CELEBRATING YEARS OF HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE 1976 The Prince of Wales founded The Prince’s Trust with his severance pay from the Navy of £7,400. The Trust ran 21 pilot projects around the country. Grants were given to 19-year-old Pauline O’Halloran to run a youth centre for Haggerston Housing Estate, East London, and for two ex-offenders to run a fi shing club. Swimming baths in Cornwall were hired with funds from the Trust to train young lifeguards and for a self-help bicycle repair scheme. BELOW Status Quo, stars of the 1982 Rock Gala, continued to support the Trust through the 1990s. “ The fastest increases in self-employment in our history are, in no small measure, due to the inspiration of The Prince’s Trust.” Gordon Brown, 2004 1983 The Business Programme is launched to help 18-30-year-olds start their own businesses by offering low-interest loans and grants to those who have no other means of raising the capital. 1986 Fledgling company Attik given a grant of £1,000. It’s now a multi-million pound international design agency. 1990 Volunteer Programme launched – which became the Team Programme in 2003. This 12-week course gives young people self-confi dence and motivation. 1990 Study support centres start, adopted by the Government seven years later. Xl clubs for schools follow in 1998. THE TRUST EMPLOYS MORE THAN 700 PEOPLE AND ENJOYS THE SUPPORT OF OVER 7,000 VOLUNTEERS. SINCE THE LAUNCH OF THE TEAM PROGRAMME MORE THAN 90,000 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE JOINED THE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHEME. SINCE 1983 THE PRINCE’S TRUST HAS HELPED OVER 66,000 YOUNG PEOPLE SET UP IN BUSINESS.
