantine who
gained his initial
experience and love of
food through his family’s
restaurants in various parts
of NSW.
Con qualified through
East Sydney Technical
College and went on to
work at The Stamford at
Sydney Airport before a
stint in Europe working at
restaurants in Paris, Italy
and Greece. Back in
Sydney he furthered his
career at the popular
Industrie in the city and at
Newtown’s Urban Bites.
My entrée of Salt and
Pepper Squid was to die
for! Served with aloli and
beautifully presented on a
bed of leaves and with
Con’s own sauce, the
generous serving of lightly
battered, tender squid was
delicious.
My partner was equally
effusive about the Seared
Scallops served with lemon
zested butter sauce.
For our main course I
chose the Stumble in Platter
– lamb, chicken and beef
souvlaki served with chips,
Greek salad, peppers, pita
bread and tzaziki. I was
The Salt and Pepper Squid is to die for!
ambitious. The serving was
huge and full of freshness
and flavour. My partner’s
Barramundi Nicoise –
served with green beans,
Spanish onion and cherry
tomatoes topped with olive
tapenade appeared mouth
watering and neither of us
had room left for the menu
of desserts displayed on
the blackboard.
Stumble In Bar and
Grill also offers a selection
of pasta and risotto dishes
and salads and has both a
side menu and kids’ menu.
While it does not offer
BYO, wine and bar prices
are in line with
expectations. Our bill
including drinks came to
$94.00 and we believed
that this was great value
for the standard of food we
experienced.
The restaurant is open
for dinner Tuesday –
Sunday for dinner until
5pm – 10pm and lunch
Wednesday – Friday noon
– 2.30pm.
Don’t just ‘stumble in’
as the restaurant is filling
fast as word spreads,
Staff Changes at Westleigh
Arminae Carapetian, who has been one of the staff
optometrists at Westleigh for several years, has now gone on
maternity leave following the birth of her baby daughter
recently. This is her third child, as she already has two young
sons.
Arminae will be away until further notice. As a result, we
currently do not have an optometrist attending Westleigh on
Mondays. Steve McGowan will still be working full time at
Westleigh from Tuesday to Saturday each week.
David Hendry is working full time at Berowra. Some of his
Westleigh patients are travelling to Berowra to see him,
although there is waiting time of about four weeks at present
O.C.T is coming to
David J Hendry
Optometrists !
O.C.T. (or Optical
Coherence Tomography)
is coming to our Berowra
Heights practice in the
near future. This method
of examination of the
ocular tissues, which are
mainly at the back of the
eye, allows for more accurate and earlier diagnosis of various
ocular diseases including glaucoma, macular degeneration and
diabetic retinopathy as well as other less well-known
conditions. Our Westleigh patients who require this
technology will be referred to the Berowra practice for
examination.
The Carl Zeiss Meditec “Cirrus” HD-OCT is the current
instrument of choice for retinal disease diagnosis and early
diagnosis of nerve fibre changes in glaucoma. HD-OCT
image is a high-definition cross sectional view that reveals
subtle details of the pathology.
The new instrument will be the most expensive technology
purchase that we have ever made for either of our practices.
Examinations with this instrument are not covered under bulkbilling
through the Medicare system. The Medicare rebate for
eye examinations is not generous, and has only been
increasing by an average of about 1% per annum over the 25
years since Medicare was introduced in 1984.
For further information regarding OCT and its
applications please ask Steve McGowan at David J
a truly beautiful piece of
porcelain comes in for sale.
Recently we had a Royal
Worcester lidded pot up for
sale in our 2 day Antique &
Quality Auction, hand painted by the famous artist Harry
Stinton. The Stinton family was renowned for their famous
Highland Cattle and Game bird scenes and is probably the
best known of all the Royal Worcester artists, with four
generations of the family painting at various Worcester
factories for almost one hundred and sixty years.
In 1883, Harry Stinton was born. Harry followed in his
father’s footsteps painting Highland cattle scenes but with
more purple and autumnal tints to make his work stand out
from his father’s products. He suffered from many
childhood illnesses that kept him frequently in hospital but
he joined the factory in 1896 and obviously benefited from
the experience as he grew into an imposing figure that
many people likened both to his father and to the highland
cattle that they both painted.
For four generations, and one hundred and fifty eight years
the Stintons were represented at the Worcester factories.
Their work will be collected and revered for many more
generations to come.
and members have been
prominent with assistance
on Daffodil Day and Anzac
contributions were made
to the Victorian bushfire
victims and the Club has
expanded its work in East
Timor and Aceh. It is now
building a children’s
hospital in Sierra Leone.
In accepting the Shield,
outgoing President Peter
OSPITAL TAGGED ‘A SLUM’
On August 18, health
rofessionals were
eported as comparing
ornsby Hospital to a
lum and Member for
ornsby, Judy Hopwood,
mmediately challenged
ealth Minister, John
ella Bosca, to explain
hy.
One of the hospital’s
hief surgeons described
he hospital as ‘medieval
nd offensive.’
