This leaflet aims to give you basic<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about the types of help<br />

available and how you can get this help.<br />

Improv<strong>in</strong>g access for black and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic communities.


All the services are confidential<br />

and will be happy to see you.<br />

You do not need a referral from<br />

your doctor or other professional.<br />

All the services <strong>in</strong> this leaflet can arrange<br />

for an <strong>in</strong>terpreter to come along to your<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment if they know <strong>in</strong> advance<br />

which language you speak.<br />

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT<br />

If you are comfortable mak<strong>in</strong>g an appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>in</strong> English a direct phone<br />

number is given for each service.<br />

If<br />

you would prefer the help of<br />

an <strong>in</strong>terpreter to arrange an<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment this can be arranged<br />

by the services with a .<br />

COMMUNITY ADDICTION TEAMS (CATS)<br />

These services have been set up <strong>in</strong><br />

local areas, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together health<br />

and social work <strong>addiction</strong> services<br />

with<strong>in</strong> one s<strong>in</strong>gle team.<br />

Staff will support, advise and assist you<br />

to th<strong>in</strong>k about the ways <strong>in</strong> which alcohol<br />

or drugs are affect<strong>in</strong>g your life, those<br />

around you and those you have<br />

responsibility for.<br />

This will <strong>in</strong>volve an assessment, which will<br />

decide what treatment and support you may<br />

need. This could mean <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g doctors,<br />

psychiatrists, psychologists or other agencies.<br />

After this assessment they may arrange<br />

hospital care or residential rehabilitation if<br />

needed. A specific service is also available<br />

for young people (12 – 21), and to support<br />

families and carers.<br />

BLACK & MINORITY ETHNIC (BME) DRUG & ALCOHOL SERVICE<br />

This specific service is based at the<br />

South Community Addiction Team<br />

and is delivered by workers from BME<br />

communities who can provide a direct<br />

service <strong>in</strong> English, Punjabi and Urdu.<br />

The workers can also provide the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g range of services – Adults,<br />

Young People (12 – 21), Family Support<br />

and Support to Carer’s.<br />

Although based <strong>in</strong> the South area, the service<br />

has a city wide remit and can therefore<br />

provide a service to you regardless of what<br />

area you live <strong>in</strong>.<br />

SMOKING CONCERNS<br />

Giv<strong>in</strong>g up smok<strong>in</strong>g is not easy but there<br />

is lots of help available <strong>in</strong> Glasgow if you<br />

really want to stop.<br />

STOP SMOKING GROUPS<br />

Groups run <strong>in</strong> local areas <strong>in</strong> the city:<br />

they are relaxed, <strong>in</strong>formal, free & one of<br />

the best ways to quit. These groups are<br />

generally run <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

ONE TO ONE SUPPORT<br />

Smok<strong>in</strong>g Concerns also offer one to one<br />

support from a stop smok<strong>in</strong>g advisor <strong>in</strong> your<br />

local area.<br />

STARTING FRESH PHARMACY<br />

Over 200 pharmacies (chemists) <strong>in</strong> Glasgow<br />

can help you stop with 1 to 1 support.<br />

Look for the ‘Start<strong>in</strong>g Fresh’ w<strong>in</strong>dow sticker<br />

and drop <strong>in</strong> for help to quit. Some of these<br />

pharmacies have staff who can offer a direct<br />

service <strong>in</strong> a number of languages.<br />

GLASGOW COUNCIL ON ALCOHOL (GCA)<br />

GCA helps people who are<br />

experienc<strong>in</strong>g problems related to<br />

their own or someone else’s dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Alcohol Counsell<strong>in</strong>g Centre provides<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual, confidential counsell<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

people with alcohol problems and their<br />

partners/families. In addition there are<br />

two counsellors for young people.<br />

Counsell<strong>in</strong>g aims to help you identify and<br />

deal with the problems you feel you have.<br />

It consists of a series of private meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

between you and your counsellor to talk<br />

through your problems.<br />

Counsell<strong>in</strong>g is offered from a City Centre<br />

office or from offices <strong>in</strong> Drumchapel, Yoker,<br />

East End, East Dunbartonshire and<br />

Rutherglen/Cambuslang.<br />

GLASGOW DRUG CRISIS CENTRE<br />

The centre is open 24 hours a day and<br />

offers advice <strong>in</strong>formation, assessment<br />

and support to<br />

people with a drug<br />

related problem.<br />

The centre also has a 24-hour needle<br />

exchange and a 12 bed emergency short<br />

stay facility for people who are not cop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the <strong>community</strong>.<br />

The centre does not offer long term<br />

counsell<strong>in</strong>g or advocacy work.<br />
