This leaflet aims to give you basic
information about the types of help
available and how you can get this help.
Improving access for black and minority ethnic communities.

All the services are confidential
and will be happy to see you.
You do not need a referral from
your doctor or other professional.
All the services in this leaflet can arrange
for an interpreter to come along to your
appointment if they know in advance
which language you speak.
MAKING AN APPOINTMENT
If you are comfortable making an appointment in English a direct phone
number is given for each service.

you would prefer the help of
an interpreter to arrange an
appointment this can be arranged
by the services with a .

and someone who speaks your

Services with a provide a
service where you can go directly
to the project and they will arrange
a time to see you.

COMMUNITY ADDICTION TEAMS (CATS)
These services have been set up in
local areas, bringing together health
and social work addiction services
within one single team.
Staff will support, advise and assist you
to think about the ways in which alcohol
or drugs are affecting your life, those
around you and those you have
responsibility for.
This will involve an assessment, which will
decide what treatment and support you may
need. This could mean involving doctors,
psychiatrists, psychologists or other agencies.
After this assessment they may arrange
hospital care or residential rehabilitation if
needed. A specific service is also available
for young people (12 – 21), and to support
families and carers.

BLACK & MINORITY ETHNIC (BME) DRUG & ALCOHOL SERVICE
This specific service is based at the
South Community Addiction Team
and is delivered by workers from BME
communities who can provide a direct
service in English, Punjabi and Urdu.
The workers can also provide the
following range of services – Adults,
Young People (12 – 21), Family Support
and Support to Carer’s.
Although based in the South area, the service
has a city wide remit and can therefore
provide a service to you regardless of what
area you live in.

SMOKING CONCERNS
Giving up smoking is not easy but there
is lots of help available in Glasgow if you
really want to stop.
STOP SMOKING GROUPS
Groups run in local areas in the city:
they are relaxed, informal, free & one of
the best ways to quit. These groups are
generally run in English.
ONE TO ONE SUPPORT
Smoking Concerns also offer one to one
support from a stop smoking advisor in your
local area.
STARTING FRESH PHARMACY
Over 200 pharmacies (chemists) in Glasgow
can help you stop with 1 to 1 support.
Look for the ‘Starting Fresh’ window sticker
and drop in for help to quit. Some of these
pharmacies have staff who can offer a direct
service in a number of languages.

GLASGOW COUNCIL ON ALCOHOL (GCA)

GCA helps people who are
experiencing problems related to
their own or someone else’s drinking.
The Alcohol Counselling Centre provides
individual, confidential counselling for
people with alcohol problems and their
partners/families. In addition there are
two counsellors for young people.
Counselling aims to help you identify and
deal with the problems you feel you have.
It consists of a series of private meetings
between you and your counsellor to talk
through your problems.
Counselling is offered from a City Centre
office or from offices in Drumchapel, Yoker,
East End, East Dunbartonshire and
Rutherglen/Cambuslang.

GLASGOW DRUG CRISIS CENTRE
The centre is open 24 hours a day and
offers advice information, assessment
and support to
people with a drug
related problem.
The centre also has a 24-hour needle
exchange and a 12 bed emergency short
stay facility for people who are not coping
in the community.
The centre does not offer long term
counselling or advocacy work.