“Since my election in
002, I have called on a
eries of Labor Health
inisters to upgrade, or at
he very least maintain,
arious sections of
ornsby Hospital,” Mrs
opwood said.
She cited numerous
nstances of under-funding
or equipment and horror
tories from patients and
heir families of the poor
physical condition of
wards, including cracked
walls, failed air
conditioning, and a
generally dirty
environment.
“Over the years
services, such as thoracic
surgery, have gradually
been cut from the hospital,
as part of the so-called
rationalisation of the
Northern Area Health
Service.
“And surgeons have
described their despair at
being expected to perform
state-of- the-art procedures
in third-world operating
theatres. And they tell me
they have been given little
opportunity to have their
concerns heard at the
hospital decision-making
level.
“Sadly, most patients are
afraid to speak to media
proudly holds the Shield for
the most outstanding large
club awarded by District
Governor, Tony Castley while
fellow Rotarians display other
awards and achievements
received by the club.
for fear their treatment
may suffer, and health
workers are also fearful of
being targeted as
troublesome
whistleblowers.
“This hospital serves a
population that is
burgeoning, because the
State Government insists
on housing more people in
this region, yet the
infrastructure has not been
provided to support the
growth.
“The Health Minister
obviously needs to start
taking notice of what we
have been calling for for
years. The slow downgrade
of Hornsby Hospital must
be reversed and health
professionals need to be
closely consulted during
the process to ensure
things are done properly
once and for all.” Mrs
Hopwood concluded.
The Children’s Hospital,
Westmead and all proceeds
will go towards research
TAKING THE PRESSURE OFF
DIABETES
By John Bell
National Diabetes Week has again focused our
attention on the fastest growing non-infectious
disease in the world. And this year there is
special emphasis on the association between
diabetes and high blood pressure.
Uncontrolled diabetes poses a serious risk to our
health. Complications can include blindness,
kidney failure and increased risk of heart disease
and stroke.
Diabetes is the name given to the condition
where our body is unable to use glucose
properly – and glucose is our major energy
source; the fuel which keeps our body
functioning effectively.
There are two major forms of diabetes – type 1
and type 2.
Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in childhood or
young adulthood – possibly because the body’s
immune system runs a bit wild and attacks and
destroys the insulin-producing cells in the
pancreas gland. Because the body stops making
insulin, people with this form of diabetes need
daily doses of insulin.
However, type 2 diabetes is the form of diabetes
likely to affect most Australians (in type 2,
insulin is produced, but we just can’t use it
effectively). It accounts for 85-90% of the more
than a million Australians with the condition –
a number that could double over the next 10
years or so, if control strategies are not put in
place.
Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in older adults –
it used to be called maturity onset diabetes –
but increasingly the condition is affecting
younger people. Family history is one reason.
Of course our parents are not totally to blame.
Family history is just one risk factor. Lifestyle
issues are also highly significant. Overweight
and obese adults are two to four times more
likely to suffer from diabetes.
We now know that high blood pressure is
another major risk factor for diabetes; a factor
which is apparently not widely understood.
According to Dr Neville Howard, President of
Diabetes Australia – NSW, “there is a staggering
lack of awareness about the link between high
blood pressure and developing diabetes and its
serious complications.”
“While most people are aware that family
history and being overweight can put them at
risk,” he said, “a Diabetes Australia Study
conducted last year has shown that 90% of
people surveyed did not know that high blood
pressure was a risk factor.”
When blood pressure is measured, two reading
are taken; and it is usually expressed as one
larger number over another. The top reading
(so-called systolic blood pressure) is a measure
of the force of the heartbeat. The lower reading
(diastolic) is a measure of the blood pressure
when the heart is at rest between beats.
There is no “ideal” blood pressure – it will vary
from person to person; but as a guide the target
blood pressure is less than or equal to 130/80.
Lifestyle changes are the key to reducing the
risks of and treating high blood pressure, said
Dr Howard. This should involve healthy eating,
regular exercise, drinking lots of water, reduced
salt intake, alcohol in moderation (no more than
two standard drinks per day) and no smoking.
Most of us will also need to lose some weight
around our waist line. The aim should be a
waist circumference of less than 80cm for
women and 94cm for men.
And every time we visit the doctor we should
get our blood pressure checked. If we seem
otherwise healthy, we should make sure we have
at least a yearly check up, especially if we’re over
40.
You may have noticed
that emails can be sent in
plain text or HTML. It
will seem to the ordinary
person like some sort of
gobbledygook, so I
thought I would explain it
to you with a short
anecdote.
One of our clients rang
because she has attached
her business information
and contact details to each
of her outgoing emails.
When she looked at them
in the Sent Items all the
special features she had
added like a special font in
a larger size and the colour
blue had disappeared – the
details were still there but
they were very plain. This
is because the message had
been sent in plain text –
like a typewriter perhaps.
What she needed to do
was send it in HTML
which would mean that
the special features she
wanted would be
displayed. So I took her
through what she needed
temporary premises in
Howson Oval at South
Turramurra.
The Council will
continue working with
representatives of The
Shed Inc to progress the
project, which is estimated
to cost $132,000.
Construction of the
facility could begin in late
2009 and be completed by
late 2010.
“The Shed representatives
are seeking funds
from the NSW
Government’s Community
Building Partnership
Program, which will
to do. In Outlook this
meant going to Tools,
Options, Mail Format. In
the box following the
words Compose in this
message format, she was to
tick on the drop down
arrow and choose HTML.
If this had been Outlook
Express, then she would
have had to go to Tools,
Options, Send and make
sure that HTML was ticked
where it says mail sending
format.
In Thunderbird which
is my program of choice a
message comes up anyway
asking how you want to
send the message and you
can then choose – this
option can be found in
Tools, Options,
Composition, General,
Send Options. When
sending mail messages in
HTML format and one or
more recipients are not
listed as being able to
receive HTML Ask me what
to do is the option you
need to click on.
Hope this clears this
issue up for you.
and there are no specific
make sure that you don’t
attach this signature when
you are sending a
complaining email to a
More about emails.
Another of our clients
was having trouble
sending emails. They
would stay in the Outbox
and never appear in the
Sent Items. So he kept
sending them and the
recipients were getting lots
of the same emails. This is
a problem caused by
people keeping too many
emails in their folders. So
we deleted lots and lots
and bingo! The problem
was solved.
Be warned, some older
versions of Outlook and
Outlook Express have a
limit on the sizes of all
folders combined! When
this limit is reached, you
can’t add or delete!
ATURE NOTES
SHOW BIZ WILDLIFE
I just can’t help myself:
whenever there’s a bird
inging in the background
f a television program I
ave to call out, “That’s a
o-and-so.” My wife sighs
nd occasionally adds a
weary, “Yes, Dear.”
We tend to watch the
egular ABC Friday
vening British crime
eries. Having lived in
ngland I can identify the
Willow Warblers,
haffinches and
ightingales whose calls
re often used to add
onviction to pictures of
dyllic, lush countryside.
ut shortly before a
urder is committed -
early always at night - a
ox screams. The noise is
resumably to add a
inister touch: to raise the
airs on the viewer’s neck.
t doesn’t work on me
owever, because I just
now that fox is going to
cream. It always does. I
ait for it: it’s so
redictable.
Once, on a whodunit
aking place in Ireland, a
reen Woodpecker called.
o my certain knowledge
oodpeckers aren’t found
n Ireland. And then there
as that migratory Cuckoo
inging in the middle of
he winter when the voice’s
with Nick Hodges
owner would have been
sunning itself in Africa.
A few years ago I went
to the Sydney Opera
House to see Shakespeare’s,
As You Like It,
which takes place in the
Forest of Arden, just up
the road from the author’s
home town of Stratford
upon Avon. The set was
stunning: all dappled
glades and shady bowers.
As for the sound effects: I
expected to hear some of
the British species
mentioned above. Instead
there was a cacophony of
Australian bird calls:
whistlers and whipbirds.
I glanced around
expecting to see the
audience clutching its
collective sides, consumed
with uncontrollable
laughter. But, of course,
nobody understood (or
probably cared). To a man
(or woman) they were
entranced.
I know that at times I
need to ‘suspend my
disbelief’ but kookaburras
cackling in England’s green
and pleasant land?
Ridiculous! Impossible!
STEP
OUT
STEP Inc, a Ku-ringgai
based organisation
dedicated to
environmental
conservation, will hold a
bushwalk on the Elvina
Track near West Head, in
Ku-ring-gai Chase
National Park on Sunday,
September 20 (12.45pm
for 1pm start).
• Welcome to Spring!
Everything is going
gangbusters in the
garden! So...here are a
few tips and ideas for
the next few weeks:
• I mentioned Tomatoes
last month – it’s time to
plant NOW – look for the NEW
Tomatoberry - it looks like a strawberry &
tastes like a juicy sweet tomato!
• Plant bean seed – climbing can be grown
around a bamboo tepee – even in the flower
garden. Most other summer veggies can be
planted now: - silver beet, zucchini, egg plant,
peppers (chilli and sweet), sweet corn, beetroot,
radish and lettuce.
The Federal
Government’s stimulus
package of free home
insulation up to $1600
has drawn some adverse
criticism in recent media
reports with claims of
unqualified installers,
unsubstantiated charges
up to the $1600 cap and
even operators installing
insulation over existing
insulation.
Therefore, it is wise to
choose a company with a
track record in the
building industry and one
which only employs fully
accredited installers.
Such a company locally
is Thornleigh based,
BuildSense Insulations a
division of BuildSense
Solutions which has
operated in Sydney’s
northern suburbs for 27
years.
“All of our work is by
referral and we pride
ourselves on offering
genuine, honest and
professional building
services for renovations,
general building work,”
said Principal, Joe Antoun.
hungry plants every 6 weeks or so. Spray
fortnightly with ‘eco-rose’ alternating with a milk
